    I have the Festool vacuum system (2 bases and the variety of clamp pads). I dismissed it as too expensive for quite a while but it’s proved to be a game changing tool. Being able to spin/tilt as well as hold narrow parts (rails/stiles) has been invaluable. Can’t overstate how much of a time saver its been. It’s held up to frequent use in my (commercial) environment. Thanks for the video. Whatever you choose, vacuum clamps are awesome.

    Vacuum chucks have been used for years. The pads can easily be made from wood as long as it is sealed. Sealer and couple of coats of lacquer are adequate sealer for wood. Self adhesive foam weatherstripping makes the between the pad and the workpiece. We have used standard air hose with quick connect fittings screwed into the wood. There are plenty of DIY example for anyone who searches.

      Have friend who rebuilds stand up bass instruments ( the old expensive ones ) he's been using vacuum clamping since the early 1980's, has lots of ingenious ones all using a simple vacuum pump as demo'd here, and bags he makes for various applications. The hold-down is also simple to make yourself, if you wish. Flatsurface, holes in substrate, sealed edges ( think foam tape ) line to pump.

    Can also invert an old 30gal compressor. Works very well. With a stock head you can pull 1bar and you get a ton of volume (well 30 gallons :)

    I make these from sealed MDF and use a Fein Turbo I through a hole in the workbench and it works great. I do a lot of the same furniture parts and shape the vacuum hold down boards the same shape as the parts with weather seal around the edges. Works much better than trying to use a square hold down for a curved work piece.

    I have used with my students self-made shallow downdraft boxes for stuff like this. Suction for shop vac or from our school shop's central vacuum system. It works well, until someone is starting jointer or even worse thickness planer.

    We routed raised panel cabinet doors out of hdf, using jigs,downdraft, and vacuum in the early 90's.
    Its just a block as long as it will hold threads for air fittings,(we used clear plastic) .
    To seal the edges ,use foam/ rubber adhesive backed tape.
    Cross drill for the manifold, and keep the pump away from fine dust.
    Whoever remembers, 3/4 hdf sheets weighed 90lbs per sheet,I can still smell the dust lol

    if you seal the mdf with shellac that will improve the vacuum. mdf is actually porous and the pump can pull air thru it reducing the vacuum clamp's holding power.

    Curious...how does the vacuum release work? Definitely more affordable option to the Vac Sys. Always appreciate your tool recommendations!
    You might revisit looking at Vac Sys. A couple nice things about it is the pivot/swivel of the head as well as pad size options. Comes in handy holding narrower pieces.

    • @InsiderCarpentry
      @InsiderCarpentry  4 года назад +1

      For the release, I think if you use the pad with something slick it will stick much harder. The maker of this pad has a foot pedal type switch that he uses to quickly stick/unstick. But with raw wood I can just pull stuff off the pad because it doesn't stick as hard.

    Spencer, as a woodturner I have utilized vacuum chucks for finishing the bottom of bowls and other vessels; however, when Covid-19 needed ventilators, the refurbished pumps that pull 25 lbs. per square inch are no longer available. Do you know how much pulling power that vacuum pump facilitates?

      The Amazon link shows it is capable of -85Kpa, or 25.1 inches of mercury, 12.33 pounds force per square inch. Comparing vacuum pumps is difficult because of the units conversion process.

    Sorry you just discovered these things , Like someone else said they have been around forever. I have been making them for years out of scrap plywood for custom sizes I needed. Dont know why you are using a vac pump you just get a vacuum generator venturi for your compressor for $20. My units can support hundreds of pounds I was supersized that you are able to lift your material off the pad. It would usually lift your entire work bench off the ground. Well have fun, they are very useful .

    • @InsiderCarpentry
      @InsiderCarpentry  4 года назад

      From what I've seen the reason the vacuum was not strong was because of the raw wood. Its much stronger with sealed materials from what I understand. I will have to look into the vacuum generator you mentioned.

    Wouldn’t a non slip pad also do the same job?? Thanks for the video

    • @moeszyslack4676
      @moeszyslack4676 4 года назад +3

      Non slip pads don't remain non slip for long. Constantly need replacing after the saw dust makes them slip. Some also leave stains. Can't apply much lateral force at all either, they are awful for that. A stronger vacuum pump would allow even better hold. You'd get about 1,400lbs/Sq.Ft. with a vacuum clamp no way a non slip pad will do that.

    • @ThisTall
      @ThisTall 4 года назад +1

      You can’t apply side pressure to the work piece on a non slip pad without using 1 hand to hold it down. The vac pad frees you up to use both hands.
