- TAC Driver 2.75" vs. AAE Hybrid HP Vanes // Shootout
I ordered a dozen arrows from Adam's Precision Archery - he built me some sweet arrows with TAC Driver 2.75" vanes. I wanted to test their speed and flight characteristics versus what I am currently running, pretty interesting results... #elkshape #abt

Yeah dude, use the same nocks for both arrows. Nock fit will change trajectory.
I believe the Driver being a longer vain at 2.75 will create more drag as well. Maybe try the test with the 2.25, that will match up better with the Hybrid.
Different nocks can make a big difference.
Didn't look like you were shooting well enough at long distance to really tell anything.
Love the non bias brotha, this are what they are and that what we need to hear. No fluff. Mahalo for your work
Moved from AAE to TAC vanes and will never look back 🤙
2 things.....I believe your differences in impact (high/low) was due to the different nocks. Also, the TAC Vanes being more ridgid, can also possibly help with blood trails on a full pass-through. I strongly believe those stiffer, more ridgid vanes can/will help with blood loss due to not folding over while going through an animal. More or less keeping the wound channel open, longer. Hope this makes sense, as it's hard to explain via text. Just my 2 cents. Keep these awesome videos coming, brother!! Thanks Dan
Great video. Can not wait to see the new pad/setup.
My experience has been the exact opposite. Normally for me TAC driver 2.75's always group higher than the rest
Agree…I think there is less drag with the TAC’s 2.75. I’ve always struggled with “trusting” the consistency of the TAC Driver’s 2.75. I just do not have the confidence with them as I feel AAE Max Hunter’s, AAE AIRAZR 26’s and SUPER SABRES are consistent and “more” trustworthy.
Tac drivers just bend so easily and then your kinda F'd.
@@sjmonty19 they do bend but normally bounce back pretty well.
Agreed. I think Tac 2.75. Have had great success with a heavy helical and fixed breadheads.
Nice input! Last part of the video was best, lol always check with your surroundings… And u did super well,,, and I also ran tax vanes for a season and were ok but going back to aae
Yeah I did a bunch of screwing around like that too with different about six or seven different veins and I noticed that the boating ones like them azer they seem to hit lower than a lot of stuff but my silent nights in the SK2s always seem to hit higher than the rest. Thank you for your information
I use the Matrix 2” and that out performed a lot of vanes. But also Dudley even says different colors have different weights and impact differently. The more transparent the less weight I believe. Cool video man! I like it!
Good luck with the move and see the new setup.
Arrows are an area that you can easily modify and play with. Diameter, brands, vanes, and point weights. You can play with helical and clocking direction. I’m currently running an Easton 6.5 with TAC vanes that group great. But I’m still thinking about micro arrows and different vanes. Learn what is out here and something might be a better fit.
I would do a re-test after switching nocks. Nock fitment absolutely affects your impact down range
Love the way AAE vanes shoot, but if you breathe on them they tear. TAC vanes are very durable in my experience.
The hybrids yes. That’s why I stick with the AAE MAX
Moved away from AAE because the vanes weren't very durable.
Great video!
Dan, you are the man. I can’t tell you how much I’ve learned from you about archery. Because of the elkshape RUclips channel I’m ten times the better archer than I was before I found your channel. Seriously Dan thank you so much. This probably sounds weird but I hope to cross paths with you one day just to thank you in person. God bless you and your family. #ABT
My experience with TAC 2.75 and 2.25 drivers is very good. They steer fixed blades very well AND they’re very tough when they get knocked around in 3D competition by other shooters. Good starting trial Dan. Really, people are concerned about your backyard? You’re an intelligent guy who considers everything you can before an action. They should have known better. Looking forward to a follow-up
I've found the same thing in testing arrow combinations. For some reason that blazer style vane always hits higher on targets compared to using the lower profile vanes, as if it has more lift to carry the arrow further. Also consider the point weights because momentum downrange is a thing, but in your case, they were close enough that wasn't really a factor. Vanes that are taller as close to the nock as possible provide better steerage / correction
Ayyy I literally just ordered some custom RIP TKO V1 w/ TAC Vanes Today from Adams Precision Archery!!! Super Excited To get em!!!
oooo boi, that calf at 4:00!
I second what Tyler said about the tac vanes being very durable and the aae vanes i always shoot through and rip them. I have yet to rip off a tac vane or anything of the sort. Fyi, i just bought a Title from Podium Archery so i cant wait to shoot the cheat code and see how i do. Love the videos guys, keep them coming.
Should have put down range velocity in since you had the lab radar out.
Interesting video
I’ve been shooting Easton/bohning bully vanes this year and they check all the boxes for me. Light, durable, stiff, lick and stick and cost
Thank you
All the ones I’ve tried DCA still continue to be my favorite all around for control, flight, sound and now his minis for mechanical and regular for fixed. And more durable than AAE and not as stiff as TAC. DCA is my go to👊🏼
Thanks for the tests Dan!! Cool to see a faster and lighter arrow drop more.
