This 1969 Camaro features all the right numbers… and letters! How about COPO, 9561, 9737, 427… and RS on top! It’s a COPO Camaro with a 427, the Sports Car conversion package, and it features the Rally Sport styling package as well. It’s one of about 58 built this way, and it has a lineage to the famous Berger Chevrolet dealer as well. A very cool Camaro from The Brothers Collection.
With over 240,000 1969 Camaros built, it’s easy to become a bit desensitized to the standouts. The good thing is that there is plenty of documentation and research material to reference when something special pops up. And this is a special Camaro indeed.
The story begins with the dealer name affixed to the back of our Fathom Green Camaro. Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids, MI, dates all the way back to the 1920s and is still thriving today. In the late 1960s, the Berger team did quite well selling high performance parts and cars like this 1969 Camaro.
The biggest engine available in your typical over-the-counter ‘69 Camaro was the 396, but the Berger crew knew some tricks when it came to getting their hands on hotter versions of Chevrolet’s hottest cars. You may have heard of the Central Office Production Order system, or it’s COPO acronym before… this process allowed for cars to be ordered in special colors for fleets or municipal usage, for example. But it also allowed for the powerful 427 Corvette engine to be installed under the hood of Camaros where it wasn’t officially offered. Yenko Chevrolet was famous for this, but a few other dealers, like Berger, Nickey, Jack Douglas, and Baldwin Chevrolet also knew how to do massive, sideways burnouts through the COPO loophole.
COPO code 9561 bought you the L-72 427 for the kind-of affordable upcharge of just $489.75. It wore a Holley 780 cfm carb, aluminum intake manifold, rectangular port cylinder heads and swung a forged steel crank and pistons. The 11:1 compression 427 was good for a solid 425 hp and 460 lb. ft. of tq. This one is clamped to a Turbo 400 automatic, like most of the Berger COPOS were, with the others turning Muncie 4-speed manuals. The rumble is somewhat hushed thanks to the performance chambered exhaust system.
In addition to the powerful mill, this one was also built to cut the rug with the C.O.P.O. Option #9737 known as the "Sportscar Conversion Package”. 9737 added 15 x 7” rally wheels with white lettered Goodyear tires, G32 Heavy Duty Springs, power front disc brakes, a 12-bolt Positraction rear differential cogged with 4.10 gears, and oversized 1" Heavy Duty Stabilizer Bars. These “double COPO” cars are about the best of all worlds when it comes to powertrain and suspension options for a factory built 1969 Camaro. The only goodies left on the dealership table would be the L89 aluminum heads or the Zl1 all aluminum 427, but ZL1s are a whole different deal.
COPO Camaros are hard to find, but even more so when they are fitted with the Rally Sport appearance package. Rally Sports hide the headlights behind movable doors and have a special grille up front. This one has a body-colored flexible front bumper and the ZL-2 Cowl Induction hood for a really slick appearance. RS cars also move the reverse lights below the bumper and have specific tail lights. The rear spoiler adds to the sporty look, and the wheel opening trim glistens in the sea of green. Bright “gills” dress up the quarter panels, and thin pinstripes highlight the body lines. The green vinyl top with polished “halo” trim classes up the roof.
The driver enjoys a deep green cockpit with bucket seats, center console, and a basket handle shifter. Many times, Rally Sport Camaros are loaded with options, but being a COPO, this one remains pretty minimal, without A/C or other power accessories. It’s wearing a very nice restoration, and is one of only 58 or so COPOS built with the RS package.

In 1970, as a high school kid I worked at Nickey Chevrolet (backwards K) in Chicago doing oil changes and other shop duties. Nickey had a very large, stand alone performance department with engine build room, parts dept, installation room. They had one old guy building both big and small blocks. He was a mean old guy but at any given time he had probably half dozen or more engines on stands in various stages of build. You see, at Nickey you could order Camaro, Nova, Corvette, Chevelle without any drivetrain. The train line runs right behind Nickey and they would have forklift take the brand new cars off the rail car and drop right there at the dealership. You could order the engine/trans/rearend combo pretty much how ever you wanted.
But to make a long story just a bit longer. So as a result of my dad's kid (me) working at Nickey Chevrolet he bought the dealership owner's demo car which was a 1970 SS 454 LS6 TH400/3:55 posi axle Monte Carlo. Had 3500 miles on it. And as a high school kid with a brand new drivers license I did some serious street racing in the evening on the streets of Oak Park, Forest Park, River Forest, Lombard, Berwyn, Downers Grove. All over. Damn, at the time, that car was a beast. Wish I had that car today. Those were the "good 'ole" days. Not like it is now at all.

