This video really decreased my anxiety about my hip surgery 3 days ago. The pain I am experiencing in the soft tissue has been overwhelming. I'm so glad I found this!
Most realistic and useful hip replacement talk I’ve heard yet!
The absolute best explanation of what to expect after a hip replacement.
outstanding. First explanation I've had for the burning sensation I have in my thigh. Just had my left thigh done three days ago. Thigh is swelled a half again the size of my right. Started to worry until I saw this video. Thank you.
Doc, I'm gonna give it to you straight: You are tremendous! Your eye contact and delivery are fantastic. Great communication!
I’m getting a hip replacement in just about a month. None of the videos that I have watched over time mentioned anything about the leg swelling increasing and the pain increasing so many days after surgery. This video was the most informative video I have watched. Thanks
So true this video is way more informative than any I have seen so far concerning inflammation and swelling
@@patriciahairston5382 I’m not sure how my body is going to respond to the surgery since everyone is different. At least I’ll be prepared now. Great video!
I didn’t have to much swelling , I iced a lot and was on feet occasionally each day . I was on tramadol for 4 days then just Tylenol and Advil . I had more pain from the arthritis than the surgery so I was so happy to be free of the pain and was walking unaided in 2 weeks . Started riding the stationary bike 2 times a day after week 2 which I found really loosened me up . I started Pilates at week 5 which helped immensely. Now I’m week 16 after my second hip in 12 months . In the gym every day since week 4 /5 , back to cross fit now , mountain biking , hockey , squats , dead lifts , Bulgarians , box jumps
I forget I’ve even had my hips replaced. Very thankful to have my life back pain free 💪🏋️♀️🏄♂️🏒
My surgery is July 8, 2024 and I am in such a panic state. It’s been really hard trying to get out of it. I know that’s not gonna help me going into it. Ideas are greatly appreciated.😢
@@peggymcdonnell1379 my surgery is sometime tomorrow. There are times when I get nervous or even scared. But, I know it will be worth it in the end. I can’t go on living like this!!
I had total hip replacement 3 days ago and this video is right on the money with what I’ve experienced. Hearing that it’s gonna get better is really reassuring. It’s easy to be impatient in the beginning but having the right expectations helps. Thank you Dr. Y.
I am a very active 67 yo home care nurse, post op 16 days and can say this is the BEST decision I have EVER made! Mine was congenitive.... bone on bone/osteoporosis. Much numbness down the IT band (feeling is coming back now). Home PT has helped, now I have out patient PT. Since day 1 I have walked each day approx 3500 ft. Yes I had swelling but NO pain thank God. Elevate and ice. I stopped the Tramadal 24 hours after surgery and just took Tylenol. I used the walker for 5 days then the cane now I'm walking on my own! I know...everyone is different but I just wanna say if you have pain and your quality of life is shot REPLACE IT! Don't walk....RUN. You wont regret it 😁 And don't forget....they can't hit a moving target so keep moving!
You understand well how it is thanks you for your advice.
I am 14 days post and I still can’t walk without my walker. They think that I should but I had my left hip replaced and the next are going to do my right knee so I don’t have any strength in my right knee to hold myself up with my bad left hip And I’m doing the exercises like they say so. I don’t know what else I’m supposed to do. My right knee is terrible. It was a tossup as to what we were going to do first, but my left hip was in so much pain so I feel like I’m behindin my progress😢 any thoughts anybody?
A bad hip can cause pain in the knees so IMO you did right in fixing the hip first. Have patience w/the hip as and do your exercises everyday. I am now 3 months post op....drink protein shakes everyday for muscle repair. You got this!!!
Thank you, I had my hip surgery 5 weeks ago and have been giving myself a hard time thinking I should be out of pain after doing my exercises by now and should I be pushing myself more but your explanation has made me realise that im doing ok really and its ok to be still taking pain meds when needed.