I put it more into the larger veins creating more wind drag than the actual weight of the arrow. 3 grains is minimal
But do the HP’s cause just as much drag because they’re taller? 🤔 I’m thinking the Easton lite knocks (or whatever they call them) may be fitting his serving a tad different compared to the IP 4’s
You should check out the TAC summit vanes. Pretty close to the same exact profile as the AAE hybrid, but stiffer, and they only weigh 4.8 grains. You can still get a pretty decent helical on them too, even with the stiff material. I've used the lca vane master pro to put up to a 4.5 degree helical. It just takes a bit of time to make sure the jig is setup for perfect vane contact.
I run TAC veins the 2.75 tac drivers and I have had amazing results! I have tries boning heats and the aae max stealth and a few others . I will definitely stick with the TAC veins
Congrats on moving to the country. That’s my dream!
It looked like the TAC was coming out of the bow a little nock left vs AAE had perfect flight. The slow motion definitely showed a difference in flight.
I love the stuff you guys put out but you have to compare like for like. Need to compare the TAC Summit vanes to the AAE vanes hybrid. Just my thought. Keep up the good work.
Dan, I tested the AAE Hybrid HP vanes with different degree helical with the lab radar last week. I found the offset and lesser degree helical had the same outcome - past 60 yards the higher degree helical maintained point of aim point of impact and the lesser degree and offset consistently hit lower. Another odd outcome was the offset vanes were consistently 2-3fps slower past 30 yards. I expected the higher degree to parachute and slow down more but that wasn’t the case in my experience. Keep up the testing!
@trips2794 I've been having a similar experience. I was criticized for using Arizona e-z fletch mini max helical with the TAC 2.25 vans and AAE 26. I was told to use a real jig and only do a 2 degree offset for better long range performance. So far the opposite has been true.
@@garrettaguillard Yep - I use the mini max as well and it’s proven to be great. I tried the Bohning in that testing process and the factory Victory offsets.
I've seen the same results. Seemed like big offset helped down range and barely slowed them down up close.
Hope to see and talk to you in Utah this year.
This is perfect timing!! I have run hybrids the last few years and have been thinking about swinging by Lancaster and picking up a pack of TAC veins. It’s handy being 20 mins from Lancaster lol
If I’d live 20’ from Lancaster I’d be broke!!!!!😂
@@lbtn1 thankfully it’s 20 from work. About an hour from home and in the middle of nowhere so I hardly ever find myself there. If I’m up that way it’s usually with the wife and that kills the chances of an archery shop stop lol
Hey Brother. I'm just waiting on your store to get some #ElkShape Hybrid HP's in white and green stocked up so I can try them out. I have two dozen RIP's with Blazers on them right now as a substitute in the mean time. Glad you found a house in the country. For 10 years I lived in the city and wasn't very happy. But, I found a small house that I have plenty of room for a range. Mine goes parallel with some power lines with woods on both sides. I can shoot as far as I want and not worry about hitting anything. Life is so much better now.
Those are great looking arrows but I shoot off 1or2 vanes a week and when I do I replace all 3 vanes and wrap. Therefore I make all my own arrows.
You need to try the AAE AIRAZR 26’. Very quiet and the stiffest AAE material compared to hybrids or max.
very very interesting. I'm a tac vanes only guy for the last 2 years and you got me thinkin.
Edit: the slow mo on the tac vanes doesn't look great here, definite difference from the aae's... makes me wanna match helical and test, maybe the offset is too weak, and not getting the spin to stabilize as well; robbing some energy?
Tacs 💥✅🏆🥇🐐hey just a suggestion ? Instead of 2.75”s on the tacs …give the 2.0” a whirl 😊same offset three flecth
You don’t have to explain yourself to some of these dudes. Honestly, a lot of them are just jealous because what you have going on! It’s lame how people worry about another persons success, or judge their setups. I say be happy for others and handle your own sh**! Anyways, great video. I have tested the Tac vanes too before, I like them but I still feel like Max Stealths are better. Thanks again Dan for a cool video.
Could you fletch the TAC with the extreme helical and test? I’m currently running the TAC with the extreme helical and seem to be doing great!
Even just a regular helical. I have gotten much tighter groups with those than with offsets. I mean a football is really just an an extremely chubby arrow, but I'd never get it near the target without a spiral 🤷
What wraps are those really love the color way on them
Tac Driver 2.25 is where it's at!
I did the same test, but in a target face with a horizontal line how you should have done it. So you some fix point to aim at. And it was the exact opposite. The tac vanes always impacted higher than the blazer, the air or the hybrid.
Try the TAC 2.25. More similar profile than the 2.75. The 2.75 is more like the hybrid 26
In my tinkering I had same result tac vanes drop fly good but drop plus crazy tough to get them to stick and I tried all the tricks gave up on em
I think what it proves i Yu always need to tinker the sight for the arrows, 3.1, other vanes, 3 fps no matter, You can play with colours but have a pack of consistent arrows and adjust sight if new pack has even slight difference, specially vanes. I think form the differences the vanes size is the biggest one, than fps or weight.