Back in 1979, I owned (so I was told), a 1968 Nova SS, by Berger Chevrolet. 396 w/ M22, 3.73 gear. I was 17/18 yrs. old Man was it a beast. If I knew then, What I know now. LOL

If only I had of known these muscle cars would have been so valuable I would have certainly held on to my 1969 SS Camaro with 396 4speed dressed in garnet red w black vinyl top and a white interior...instead of training it in on a 1973 ford ltd...lol ps...i got 1200 dollars trade in for the car BUMMER

My Dad in 1966 ordered a Carryall. When he did he got it with the indust 327 and more. He had a contract with the dealer. In the end the dealer tried to break it because it cost them more for it then what he had paid them. In the end it went on to have over a million miles on the motor. Yes at 500000 he replaced rings and exhaust valves but bearings cam pistons and all where put back into it. We still have it but it has been parked for 15 years. It still sits with the original engine and all in it

Yes Kevin, I can dig it! That is an incredible car,.The looks are very smooth. The somewhat plain look without a ton of flashy decals is the look that I would have chosen as well. With the vinyl roof and subtle green it is a blast from the past. When you hear that car idle however, you know it is something special. Keep up the good work!

I knew a Guy in Kalamaozo who had a Canary Yellow RS COPO Camaro from Berger .. he sold it to antoher guy who recently sold the rolling chasis to a guy in TX

That 425 hp rating has to be a joke. Maybe it made that at 5000 rpm. THE Actual high hp Rating is closer to 500 hps.

Early 69 production car, narrower rear spoiler left over from 68 production. My 69 Z was a September production and had the same narrower spoiler over the 1/4 panels.

Basket handle shifter I called it horse shoe shifter for years no one ever corrected me until today.
Great video, and gorgeous car. Not fond of the pinstripes or the vinyl roof, but it still looks good. What I don't understand is why Chevy did body-color front bumpers and chrome rear bumpers; that still looks a bit odd to me.
That's an Endura front bumper. Most 1st gens have chrome bumpers front and back. Most pro-touring or resto mods customs get done with body color bumpers front and back.
GTO did the same, Endura in the front only. Not sure why.

There is one identical to this one around the Middletown, Ohio area.
Its a 4spd with dog dishes on it. All original with patina & dings.
Wonderful car... that L72 427 could be modified to over 600 H.P. for use in the street ..and on the strip turn times in the upper 11 secondi range....just what every 20 year young man needed......
Was that surcharge of $489 for the 427 on top of the cost of the 375 hp 396, or that over the cost of the base V8?
Timeless body style, no matter what package. They say the T400 was faster in the 1/4, but 4 speed was more fun too drive..

never saw a rs or ss copo before, must be a pretty rare bird.pretty funny having to brake rev a horsepower monster for a burn-out, don't think line locks were a copo option huh? lol! love those smoke shows and I don't know why. You will never see a SS COPO car as the COPO superseded the Super Sport , and is why they don't have the hockey stick stripes on the front fenders and doors .

I noticed on this car that the rear spoiler is a narrow 67 -68 version did the dealer install it or was it a factory miscue?
Early in the production run(late 1968 through part of 1969) if you ordered a spoiler, leftover 68 spoilers were installed on 69 camaros. The wider 69 spoiler was designed and installed later in the production run. This is an early production 1969 Camaro that was restored properly, with the spoiler it came with.

1969 Camaro's were one of my favorite cars from that era. Loved the Z28 in that color. Love those wheels and the RS grill & headlight covers. 427 is my kind of engine as i found out with my 67 Vette. Just have a hard time accepting an auto trans as part of the package. Gimmie a 4 speed and i'll live with the vinyl top and pin stripes.
I know this video is old, but is that a 68 spoiler on it? it looks too narrow compared to other 69 camaro spoilers, was that normal for this car?
Yes it's normal , early production '69s used leftover '67/'68 spoilers until they had tooled up and started making the wider ones .

Why brake stand when you got over 400 hp
Ronald, those are done primarily to keep the car in the camera frame for video purposes. Of course, the car will burn the tires all day long on its own. Thanks for the comment!
smoking down the meats with about 1/3 throttle. I have very bad hips and lower back problems , so yes , I would check the TH400 box.
You mentioned L89 heads. Wasn't that only a 396 option for Camaro and Chevelle? Never saw a L89 427 in a Camaro or Chevelle is why I ask. I know it was available for the Corvette 67-69.
It has a 1968 rear spoiler, they were two inches narrower than the 1969 due to the wider body of the 1969. I have heard of this happening on some dealer installed cases.
The early '69 Camaros had the narrow spoiler , later in the year they changed over to the wider version .
@@bobbrinkerhoff3592 I think GM probably just used what they had on hand early in the production year but more likely it was dealer installed. I personally don’t like the 68 width on the 69, to me it just looks funny.

All the Chevy exhaust systems in 1969 were pretty crappy that's why headers made such a huge difference. Even the Corvette systems were terrible in 69 as they all had 2-inch pipes! Yes 2-inch pipes on everything, even big blocks and even the L88.

Never cared for Camaro's, however, this one demands respect even w/ the automatic trans. shame it's not a 4-speed.
That's a special high-upshift model Turbo 400 and you could leave it in drive and it would shift nice and hard at exactly 6500 rpm, it is an awesome automatic trans.
What's with the over spray on the exhaust manifolds ?
When they painted the engines after they were built the exhaust manifolds were on the engine so there you go. Guess they figured most of the paint would burn off or you couldn't hardly see it anyway.
