i was beginning to reconsider making my game a 2d 3d hybrid. now im sold
do you think making a 2D game is harder?
I need help 😢but am tryna do0 it for a mobile game-,^!
I'm so grateful for your insight and generosity. I have done a lot of groundwork planning the game, writing story, characters, rough maps and spreadsheets for the world and systems involved, but I'm a total amateur at developing and being solo and doing this in my free time with very little capital makes it a little daunting, there's so much to learn. I wanted to start learning Unreal to make a 2D/3D hybrid game certainly over Unity, and wanted to use an engine that has a lot of support and community without having to spend a lot of time learning so much from the ground up, and I was frustrated by Unreal's recent jettisoning of support for these types of games. I don't know if I'll use Unreal or something else, but this gives me a lot of food for thought.
This is fantastic for unreal 2D devs. Good job! 🤙🏻
Dude, you’re paid lessons in almost all your lessons has helped me so much I can’t thank you enough
Once things start rolling with the studio, they’ll be sure to do a bunch of shout outs
Thanks for helping me to love working in unreal
Awesome, glad to hear you're happy with the courses :D
Thank you!
Hey man, i just wanna say that keep it up. I can see you becoming the defacto 2D unreal guy on RUclips.
Thank you :)
Yes! I’ve been waiting for this. Thankyou it’s awesome. Great for people who want to get started in unreal but are a bit scared of the complexity at the start
I'm very grateful with your content. Already finished your udemy course and not only is a great course for 2d game developing, but also a great way to learn Blueprints and kickstart my game developer journey.
Thank you so much :D
I designed it to also help with blueprints in general, so I'm glad it's working as intended!
Thank you for your work in this area. I spent a few days playing around in 2D a while back and the available tutorials and documentation were really sparse … looks like you have really fixed that problem ! Looking forward to checking out your work. Cheers !
Thank you :)
Yeah a few years back things were really rough.... but now it looks like other tutorial creators are also jumping in on this and I think we're gonna see much more of this stuff.
This is awesome dude! Love your videos! Your course had been great and I'm gonna drop some love as a patron 😊
Thank you :D
This is GOLD! Thank you for sharing this!
I absolutely love your videos! Please make a tutorial on how to do melee beat em up combat like your devlogs with the skeleton enemies.
love from Sweden 🇸🇪
oh mate thank you so much. you are far too kind. this is literally inspiring. i cant think of enough words to thank you.
Thank you for watching :D
This is awesome. Planning to make the switch to unreal engine soon. I'm still in the process of wrapping things up in unity
Thank you. You have given me inspiration on how I was going to design my game I want to work on. I was torn between 2D or 3D. Seeing this has given me the inspiration to combine the two. I think it could work if done right. Again thank you and I will watch the rest of the video to learn from it.
Awesome :D
Yeah mixing both together is a path many people don't even consider, but I think it works so well.
@@CobraCode Oh def you don't see it very often but I certainly think it is a cool design choice. Adds a neat mix of the two styles.
This is so freakin cool!!!! Exactly what I was looking for! I'm so excited. Thank you!
It's really great! I would like to ask when the new course will be released! I really love your course so much!🎉
Hey thank you!
I'm actually struggling a bit with the beat 'em up course which I was working on since it turns out to be bigger in scope than I thought and I still can't find/draw the assets I need.
I might slip in another course that's easier produce before that just to not make people wait for too long.
@@CobraCode You are really awesome! Looking forward to your new course! Thank you🥰
Dude this stuff is great!
Thank you :D
Awesome, many thanks! You are helping newbies to achieve their dreams of becoming game developers, little by little 😁
Now, I wish I could fetch any ideas about how to make the movement tile-based like the old RPG games 🤔
Awesome :)
Haven't really tried that yet, but I believe at that point you probably won't even use the character movement component and just make a custom system. Then it involves the node 'Snap to Grid' in some way.
Would love to see something with enemies and could you recommend which tutorial to watch to integrate my own 2d character assets? Definitely willing to pay, just don't want to get lost along the way.
Hey, I have a udemy course that covers all of that!
tinyurl.com/Ultimate2D
@@CobraCodewould this be relevant to the templates shown in this video? Interested in utilising the top down 2D/3D hybrid template, again happy to pay but as Mekka said I worry about getting lost importing my own 2D assets and animations.
The course covers importing assets and creating enemies, however it doesn't focus on Top Down.

@@CobraCode thanks for your reply. That’s exactly what I needed, you do great work!
Just Bought your course! I want to make a 2d/3d hybrid!
Thank you so much :)
i signed in just to give you a like
we love you bro
Thank you so much :D
Please make a video about how to fish in 2d on unreal engine. Gonna be trying to do 2d fishing in unreal engine myself so I hope I can figure it out well. Good luck on your future work
I actually love fishing in games and have plans to cover that for sure!
I want to do it justice though and need to do a lot of research first. It probably won't happen this or next year... but it will eventually!
On 1:39 you mentioned that you have a blueprint direction that you haven't shared so far. This means it is not available not even in your course? Or it will be covered in the same section as for this game?