I had my 2nd THA six weeks ago. I've always wanted to know why I was feeling what I was feeling with my first replacement and my recent one. I've watched maybe a hundred videos for explanations but never really found the answers I was looking for until this one. It is by far the best, most informative and practical explanation that I've found. Great job Dr. Yerasimides! and thank you!
Great explanation. 5 wks out and still have crazy pain. I have been doing to much.
One of the most upfront, honest and thorough explanations of what it will feel like! I'm having surgery in a month, and though I understand, I'm worried about the swelling to expect. At least I know now. Thanks!
Dr Y did my surgery and it went exactly as he described. These videos are so helpful at easing the anxiety about the surgery.
This video was super helpful. I am two weeks post surgery from staggered hip replacements. Struggling with how I am feeling as though I should be able to handle more. This put video provided a realistic perspective and will allow me to relax about my recovery process. Thank you!
Thank you so much for your clear and concise explanation. I’m one week out from my hip replacement. You described my recovery exactly and made me feel much better about my progress.
Getting ready I was told no smoking 6 weeks I have surgery I am so happy that soon I will be on the healing end of this pain.
This is so reassuring. What you describe has been my experience in the first week, but I keep reading contradictory information online ("Don't overdo it! But definitely don't rest too much!") that has caused a lot of anxiety about what is normal and how to balance healing with movement. Thank you!
My wife and I are both patients at Louisville Hip and Knee. They have performed 3 knee replacements and 2 hips. Everyone there treats you like family. They will spend all the time with you that you need. You can do no better than selecting them for treatment.
I'm so impressed with this video cos it's giving answers yo what I'm going through I'm 1week from surgery thank you Dr
Thank you for making this video. I am day 6 post op and have listened to this 5 times as a reminder everything I am feeling is normal. I went down to one crutch on day 5 and it did make me much more achy over night since I am now putting more weight on my leg. I will pull back slightly and rest more today. You mentioned not to do leg raises too soon and I also started toe tap marches which might have aggravated my thigh as well. Overall, so happy the surgery is behind me and happy to have found your video.
Thank you ,I just had a total hip replacement 2 weeks ago. Went well walked I used for 5 days ,and now my Cane ,but it is a slow process I walk around inside and out ,not going up or down stairs in time this will happen. Thank you I feel better listening to you
That's brilliant advice. I'm at six weeks now after my hip replacement and what you said is exactly correct. I ache after doing my exercises and wandered if this was right. But now you've said it's normal is a relief. It is getting better day by day,so looking forward to the twelve week period to see how well it is.
An excellent video!
Dr Yerasmides -subtlety comprehensive talk
Great video, Doc! I’m post-op day-1 today. Had a right total hip done yesterday. Walked easily and independently ‘yesterday’ when I got home. Woke up this morning and I can tell today’s gonna be different. This morning it feels like someone beat my thigh repeatedly with a baseball bat while I was asleep.
Regardless, I’m glad I had it done. I’ve got a couple weeks off before returning to the ER, and have my fingers crossed.
Lots of good tips and advice from your video about what I can expect in the days and weeks ahead. Appreciate it very much!
Just subscribed, by the way!
Thank you. Very helpful.
That was very helpful - big thanks :)
Brilliant video. Thank you
very helpful! Great explanation of expectations, best I've seen.
Excellent video. I'm 2 weeks post-op, and this answered most of my questions about pain.
Excellent video! The best explanation I have found ! Thank you !
Thanks for putting together this video; very helpful in setting expectations!
It's today 🎉
This is so spot on. You were so accurate with everything you said. Thank you.
Luck to find such a valuable info, Thanks Doc. Stay Blessed❤❤❤
thank you for your valuable information .you have been a great help
That was very helpful Doc
Thank you for this video! I'm at 10 weeks post surgery at age 75. I still have some ache at the top of my hip, but no pain.
