He taught them a lot more, based on what I've seen in Helio's master text, which contains lots of standing throws. Also an early video shows them doing lot's of throws as well. The Jiu-Jitsu of the Gracies was about street fighting and, challenge matches. Some of which may have been staged. That apparently changed in 1967 when younger members of the family wanted it to become a sport. The Newaza focus came then.
So the Gracies practiced mainly Judo until 1967 when they focussed on Ne Waza? You can see in many Gracie challenge videos Judo throws, pins and submissions which look very different to BJJ tournament techniques
You are so right Im training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & Judo and my Sensei for Judo says he aint changing anything we are practicing everything. Jigaro Kano modified Jiu jitsu for a reason now they taking away something instead of giving more.
10:30 too bad it is not allowed in todays Judo :( I instinctively want to apply this throw but then remind myself it is illegal, got stuck in the movement and land on the mat, like "seriously?"
Not really, from what I've read, they used what Maeda had taught them, along with whatever else they had learned for street brawling ,challenge matches and, self-defense. Judo is more than techniques. It's moral and, character development, physical fitness, an entire philosophy, along with sport and, self-defense. Judo is for making better people. The Gracies were only doing the physical part and, whatever philosophy they've developed came during the last 40 years.
Judo is very applicable today. Most 'attackers' are wearing clothes. So where as its not used in MMA, on the street, it can be very dangerous.
finally some real judo.. these new rules are killing this beautifull martial art.
T_T
Judo has some of the best groundwork in the world, bar none. Its just not consistent across the board since allot of judo folks neglect it.

This is the best video
it's actually used in mma more often than you think.

Judô, para mim, é o melhor. Sem respeitar as outras artes....

So, in a sense, they were doing a lot of Judo tachi-waza (standing techniques), but didn't follow the "way", only the technique.

This is judo, it is technique!

Sensei mehdi told me he beat all the jiujitsu guys! I believe him after what he did to me!
Newaza is what the Maeda taught the Gracies. I doubt he taught them shit.

@moccentije So true
That kata guruma by the french judoka was a dangerous technique and should not be practiced!