Hey.
Yeah I decided against including it in the course because it's actually quite convoluted and would have killed the nice flow of the course and probably left people confused.
So far the template is the only place where I have that, but the nodes are commented, so people should be able to figure out how it works by looking at them.
@@CobraCodeas much as it would disturb the flow i am surprised you never added it in the bonus section of the course it's actually something i would like to have learned about as i myself an using 4-8dir sprites
i also have to figure out how to free the camera and have the sprite rotate in response (would have loved this as a bonus as well)
Awesome dude! :D
how can i make a map like 1:31
just made my first game using custom flipbooks thanks to this
the third one is what i wanted this was so helpful now i can make a 2d rpg game
Hey Cobra! I just have a question if you don’t mind helping me. How do you make non-pixelated 2d games in unreal similar to the game “Rounds”?
Bro this is amazing. Thank you so much. Can you do a tutorial about how to do skeletal animation on PaperZD? I'm trying to make a top-down rpg
Thanks!
AFAIK there are no proper free tools to use skeletal animation with Unreal.
I know spline has a plugin you can use with PaperZD, but it's paid and most people won't be able to follow along.
how create hack-slash combat system with paper-ZD?
Im not even doing 2D anytime soon and this makes me happy
Could you explain how multiplayer works for 2D games in Unreal? =)
A video about that is on my TODO list, but sadly it's not high priority right now.
Nothing really changes though except for updating the animation state of the sprite.
Everything else works the same as it does in 3D.
Do these templates have any pixel grid snapping options?
Hey, the templates themselves don't have pixel snapping since it's not something you necessarily want to use on every project.
I already finished filming the episode about pixel snapping though and for patrons it will be nicely packaged up as a plugin you can easily apply to any project.
Gonna release some time next month.
You are the G, thanks ✌
I was wondering if you could include a template for the beat em up game you recently made. Would it be on your patreon?
Hey.
I actually plan to rather create a full course on how to make a beat em up like that.
Hey, any update on when the 2d beat em up tutorial might be coming?
Are these templates more complete than the one we make in the udemy course?
These templates are meant as starting points for projects, so they shouldn't be to bloated or opinionated.
The games we make in the course are more feature rich.
However the 2D/3D hybrid side scroller template has a more robust implementation for changing the movement direction than the udemy course project.
Could you make a tutorial on how to make a character creator for 2d games? so many 3d ones but zero 2d ones. like stardew vallys! :D youd be a hero
Thanks for the suggestion :D
This is on my TODO list, but due to how niche it is it doesn't have high priority right now.
@@CobraCode Could I commission one? XD
nice 👍
thank you for this
sa-ti dea Dumnezeu sanatate Cobra Code
Multumesc!
La fel sa-ti dea Dumnezeu sanatate 😀
Wow it looks great !
dose it contains also enemy logic ?
Hey.
No enemy logic in these because I didn't want to bloat them too much.
They should be simple enough to be a starting point without forcing you to delete too much stuff.
Nice 😁
Can i find the enemy logic In your patron ?
@@vr-gaming156
The only thing with enemy logic so far is my Udemy course. It actually has 4 patterns of enemy logic!
You can find it in the video description in case you're interested.
Thanks for these!
Very, very nice template!
Already imported a bunch of old sprites and tiles I made years ago and they look great.
One question though: The main character sprite is a bit larger than all the 16x16 tiles I use, so when standing close to the wall, part of the sprite ends up behind the tile. Is there any way to have the playable character always be infront everything else?
If you're making a 2D only game you can use a translucent material and set the sort order.
However for 2D/3D hybrids I haven't found a way so far which forces a certain sort order.
If you use materials though there must be a way since Street Fighter 5 was made with UE4 and they had a sorting system even for 3D meshes, but sadly I'm not that great with materials yet.
It's a pure 2D only. And your suggestion worked. Now the sprite is in front of the tiles. Thanks a bunch!
Getting a few weird lines the appears as the camera is moving. I noticed that your tiles have spaces between them, while mine are on 16x16 tiles spread over a 64x64 sheet with no space between each tile. Might there be a reason why you spaced out your tileset? @@CobraCode
EDIT: I solved this. For anyone else getting the same issue with the grid glitching sometimes, right-click the tileset and choose "Condition Tile Sheet Texture" and it'll fix the issue.
please give me a video on how to do a topdown jump
Why don't put it onto the Marketplace? Gonna buy 1 for supporting
Hey, thanks for the suggestion.
I was thinking about that, but the problem with the marketplace is that you cannot really offer something as a template.
They'll only be able to create a new project from it and then I'd have to make a roundabout explanation of how they can convert that to a template.
Also I think for marketplace assets the expected quality and scope is a lot higher than this template.
I'm easing my way into this and might put some stuff up on there later once I'm more comfortable with making templates and samples.
@@CobraCode Looks like you need to figure it out. But trust me, Marketplace has lots of crap contents, this 2d template is a good one.
Please let me know the order of the 3 lectures I should watch in Udemy. And do the 3 lectures overlap a lot?