Thank you Doctor
Excellent video, Doctor!! Thank you for the most detailed explanation of post-op expectation. 🙏🏻
Omg! this is by far the best breakdown I’ve watched on what to expect after my upcoming THR. Thank you so much!
That was my experience @week 5 now,I'm certainly listening to you DR! I'm a RN too,so the most important quality to have is patience!
Day 3 of THR and really feeling it. Best video I've watched and questions answered. Thank you.
Thank you,new hip 3 days ago this realllly helped in a simple way,not so worried anymore. Thank You😊
1 day post op and really appreciate your video on what to expect. Excellent! I'll be referring to it as I progress.
wow. I've been searching for this straight talk for the 6 days since my surgery. Thank heavens I found this. You have described my situation exactly. You're good.
Had total hip replacement July 2nd 2024 he answered all my questions great video doctor
This is FANTASTIC. Thank you so much for being so informative. I live in the UK and am a former professional Ballet Dancer. I will be having my THR in july.of this year and your advice has really helped me to understand the healing process. I cannot understand why somebody would not have you as their surgeon . Sound advice.
My hip replacement is next month. What you have said is very helpful for me. My expectations are different now.
I truly appreciate the details here. I had my hip replaced three weeks ago and getting some details about the progress within recovery and how things should feel, is great! They are so concerned with falls in the days immediately after that they don't talk much about what happens a week - 4 weeks out. I'm baffled that my checkup isn't until 13 weeks and they said I'm on restrictions until then... but I like your 6 week recommendations! I'm eager to get back to cycling.
Hi, I found your video on a hip surgery search. I am sitting here at day 7 post-op reading this, because after the second night of some terrible pain, I was curious if this is nornal. Your video description of the first 7 days was SPOT ON!!
At day 3, I honestly thought "this is a breeze" and by day 4 was ready to call my employer and go back to my remote desk job. I started taking more and more steps without my walker and decreased the pain meds. Well, then came day 6 and now 7, and your video is the exact reassurance that I needed. I'll make sure to take it a bit easier than I have been and work on the inflammation.
I compare the pain to a major fall. The first days are excruciating pain and inability to move, constant pain. After those first few days, the pain is still very present, but shifts to more muscle and aches and that is very much in line with what you said about pain coming from fighting the inflammation.
I was suprised how bruised and painful my knee is on the same anterior total hip replacement leg. The knee pain has been just as bad, if not worse than the hip. But, i also have "bone on bone" severe arthritis in both knees as well, with extreme pain even prior to the hip surgery. I just didnt expect bruising. Im assuming that's from those muscles being yanked during surgery and my knee being bent to it's flatest position on the surgical table for an extended amount of time.
Thank you for reassuring me that the expectation is to start seeing improvements now after day 7 when the inflammation should be going down!
Thank you for this very informative video. I am 6 weeks post anterior total hip replacement and my experience is exactly what you have described. I was worried that I still have some pain but your explanation was very helpful.
It was a wonderful vdo on post hip replacement surgery. I am diagnosed with AVN right femur head (both but r>l) and advised hip replacement surgery. I am a bit scared of surgery. Through your vdo I got courage to go through it.
I had a hip replacement about a month ago. I've progressed from a walker, to a cane and now I am walking on my own. Mass General Hospital is amazing!
how old are you? How long until walking unaided? I've heard everything from 4 days to 4 weeks. I'm looking at this procedure in the near future it looks like. I'm wondering how long until I will be running, hiking etc.
this advice is so right on. I’ve experienced everything that he is spoken of and here. I am at just completing three weeks. I spoke to the nurse today the surgeons nurse and she told me I have all the bruising behind my thigh and down my knee and my my calf because they use the tourniquet on me, is that correct? Doctor?
The toughest thing I have now is I wake up 2 to 3 times every night with just my whole leg aches and I don’t know how to address the aching
I have had two full hip replacements first one was 8/May 23 and the second was 30 April 24 and I still can't cut my toe nails, tie shoe laces. I had no pain at all after both replacements.
