Every orthopedic surgeon should share this video with their patients. It answers many questions I've been having. Apparently, the answer is, "Yup! That's normal! You're exactly where you need to be " 🥰

I am a 60 yo female and had lateral hip replacement 08/28/24. This was the best summarisation of what to expect with a few exceptions for me at least one being not getting rid of the cane at about 2 weeks. I got rid of the walker this week which is 3 week postoperative and now I’m on cane. Also, I started at home physical therapy the day after surgery and the therapist had me doing leg lifts (as tolerated). I’ve had in home therapy 3 times a week and I also do the exercises everyday on my own 2 times a day. At this point I can do the leg lifts and lift my surgical leg pretty well. I walk very well with cane but still hop without it. I still have soreness but it gets better each day. I was told as he stated it’s not the implant but the lack of muscle strength. I start outpatient physical therapy next week. I had my 3 week post op appt this week and my surgeon was very pleased with my progress. Also, thankfully, the only swelling I had was at the incision area and around it but that has subsided. My advice to anyone that’s getting the surgery is to not compare yourself to others and think you are behind. Go at your own pace, do the exercises, when able move or walk as much as possible when you can and keep a positive attitude and make absolutely sure you up your protein 2 weeks before surgery and keep it up to help with healing. My incision looks great. No discolouration or even redness!! I’m walking farther each day. And lastly, as he stated you do see significant improvements daily. It’s small things we take for granted that will wow you especially after that 1 week mark.
Thanks again for this great explanation.

I am 4 days post op from right THR. I've had a right shoulder and knee replaced and the THR was the easiest surgery and recovery after 4 days. I have followed the instructions from the surgeon and hospital and have had no pain whatsoever. I took the meds and used ice. I have used the walker but walked up and down the block today with no walker and felt fine. Thank God that hip pain is over!!

I didn’t have to much swelling , I iced a lot and was on feet occasionally each day . I was on tramadol for 4 days then just Tylenol and Advil . I had more pain from the arthritis than the surgery so I was so happy to be free of the pain and was walking unaided in 2 weeks . Started riding the stationary bike 2 times a day after week 2 which I found really loosened me up . I started Pilates at week 5 which helped immensely. Now I’m week 16 after my second hip in 12 months . In the gym every day since week 4 /5 , back to cross fit now , mountain biking , hockey , squats , dead lifts , Bulgarians , box jumps
I forget I’ve even had my hips replaced. Very thankful to have my life back pain free 💪🏋️‍♀️🏄‍♂️🏒

I am a very active 67 yo home care nurse, post op 16 days and can say this is the BEST decision I have EVER made! Mine was congenitive.... bone on bone/osteoporosis. Much numbness down the IT band (feeling is coming back now). Home PT has helped, now I have out patient PT. Since day 1 I have walked each day approx 3500 ft. Yes I had swelling but NO pain thank God. Elevate and ice. I stopped the Tramadal 24 hours after surgery and just took Tylenol. I used the walker for 5 days then the cane now I'm walking on my own! I know...everyone is different but I just wanna say if you have pain and your quality of life is shot REPLACE IT! Don't walk....RUN. You wont regret it 😁 And don't forget....they can't hit a moving target so keep moving!

I am 14 days post and I still can’t walk without my walker. They think that I should but I had my left hip replaced and the next are going to do my right knee so I don’t have any strength in my right knee to hold myself up with my bad left hip And I’m doing the exercises like they say so. I don’t know what else I’m supposed to do. My right knee is terrible. It was a tossup as to what we were going to do first, but my left hip was in so much pain so I feel like I’m behindin my progress😢 any thoughts anybody?

A bad hip can cause pain in the knees so IMO you did right in fixing the hip first. Have patience w/the hip as and do your exercises everyday. I am now 3 months post op....drink protein shakes everyday for muscle repair. You got this!!!

Oh my goodness sir! I'm sitting here in tears listening to your video because nobody has explained to me what's happening after an hip replacement surgery that they went in through the front. My doctor has a team and only the nurses get back to me and they give me very vague answers. Every step by step process you're explaining is exactly what I'm going through. I tried the medication that they gave me at the hospital and it just made me projectile vomit I was super sick I stopped taking the medication at day two home from the hospital. The pain is almost unbearable . You explaining this everyday process is helping me immensely and giving me so much hope exclamation point I thank God for you! I switched from all Pharmaceuticals to Natural medications such as arnica and Arnica Gel and CBD oils and creams. Those help a lot. Having the knee pillows for your knees and your ankles helps tremendously with getting appropriate sleep . I turned 47, two days before my hip surgery. This was a follow-up from a drunk driver accident that I suffered from when I was only 24 years old. I got my left hip done first because it was the one that was causing me the most pain I literally couldn't even walk anymore up and down stairs or to a bathroom . I'm going to have to do the right hip which is going to be a little bit worse because there's already Hardware in that hip from the car accident you explaining this to me now that I'm in day 6 out of surgery give me a lot of Hope. Today for the first time I got up out of bed by myself walk to the bathroom by myself and use the bathroom by myself without a walker. However the rest of the day I am paying for it because I am in so much pain and extremely uncomfortable hearing what you said about day 6 me feel so much better. ❤ a million thanks to you for making this video!🙏🏾💗

I'm 12 days out and I wish I had listened to Dr. Y's video earlier. If I had I would have elevated the hip and applied ice more often. And get off of the opioids as soon as you can to avoid OIC. You'll be glad you did. And for those of you who have lost muscle strength, be sure and buy a toilet lift to assist you to stand up safely after using the toilet post-op.

