- The Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx plans to be tuition-free for students, after a $1bn donation from former professor Dr Ruth Gottesman.

The donation is among the largest to date for an educational institution in the US. Half of Einstein’s most recent class of students are New Yorkers, according to the medical school - 59% are women and the majority are people of color. And Einstein’s students graduate with higher amounts of debt than other medical students at New York City schools. Gottesman said she hopes that it makes medical school more accessible to those who could not previously afford it.

Welp, Albert Einstein just became the most competitive med school in the country
it’s already super competitive haha, if I’m not wrong the acceptance rate is 2%
@@lover5968 According to their admissions page (for the class of 2027), “There are 183 students in the first-year class. 9,012 individuals applied for entrance and 948 were interviewed.”
@@lover5968yeah but now they will have NYU type of competition 😬
Actually there are a few other medical schools in the US which are free.
@@monarnyc”Actually”…golly.
As a doctor in debt still studying, I cried even if I'm not from the college.
I get it, the struggle is real during school. But doctor’s in the states make so much money they catch up fast... you’ll be debt free by 40 and save more money than everyone else made between the ages of 20-40 combined in just a few years…
Doctor’s have very important jobs and they are paid accordingly. What they don’t understand is how hard it is for people to save extra money when they only take home a “regular” salary. 90% of it goes away to living, people can’t even save for retirement. Where as the extra $100k+ savings per year as a doctor is a decade of savings for others…
Anyways, please take that as encouragement. Life is way harder not being a doctor
It’s still worth it though. You’ll be making a net positive in the long run.
The problem is, weather these ppl will give back to society or make everything capitalistic for monetary gain
I'm not a doctor, I'm not in debt, I'm not American, but I cried too
@@TND.4.worldpeaceyour comment is blatently obvious jealousy because no university would ever accept you in a million years 😅
1 billion is an insane amount. They can teach thousands of people for free with that much
Hence the auditorium?
It's an investment, too
That's what they intend to do.
yeah imagine if it was possible to fund it regularly SOMEHOW
@@matthowardtvfor who though?
As someone who paid for his college, nothing makes me happier than to see young people not starting life shackled with debt.
I mean they well be shackled, just in a different way

To be fair, most of these people will end up making $700,000 plus per year eventually.
@@sharpe52312 "eventually" that eventually is when they're 40-50 years old.
Also, $700k is only if you're in an admin position and been working there for decades. Most general medicine doctors only make $200k. It's only higher if you're in a specialty like anesthesia, but it also requires another 6 years of traning AFTER spending 8 years in undergrad and med school.
Still anesthesiologist only makes $300k-500k, still not 700k

Now that is how billionaires can make a difference

@mclingo there's absolutely no guarantee that if rich people weren't as rich the surplus money would automatically go to causes like this.

what a wonderful gesture , ALSO the University will keep it's original name . this was not a vanity donation like many are
It will live on, so in some sense it is
@wardtv There's no "in some sense". It either is a vanity donation, or it's not. This is NOT. Keep in mind the definition of "vanity". A vanity donation is one that, by definition, comes with stipulations that benefit the donor; for example, naming a building, pavilion, program, or an entire school after the donor. This particular donation came with absolutely no self-serving stipulations whatsoever, and is therefore NOT a *vanity* donation in any sense of the word. Once this story is out of the news, no one except those benefiting directly will know who this woman is unless the school choses to honor her of their own accord and keep her name alive there. Her name will not appear on buildings, signs, campus street names, etc. unless the school CHOOSES to do that for her. She did not demand that she do it in exchange for her donation. That's the very OPPOSITE of a vanity donation.
Tbh I don't care if something changes a name or not, what matters if whether the gesture actually matters or whether it's just some visible but pretty meaningless thing. This here matters though, a lot, whatever her intentions would have been
I don’t think it really matters much if they name a building after someone. That’s not vanity in my eyes however I understand what you mean by the term
Yeah...I don't think the students would care either way 😆
With the high cost of tuition fees wonder how long the 1bn will last.
Edit
Just checked. Apparently a long time.
Dr. Gottesman’s husband died in 2022 at age 96. “He left me, unbeknownst to me, a whole portfolio of Berkshire Hathaway stock,” she recalled. The instructions were simple: “Do whatever you think is right with it,” she recalled.
It was overwhelming to think about, so at first she didn’t. But her children encouraged her not to wait too long.
When she focused on the bequest, she realized immediately what she wanted to do, she recalled. “I wanted to fund students at Einstein so that they would receive free tuition,” she said. There was enough money to do that in perpetuity, she said.
How sweet
They invest the money to keep bringing in income. They don't just go and spend the billion dollars on expenses.
That's amazing ❤ what an angel.
@@selilatte If you place $1 billion in a high interest savings account at about 5% apr, you get back $50 million a year.
Yearly tuition fees at medical schools are about $50,000 a year, that will cover about 1000 students.
There are about :
697 Doctor of Medicine, 166 Doctor of Philosophy, 130 M.D./Ph.D ,265 post-doctoral fellows at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
So even a basic (safe) investment like this should be all that is needed.

@taro7145 it takes 7-8 yrs to become a doctor. In the residency they get paid lesser than nurses even. If I were running that University, I would say “this is how much tuition is. If you graduate, you don’t have to pay it”.
I think that's the default state of young people. Especially ones able to get into med school. Idealistic, energetic people.
Their mission is to prepare a diverse body of students to become knowledgeable, compassionate physicians and innovative scientific investigators, and to create new knowledge.

Just look at the comments in this video. Americans are so individualistic that they think if some people paid, everyone has to pay forever otherwise its unfair.
@@JardsonJeanIt's an awful mentality that so many here have and it's not sustainable. People won't realize it until it's too late. Similar sentiments are shared when people's loans are forgiven. Have you not figured out? Our government hates us and wants us to suffer.
Wish it was free so I didn't have to study outside the country. I would love to study in the US but the loans and cost is too much I just had to avoid.
But to be fair , many colleges are also much harder to get into over there than it is here. Over here you have most schools that would accept pretty much anyone unless it’s an Ivy League like Harvard, ect .But in turn you have to pay . My school for example used to be free, but once they started accepting much more students , along side other monetary issues within the city at the time , they had to start charging money.

This is so heartwarming but heartbreaking at the same time
It will be tuition free for 1 batch of students then the board will find a way to spend all that money on construction projects using contractors who give generous kickbacks and in a few years the college will start tuition again, this time twice as much because it became a prestigious college now
Meanwhile me, still confused what took so long for this to happen while my own country has already implemented free college tuition for so long. It literally ended our burden and made our college life easier to manage. The only debt we need to repay is that we should return our service to the country by working here for at least 4 years before we can be free to work abroad or just stay here.

IMO the government should work to identify fields that are experiencing or will experience a shortage and help align subsidies and resources for students, to make those fields as low cost and desirable as possible. It should be something that’s reviewed and adjusted bi-annually to ensure our nation can continue to function and navigate shifts and changes in the marketplace and general service sectors while reducing potential flooding.