I’m hoping to hear something about an accidental partial hip surgery. This wasn’t planned and wasn’t due to arthritis. Plus, I was in the hospital for 7 days and then went to a good rehab facility for 2 weeks. Was home for a week or two, then completely blacked out and fell on broken hip side, but didn’t dislocate anything, fortunately, but spent another week in the hospital because I severely injured my head. I’m at 8 weeks now, still using the walker and going to physical therapy.
I am 12 wk post op for a THR. called the Dr's nurse today to make sure some of my precaution could be lifted. She advised me not to bend more than 90 degrees yet. Well I was told by the surgeon at 12 weeks I could do my normal things. Well I help my hubby with our rentals and yesterday I caulked two bathrooms a kitchen and laundry room. But she said then don't cross your legs for a year. So what is what. I'm walking daily and yes was muscle sore but no worse than exercising. I am 75 years old!
Dr. Jonathan, your video calm me... I've been operated almost 5 months ago... I'm 67...and I feel pain still...like a contraction... I'd like to ask ..if it's normal....or what else I should do?. Muchas gracias...Greating from Mexico city ❤
Im 4 wks out & still on a walker.
Everyone recovers differently. Im in a couple groups & and it seems that the ppl like me dont post much about not walking on their own or the pain they feel.
Just know the things you hear like in this video you might not have this recovery.
And thats normal too!
Your videos should be recommended viewing for the patient, by the surgeon scheduled to perform your hip replacement. I completely reviewed my post op and pre-op instructions today and did not find any of this information. A one sided sheet of post op instruction had a check mark for "weight bearing as tolerated. Use a walker, cane, crutches as needed". Under "hip precautions" Anterior approach: No hip precautions but avoid any excessive motions or leg positions". Then a short sentence on leaving the dressing on until the follow up at the clinic, okay to shower and don't soak the dressing. For me the post op information was not nearly enough for a very active 77 year young man that wants to continue diving, hiking, skiing, flying my aerobatic airplanes or riding motorcycles.
Is this particular to anterior procedure? I had posterior and no where near this quick a recovery.
How about doing other “personal” activities?
Are talking about anterior or posterior approach? I had posterior 5 months ago. The thigh pain was horrible. I’m 54. I’m back to light jogging/pickle ball/tennis and feel no pain. I don’t think I could have played pickle ball at 3 months.
I had posterior surgery nearly nine weeks ago, by four weeks I did not need the crutches, by five weeks I was back on the crutches, I have had a shooting pain through my buttock into my lower back with a burning sensation, although that has now gone, but now I have knee pain and pain in my quad and sometimes my groin, when I sit I do not have any pain, I do not know if this is normal, those that I know who have had hip surgery they had anterior surgery and they all were on their feet and very little pain, oh how I wish I were able to be pain free. On the up side I hardly had any swelling, no bruising and my scar although large healed perfectly
3 weeks after surgery, I walk , but I get very tired
How does one know if the swelling is the normal type or developing compartment type situation? Or does that happen?
I broke my 2nd hip in Jan and I’m still walking with a cane. When I broke my first hip I recovered very quickly. I have been exercising diligently. Any ideas why I’m still having to use a cane?
Dear Doctor Yerasimides: What if a patient took great pains pre-surgery for 7 years to strengthen his 'abductor' and other core muscles (so as to avoid HRS). This person- aside from the hip issue cum limp, was in very good shape: 5'10 180, powerlifting, walking, gardening. Would he be significantly less inclined to develop the post-surgical limp you refer to circa 7:52? Thank you. Robert Allen, Ph.D.
Is topical CBD as good as ingested CBD?
I Am at 29weeks anterior approach still get swelling everyday i healing very slow. My hip feels all scratchy inside.
@jamesherchel5827 I'm at 17 weeks posterior approach and still swollen
Definitely not a good experience
Very informative thanks dr
