What a trooper you are Beth! Not too many people have the confidence to show their less than perfect days, let alone being in a hospital bed with no makeup. So sorry you had the complication of Covid. Hope you continue to feel better each day!

I know this is an older video, but it has been a wonderful help to me. You have helped me not be as anxious. I’m facing hip surgery! I have osteoarthritis. Not only is it bone on bone but I have several spurs that are grabbing FLESH! I am a FIRM BELIEVER that if YOU haven’t experienced this YOU WILL NOT UNDERSTAND. I have postponed the surgery as long as possible but am at the end. NO ONE WANTS TO GO THROUGH THIS UNLESS NECESSARY. Having TRUST has absolutely nothing to do with it. You do your RESEARCH and find a competent surgeon! I also have degenerative disc disease INHERITED from my Mother and Grandmother. Not everyone is neglectful to their health. Much is HEREDITARY! I truly feel sorry for people that have no empathy for what others go through because they can’t understand since they were blessed with health bones!
    Bless their heart.

Thanks for the shout out Beth! You’re doing fabulous. And you’re right. Joint replacements let people continue to live active healthy lives! And yes your leg length difference from the replacement is normal. If your back starts to bother you, see your PT and they can add a thin lift inside your shoe to level out your pelvis, and that can help with any low back pain. Keep working hard on your strengthening exercises. ♥️♥️♥️♥️

I went to my podiatrist though, and he is 11 weeks out from his hip replacement with the same surgeon. He said it was two months before he felt really totally back to normal, but he really does now. I was very emotional on my follow up visits with my Dr. Shenkmen…he gave me my life back. I’m a physical therapist. People need replacements because of osteoarthritis or damage to a joint from an injury. Everyone as you age gets osteoarthritis. There is no getting around it. Its wear and tear arthritis. Some people just get it worse than others. And instead of having bone rubbing on bone and being in constant pain or have decreased quality of life it’s best to get a replacement. It’s easier now then years ago and recovery is quick.

You have done so well, you're recovery is astonishing. But I don't think this is a typical recovery time frame, I had a THR 5 days ago, and I'm still in agony. I can't get up without help as my leg is so swollen and painful. Just wanted to say this to anyone watching this in the same situation. We are all different. We all heal at different rates, so don't be hard on yourself if you're not recovering as well as this ❤

Yes, it depends on how you have the surgery. I had the anterior version from the front in which the recovery is a lot quicker.

In fact, I almost took a bit of before video of me limping around, but then I realized that I did not want to put that out into the universe. If you know what I mean. I want to forget that part as fast as I can. With regard to my knee replacement, for the first six months, I wasn’t sure I have done the right thing. Thanks for posting this, Beth. I watched a lot of videos people had posted about their surgeries. Your situation seemed closest to my own: about the same age, close to same weight, overall in good health, bone on bone osteoarthritis.
I decided yours would be the one I’d look to in terms of benchmarks. Your statement about how walking began to feel normal on day 6 was encouraging, so I aimed for that, while recognizing every situation is different, etc.
Now 8 days post-surgery, I feel good and walking is not a big deal. In fact, it feels so good, I understand why my doc ordered me to continue to use the walker until I came back for my follow up appointment. It’s too easy to forget you still have some restrictions and then get out over your skis! This means I’m on it for another 5 days but I don’t care. I am a little sore but not bad. My main problem is lack of sleep as I was a stomach sleeper. But my hip feels so much better, I’ve signed up for a dance class later in the year.
I appreciate you sharing your story!

I had my right THR last Tuesday, March 21, 2023. I am still using a walker but just about ready to transition to a cane. The first week is very difficult. I was wondering if your surgeon used the anterior or posterior approach? Mine used the later which they say takes a bit longer to recover from. I am not on a carnivore diet and I have to say my stomach could not take any kind of food after surgery other than plain and bland. So your not alone with that symptom! I wish you a speedy recovery and I would love to see your second week post surgery video! Have a great day!

I am three weeks out now and I do still feel stiff and I have to admit that when I start out, I live a little just like I did before the surgery. I do need to remember, though that it can take several months for everything to finally heal up. I actually have the anterior approach where they go through the front of the thigh. Why did they use the posterior on you? I know it must’ve had advantages but I’m just curious.

@@FiftyPlusBeauty thank you! And if you’re reading this and are thinking about a hip replacement, know that there are three different approaches. My understanding is that from the back is chosen much less now except if you have an old school doctor that isn’t trained/as comfortable with performing the new approaches. My first replacement was Feldman the side, which leads to quicker healing time than from the back and is less likely to experience a dislocation during healing. The newest approach is from the front and if you’re at a healthy weight and your doctor is trained, this is the approach that requires less recovery time and you should be walking unassisted much more quickly. Good luck to all, it’s definitely a worthwhile surgery.

Hi Jackie. Thank you so much for your compliments about my hair. Yes, that was one week after I got the hip replacement. It’s so funny you mention that. I love my mother-in-law to death, but she has this tendency to put things in rather a negative way when it comes to me. She saw that video and she said your hair doesn’t make you look quite so old! Aren’t mother-in-law’s wonderful! Lol!

Hi Beth. I'm glad you are doing well. I did not realize you have also had a knee replacement. I referred to your videos on that also. In September of 2022 I had an acroscopic surgery for a torn meniscus. The surgeon said it was a minor tear. After having a lot of pain months after and PT I saw another surgeon in the practice who has a very good repour for doing knee surgeries. To my surprise he said the torn meniscus was horrible, plus a lot of osteoarthritis. I am bone on bone now since I have had my entire meniscus removed, and you know how that limits quality of life. He does not like to jump into surgery without trying other methods of pain relief. He said cortisone shots will not help me, but he wanted to try the hyaluronic acid gels (series of 3). It's been 2 weeks since the last shot and if I'm fortunate enough to be one of the 60% that it works for, it can buy me some time for a replacement. Watching your knee replacement videos was a big help. I have seen so many comments on other sites that just makes me fearful to have it done. I am 66 and still feel I have a lot of life left. I am a Christian also, and my husband is my biggest supporter. He never thinks negative about any situation. Thanks again Beth for being venerable and posting these types of videos. It helps a lot of us who may be facing the same thing. Blessings for continued recovery.

Hi Kathy. Blessings to you too and I am so glad that the recent treatment helps with your knee pain. I truly hope that continues to help you. It sounds like you also have your Alan too! That is exactly like my Alan. He really is never negative which is amazing to me. We are both so lucky to get to go through life with someone so positive. God bless you and I will be thinking of you and hoping for your full recovery.

God bless you Beth, you are amazing! I'm pretty sure I need a hip replacement, would love to see your next video. What method did your doctor use? Cheers to continued good health!

Hi Pati. He did what it’s called the anterior approach. It is about 3 to 4 inch scar at the very top of your thigh. Kind of where your bikini would start. Apparently the anterior approach is much easier on the body in the healing as much quicker. The doctor would even let me go home the same day! I chose not to do that though because that idea kind of scared me.
