I saw Alocasia and clicked SO FAST!! I’ve fallen down the Alocasia rabbit hole the last month and I’ve added 9+ different varieties…
My KopperT Canada beneficial mites just arrived today so I can’t wait to add them to my Alocasia’s and the rest of my collection!
Your story of them and my story, are both shared on their Instagram story! I’m so excited to get them all added to my plants :)

Alocasia dragon scale is just breathtaking. I used to only have the silver one but finally I purchased the regular green and the leaves are just unreal. It's like cartoon or something, just not real 🙃🙃 and yes, seeing yours truly motivates me to give my newly arrived dragon scale the best care it needs so that it can grow like yours too!

Love your collection. Alocasia are my favorite. I grow all of my alocasia with sphag moss in no drainage vessels. I just pop in some osmocote every 3 months and water with superthrive regularly. I keep a little layer of water at the bottom of the vase so they never dry out, and they seem to be super happy like that longterm plus I love seeing the roots.

Hi Fern. I grow my variegated frydek in a self watering pot in pon. I tried various mediums and for me the best it's done in is definitely pon. I also hold the leaves up with bamboo sticks. I have found that doing this makes the leaves last longer since they are so big and heavy at this point. Love this video! I just added a few more alocasia to my wishlist because of it❤

I bought an alocasia poly from the depot. It was in a self watering pot and it grew, but died back to a stump. I repotted her and found a cloth plug suffocating to roots! I also found 5 corms inside! So now she’s repotted and has 2 beautiful leaves! I can’t wait to see it grow, and this video came right at the right time. Your collection is stunning! 😍😍

Your Dragon scale is gorgeous! 😍 Mine is the same color as yours and was also sold to me as regular Dragon Scale. I think the color has to do with the kind of light it receives.
I have 2 Variegated Frydeks - one in chunky mix and one in pon. They are both in high humidity + good light. They are both pretty happy but the one in pon is definitely growing faster ☺️

    • @SirMopy

if the light is too bright, you’ll get more green. it’s a silver dragon and not the regular green one.

I have my variegated frydek in pon and it’s been really liking it. It transferred super easily and has pushed out 2 leaves since transfer. For most of my Alocasia I usually put them in pon anyways since it makes it very low maintenance and I don’t have to worry about watering them as often. Also I have my black velvet in pon as well and it makes the world of difference for growing them.

  • @rebeccahenderson7761
    @rebeccahenderson7761 4 месяца назад +1

Wow, that's the very 1st Alocasia Dragon Scale I have ever liked. That is gorgeous with very deep colouring. Oh I do potting mix with self watering all the time, it's great!! I also do clear pots with chunky perlite and potting mix directly on top, and a syringe that reaches from the bottom to the top of the soil, and I water through the syringe - works like a charm. Wow, I hadn't liked the Jaclyn until seeing yours!! That green frydek! 💚

  • @ThatGirlShelbyy
    @ThatGirlShelbyy 10 месяцев назад +2

I’m sure your frydek will come back!!
My variegated Frydeks (I bought 3 during the summer) are in a couple different substrates and living in normal room conditions by my south facing balcony window.
The small one was sent to me in a pon-type mixture so I left it in that mix and it’s thriving, and my 2 larger ones from a different shop are in a super chunky mix and also doing really well so far!
They’re putting out new leaves, and taking forever to drop an old leaf, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it keeps up!
I’m honestly not sure how they’ve been thriving so well, probably because of how humid it’s been this summer. The humidity has been coming down in the last week though, so I have a feeling I’m about to see some declines in my collection as we move into fall

I had someone gift me a pink dragon to keep alive after me aging the same thing. This has been a simple alocasia that gets a leaf and loses a leaf. Right now it has two beautiful leaves after losing the newest one. I’m hoping to be in the three leaf club. But I tried again. Pick something simple cheap and try again.