They are so concerned with falls in the days immediately after that they don't talk much about what happens a week - 4 weeks out. I'm baffled that my checkup isn't until 13 weeks and they said I'm on restrictions until then... but I like your 6 week recommendations! I'm eager to get back to cycling.

I had a total hip replacement two weeks ago. My situation became very strange. I was operated on a Monday, was released from hsp on Wednesday (because I was throwing up). Once home I was constipated on that Wednesday. I was able to get it passed, but then all hell broke loose. I started bleeding badly rectally for days. I was brought back to the hsp on Friday and released again on Sunday after the bleeding stopped. There is no confirmed explanation as to what went wrong. They told me it was most likely a bout of Colitis, which I had never had before. The cause is unknown. Once I started bleeding I panicked and didn’t take the meds they had prescribed for me, as I was unsure if the drugs and narcotics I was given in the hsp had caused it. All seems fine now, but it scared the heck out of me.

Hi, I found your video on a hip surgery search. I am sitting here at day 7 post-op reading this, because after the second night of some terrible pain, I was curious if this is nornal. Your video description of the first 7 days was SPOT ON!!
At day 3, I honestly thought "this is a breeze" and by day 4 was ready to call my employer and go back to my remote desk job. I started taking more and more steps without my walker and decreased the pain meds. Well, then came day 6 and now 7, and your video is the exact reassurance that I needed. I'll make sure to take it a bit easier than I have been and work on the inflammation.
I compare the pain to a major fall. The first days are excruciating pain and inability to move, constant pain. After those first few days, the pain is still very present, but shifts to more muscle and aches and that is very much in line with what you said about pain coming from fighting the inflammation.
I was suprised how bruised and painful my knee is on the same anterior total hip replacement leg. The knee pain has been just as bad, if not worse than the hip. But, i also have "bone on bone" severe arthritis in both knees as well, with extreme pain even prior to the hip surgery. I just didnt expect bruising. Im assuming that's from those muscles being yanked during surgery and my knee being bent to it's flatest position on the surgical table for an extended amount of time.
Thank you for reassuring me that the expectation is to start seeing improvements now after day 7 when the inflammation should be going down!

Having right THR on 10/28. My biggest concern isn't mentioned in this video. That is infection risk and whether or not to take antibiotics prior to dental visits. The thing is, I probably have a little bleeding in my mouth 6 - 8 times per year just from accidentally biting myself when eating. Then what? The ADA and AAOS official positions is antibiotics are not necessary before dental cleanings, but my surgeon says I need to for the rest of my life.

Physicians are confident w/ their work but patient stays scared until it’s over. I wish there was a way to take the fear from regular people and make them confident in the procedure. I’m tired of hurting but a chicken too.
Gods blessings to the helpful surgeons 🙏

I am 60 had hip replacement on my left hip due to AVN in August 2024. Its almost 3 months and the still feel pain or discomfort in my groin area. I still need to have surgery to my right hip, looking at jan 2025. My left leg is shorter than the right due to the AVN and after surgery its still the same. I cannot sit for long due to the severe lower back pain and getting up is painful due to the right hip AVN. Will these pain stop after i have the second surgery. I still experience pain on my operated leg phirifomis muscles and severe knee pains on both knees.

I had a hip replacement about a month ago. I've progressed from a walker, to a cane and now I am walking on my own. Mass General Hospital is amazing!

how old are you? How long until walking unaided? I've heard everything from 4 days to 4 weeks. I'm looking at this procedure in the near future it looks like. I'm wondering how long until I will be running, hiking etc.

this advice is so right on. I’ve experienced everything that he is spoken of and here. I am at just completing three weeks. I spoke to the nurse today the surgeons nurse and she told me I have all the bruising behind my thigh and down my knee and my my calf because they use the tourniquet on me, is that correct? Doctor?
The toughest thing I have now is I wake up 2 to 3 times every night with just my whole leg aches and I don’t know how to address the aching

I’m hoping to hear something about an accidental partial hip surgery. This wasn’t planned and wasn’t due to arthritis. Plus, I was in the hospital for 7 days and then went to a good rehab facility for 2 weeks. Was home for a week or two, then completely blacked out and fell on broken hip side, but didn’t dislocate anything, fortunately, but spent another week in the hospital because I severely injured my head. I’m at 8 weeks now, still using the walker and going to physical therapy.

Great video, Doc! I’m post-op day-1 today. Had a right total hip done yesterday. Walked easily and independently ‘yesterday’ when I got home. Woke up this morning and I can tell today’s gonna be different. This morning it feels like someone beat my thigh repeatedly with a baseball bat while I was asleep.
Regardless, I’m glad I had it done. I’ve got a couple weeks off before returning to the ER, and have my fingers crossed.
Lots of good tips and advice from your video about what I can expect in the days and weeks ahead. Appreciate it very much!
    Just subscribed, by the way!