Hey!
There is some overlap since I always need to cover the basics, but the things you'll learn in the later sections will greatly differ.
I recommend starting with the Ultimate 2D Course:
tinyurl.com/Ultimate2D
Then move on to the Top Down Course:
tinyurl.com/Unreal2DTopDown
And then do the platformer course in case this genre is interesting to you:
tinyurl.com/2DActionPlatformer
Loading the free 2D template gives me this error pop-up:
'Failed to load map!
.../2DSideScroller/Maps/MAP_SideScroller.umap is a UE map [File:v522|1,009], from an engine release newer than this [Cur:v522|1,004].'?
Which Unreal Engine version are you on?
@@archivalhorror
Got it!
Sorry if that wasn't clear but you have to use 5.1 or higher since this template uses the enhanced input system which was introduced with 5.1
Cobra Code thank you
but can I rotate with the last template? like the camera
dragged those files i think correct location and still not showing up
Great video
Amazing job. For the 2nd template, does the attack animation have hitbox properties? I would love to make an action 2D Hybrid game with all the characters being sprites and environments as 3D. Also, have you made any tutorials similar to my description of the game I'm trying to make?
Edit: Never mind I found your unreal course and it's exactly what I need so I got that. You are a hero!
Thank you :D
Yeah the Unreal Course has exactly what you need!
The template only shows how to play an animation with an anim override, but there's no actual hitbox.
I'm guessing the patreon only is optimized for things like HD2D in the style of Octopath?
I'm interested in that, so basically the template allows you to drag in pixelated characters and it helps with the movement bit?
Both templates use HD2D, yes.
One is octopath traveler style and the other one is just a side scroller which could be used for a beat em up, platformer or metroidvania.
It sets up all the project settings, the character and movement.
@@CobraCode which one of the templates is the closest to Octopath would you say?
The top down one for sure@@Lucario6804
not all heroes wear capes
thank you brother if i make money with my game i will not forget you
I did 8 directional movement from scratch(no plug in) a while back. This is slightly easier.
Thank you sir!
you're a god
Why is there no tutorial on pixel textured terrain?
An easy trick is to just set the max texture size to something like 128 or 256 and the filter to 'nearest' on whatever ground texture you're using.
Works best for handpainted textures.
But yeah best result is by hand pixeling them and it takes a lot of skill.
@@CobraCode I'm currently using the mixed terrain in 3d games, and I tried the simple approach you recommended, but it doesn't seem to work that well. I've tried mixing with pixelated textures before, and the blending border transitions are not as obvious, not Octopath Traveler.
Dude....people would pay for this....guarantee it. I would. Do you have a patreon or donation link setup?
Hey, thank you!
You can find the patreon link in the description.
2 advanced templates are available through the patreon, while the base template is free and open source.
@@CobraCode are these taught in your udemy course?
@@StewietheGameDev The one with the pirate is similar to what is taught in the Ultimate 2D course, yes.
Top down isn't in any of the current courses, but I'm actually finishing up a new course specifically for 2D Top Down now.
Should be out in 1~2 months.
Thank you!
me watching the first ten seconds scared that i'm about to be sold something:
Thaaanks!!
Thanks a lot.
awesome thankyou
thank you
These videos are always the same, a million dude made the same tutorial about 2d in Unreal but none made advanced tutorials on Boss and enemy creation.
How about advanced Enemy tutorial in 2D that would be way better than just simple templates that has beeen done to death.
I think I know every single person that ever made a video about UE 2D and it's definitely not a million dudes 😄
Thanks for the feedback though and I know what you mean. The people that are already in the scene want to see more advanced tutorials, but at the same time I also need to work on getting more people to know that Unreal Engine 2D even exists and also make it easier for them to get started and I think this template will hopefully do a good job at helping with that.
@@CobraCode First of all sorry if I offended in some way, A million dude is just a figure of speech.
Second I appreciate your work I truly do otherwise I wouldn't be here and I'm glad you took it as a feedback, it show you're a fantastic dude.
Anyways we would really apprecitae advanced stuff in UE as I mentioned above.
@@nightggg
No problem and thanks for the follow up :)
Thank you :D
I'll try to strike a nice balance between advanced stuff and more basic things.
Gonna have a Pixel Perfect rendering video and an advanced movement technique video soon, so that might be interesting for you as well.
Thank you so much
please make template with enemies, attack and death scripting!!
Hey, I believe templates should be rather simple because they should only be a starting point.
But I like what you're saying and I am thinking of making something more along the lines of a 'game kit' which has all of those things at some point in time.
@@CobraCode that would be great🙌just some enemy character bases that you can switch the sprites on. I'm not so good at coding but I can make my own sprites, tiles and stuff
Nice
you good
But what if youre poor?
Use the free template as a starting point and build the others yourself.
All the patreon templates give you is a shortcut for convenience and that's it.
@@CobraCode Oh! Thats a relief..
Thanks for doing all this for us man
Very generous
Duuuuuuuuuude!!!!