Really love when you do each type of varieties of plants. The Hoya and Cacti are my top favourites. Alocasia’s i find they do great in pon in glass no drainage or lecca at the bottom and soil on top in non drainage works too. Since they like to be kept moist i find these substrates works best. Compared to just soil if stick with just soil make it more compact not too airy otherwise drys out too fast.

You should have a look at the Azlanii (has almost iridescent red veins), the Nebula (has almost blackish-green thick leathery leaves), the Lauterbachiana (also known as Purple sword), Cucculata (heart shaped leaves), Pink Dragon (green Leaves on pink stems), Tiny Dancer (Small droplet shaped leaves), Wentii (Big Green Leaves w. purple backs), Portodora (big ruffled leaves), Zarian (arrowshaped green leaves w. bright white veins) and Seudo Sanderiana (ruffled elongated leaves w. Purple backs) 🤗🪴

I figured out my silver dragon and dragon scale! I grow them in a pot that is like 80% perlite and cactus soil. Mine like super drainage. Now I just check to water about once a week. Of course, I look at them at least once per hour to admire their beauty, though😂 I've had both for over a year and they've given me so many corms and new plants!

so pretty i love all of your alocasia!! i'm a big fan of the genus, but my planty coworkers at the nursey i used to work for a few years ago kept steering my noob self away from the begonias + alocasia i loved, saying they "weren't good for beginners". so i only got into them maybe 6 months ago, but my Zebrina, Sarian + Red Secret are THRIVING with huge leaves/ sizing up quickly/ no pest problems, so i think it's time for me to get some more, thanks for some new wishlist plants ;)

  • @kishenia

My Frydek var has been going wild! I think the trick to her has always been keeping the sphagnum moss topper damp, it just seems to help my entire Alocasia collection in my Milsbo Tall thrive. I make my own soil. One of my fave Alocasia's currently is the Brancifolia. When the Brancifolia starts cycling leaves it gets the same patterning as the Jacklyn but on a smooth surface. I rarely enjoy an Alocasia cycling it's older leaves out but it's mesmerizing watching the Brancifolia and Jacklyn leaves die when the patterning becomes so apparent.

I love this video already! I am only up to Dragon Scale, I just wanted to comment to say that my one is very similar in coloration to yours, and I believe that it's a light thing. When I have mine right under a grow light for a long time it gets much greener but it gets the darker, blue/grey look in lower light. I love it! All that to say I don't think it's a hybrid, just a light thing, and that maybe some are more prone to the grey colouring than others. But I definitely love that look

That noID is gorgeous! Glad you might’ve found out what it is. Reminds me a bit of a chantrieri, which is 10/10 can recommend.
Your CUPREA. Oh my GOSH! Gorgeous, beautiful, stunning, she is the moment. Mine does the same thing, spreads out (and she really likes to try and crawl 🤔 which seems like an instinctual thing for it)
Thank you for this collection, alocasia are my faves! Your collection is amazing, and you are a fantastic planty parent and a planty Queen :)
A fun collection might be oldest to youngest-well, maybe not the whooooole collection, but some of your oldest plants?

Fern, I have an acrylic stake in the pot with most of my Alocasia, but my Cuprea is insane without it! She's always tied up to keep her controlled.

LOVE alocasia!! Fern, you neeeed an Azlanii! Seriously, they're so unique and stunning. And more ravishing in RL than in pictures.
My dragon scale is the same color as yours, btw.

I love my azlanii, but she’s def my most difficult alocasia. Do you have tips? I feel like she doesn’t want to size up. I know some alocasia stay smaller and more compact, and I think that might be the case. Tips?

azlanii will be smaller. always. like the black velvet. they don’t get large.

One thing I noticed all your alocasias have in common is how leggy they are. If you want some bushier/more compact growth, try potting in lechuza pon! They will def start keeping more leaves. Also, alocasias are extremely hungry, so make sure you fertilize often. Another benefit of pon is how nutrient rich it is, and alocasias love it :)

I bought 2var. frydeks at the same time, one went in pon right away and the other in stayed in soil and were both in my milsbo and the one in pon immediately sized up and have had to pot up already. The one I left in soil was dropping leaves. I repotted it in pon and I need to size it up already.