Are they the same brand nock Dan? You will get some up and downs with different nocks because of the thickness
TAC vanes are definitely nice but like you mentioned, if you nic a vane, chances are it’s toast. Now, one thing I’ve found hard to get right is the amount of adhesive to use on TAC vanes to get full coverage. With AAE, I typically use 7 tiny dots. The other issue I find is you can’t get the radical helical out of the Driver 2.75’s as you can from AAE. Most likely because of the stiffer bases. I tinkered with Q2i, AAE, TAC, and Bohning for the past 4 months, 3 and 4 fletch, helical and offset, and from my findings a 3 fletch with a helical using the mini max works the best.
I've been using TAC 2.25 with Arizona e-z fletch mini max helical on a .246 and .204 diameter arrows. 204 diameter arrows I didn't have any issues, but the .246 I had to refletch most of them and used more glue the 2nd time around.
So I've been listening and rewinding and listening and rewinding and all that, but are the tact veins quieter than the AA events? Is that what I'm hearing the other people agree or disagree?
Are you using the same style nock. That could make your arrow impact different.
At the end of the day. Its what hits more consistently and has tighter groups etc. Better with broadheads. FPS doesnt matter really if the faster 1 isnt as accuracy. But saying that. Most have always said the higher the off set. The slower they will be at distance. Also maybe you had a clearance issue with the tacs. Making em hit low . Dunno.. good info tho.
Wonder if they fly the same through paper, tune could change trajectory a bunch.
tac vanes are extremely durable. I personally haven't had any issues with tearing or nicking or breaking that didn't involve not using enough glue or the wrong kind of glue
Definitely looks like one of the TAC’s is lower each time. Maybe # them and see if you just have one odd ball arrow hitting low.
I like the Hybrids a lot but they seem to get damaged way too easily.
Those tac vanes have more drag that’s why there hitting low and in my opinion that’s to much vane for a 4mm. With that much FOC and that much vane the front and back of the arrow are at war with each other
Im running .166/4mm VAP SS with 165 total up front and have 3 fletch Tac driver 2.25” on there and was almost considering it not being enough steering for fixed blades especially 3 blade solids…and adding a fletch or going 3 2.75” but i unfortunately dont have the ability to shoot much past 60 often
@@Orr_s I’ve found if your going to go short tall vanes you can run more point weight if you want longer vanes go less point weight. If tighten a 6” group at 60yards to a 2-3” group by taking off 30grains with long vane 2.5-3” vanes. But that’s my equipment
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I have tried tac vans also. They fly straight ,although drop. Also found that they are considerably louder than AAE. Sound turns into drag I'm guessing. Spooked the elk I shot at last year. 60 yard shoot and I missed ,elk jumped. Thinking he heard arrow flying
With how rogue some of those TAC arrows went check the cable guard roller wheels, I bet the vanes are clipping it. You'll probably see little lines on the wheel. It's the one thing I HATE about my Lift 33. If I try to shoot a vane with any height I have to run the cock vane at like 2 o'clock so that it doesn't hit. Bow tunes great, they just flubbed that part of the design in my opinion.
Tac absolutely way more durable then AAE I rarely tear up tac hitting with other arrows but but consistently do it with aae vanes no issues with accuracy with aae but definitely with durability
It’s just your nocks Dan. Switch the new ones with tac vanes to ip nocks and it fill not be low
I spoke to soon just saw you say that at the end of the vid
I’d like to see both with equal helical.
AAE for the win!
Don’t move people really need to mind their own business!!! They look really sharp though.
Looked like you were getting some fish tailing on all your shots. That might have been messing up the results.
I have seen higher offset maintaining speed down range at longer distances. Might be way you got the results you saw.
Calling you out, Dan. It is time to leave the rangefinder at home. Or are you scared of a Total Archery Challenge?
What is that chest rig that you are running?
It’s Marsupial Gear
Vanes dont cause lift. They give immediate drag. More helical more resitance. Unless youre shooting a giant 2 blade that much helical is pointless
I thought everyone just started using dca super/mini sabers
Vane design shouldn't impact flight characteristics and accuracy if your bow is properly tuned .
Not a fan of the TAC vanes. Very brittle living in WI shooting outside if it's cold they break easily!
ARIZONA EZ FLETCH MINI MAX just crushing it plane and simple. Ain't no-one do it better. Arizona mini max wakes up and pisses perfection. Ricky Bobby 😂
Please can you do a video on draw length
You’re moving the gym too?
Not really a fan of tac colors . Didn’t really find much difference in flight . Aae for me
I'm movin' to the country, I'm gonna eat a lot of peaches
You have more drag on the adams the vanes are larger.
What was the point of that video? AAEs may group better possibly or was it just an add for Adams archery? Wasted my time.
Archery Talk is a bunch of a Keyboard Karens now.
if anyone wants to get good at archery, stay away from archerytalk!!
Should just be used for the classifieds. Occasionally can get some good deals.