I grow my v frydek in pon and it loves it. It had 4 beautiful leaves. It has gone a bit dormant at the moment as my apartment was close to 80 in the summer and is now 65-67 but the corm and roots are still great so I'm not too concerned.

Your Alocasia collection is gorgeous! The olani is so beautiful! I've killed quite a few, and currently only the zebrina reticulata is happy in my conditions. Maybe it's time to give them another try... 🤔

My variegated Frydek loves lechuza pon, It really has jst taken off! Im not the best when it comes to keeping up with watering, so being able to essentially set it and forget kinda is a added bonus. Plus having it in a organic medium or soilless one cuts down on it being a pest magnet.

My black velvet does that twisted lean too. The corms that I got from her have all leafed up and seem to be staying upright.....for now. My dragon scale is doing well this year too since I put him in pon. I live in the UK and can only wish that mine will get to look like yours

I have the Zebrina Reticulata, and it pretty much stays in the 2-3 leaf club. It looks like ours are about the same age too, I got mine as a plug in July ‘23. I kept hearing about spider mite issues and I literally saw my first spider mites last week (red ones). I rinsed the plant leaves and stems 2x per day for 3 days and I haven’t seen anything since. I do check it daily for more signs of them. I know that a couple of days treatment really isn’t enough but I do keep looking. I also came across a video from Liqui-dirt and Aloha plant life for a natural spider mite control. It’s Bronners Castile soap (tea tree and peppermint), 70% rubbing alcohol, and hydrogen peroxide. Mix it up, put in pump sprayer and spray your plants. I ordered all the things I need and now I’m going to spray my plants. From what I understand, the tea tree, alcohol and peroxide kill soft bodied bugs on contact and the peppermint helps repel the bugs from returning. 🤷🏻‍♀ I’ll see if it works.

I’m editing to say it’s Dr Woods Castile soap, not Bronners.

I'm eying the alocasia melo and azlanii. I grow mine in a well draining soil in a self watering pot. Mine are crazy thirsty and hungry plants. The ones i have are micholitziana, polly, cuprea and a variegated one.

The stingray, tiny dancer and wentii do best for me. Our Tasmanian winter reduced the rest to a garden of dormant corms in perlite. My favourite has to be Azlanii.

hi Fern! Love your videos from Italy. I was wandering if you can say more watering information while you are talking about a specific plant. If you use to water a plant when she is completely dry or not. I know it depends on the evironment but I think that having an idea would be helpful! thanks a lot

Round 2 for me trying with alocasia again LOL. I bought a cupria and dragon scale again. I watched your older video and you said you dont do anything extra with humidity. I will try less humidity this time around.

I used a chunky mix for my frydek and it partially rotted. Then I tried just plain perlite and it did so wonderfully! It was growing roots so fast that they were coming out of the top. I just had it in a plastic cup with no drainage and it loved it honestly. Then I messed up and put it in leca which I was excited about. And it completely rotted! All of the leaves fell off and it had no roots, it was just a stump. But I have it in water and it’s growing roots again so I’m just going to keep it in chunky perlite once it starts growing leaves again. Alocasia just love perlite. My neighbor was having trouble growing hers which was a stump as well so I recommended perlite and it started growing for her!

Your Dragon Scale is truly wonderful. Alocasia Silver Dragon is super cool - very beautiful, easy going and resilient (even when there is pest havoc around her). It´s simply the best plant ever 😀I think you might also like Alocasia Azlanii (shiny purple - simply unbelievable) and Ninja (Reginula hybrid - small, easy going, very pretty). Alocasias are awesome - since I got my first Alocasia Silver Dragon, I have an alocasia fever/obsession 😀
