thats a bummer about Off Season. I found it at a goodwill a couple years ago and its been sitting on my shelf collecting dust since haha, based on what you said I dont think I'll like it either. It'll probably stay where its at for a long while 🤣
I feel a little bad that quite a few people have now taken it off their TBR, but if just reading violence isn't their thing...then maybe I helped them.
“I don’t have that vampire eyesight” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 girl, neither do I! Hahah. Okay I never learned the premise to Flowers in the Attic until this review… shoving your kids in an attic while you’re trying to win back your dad is BONKERS 😮
I like your review of Flowers in the Attic. Thank you. I defend Twighlight for the same reasons you brought up. My 15-year-old cousin was really into it, and she was reading voraciously, so I figured a book that can do that can't be all that bad.
That’s the thing I thought was so weird about Off Season was the way women were written/talked about etc. It’s like hello y’all are being murdered but let’s take a moment to talk about b00bs. Lots of eye rolling. Summer of Night has been one I wanted to read for a while. I loved The Terror by him.
I actually just picked up the girl next door on my kindle because it was on sale and I am quite terrified to give it a read… I have yet to dive into any Jack Ketchum but hearing you talk about him has me on edge!
It is really dark, but I knew that going in...so I was maybe more prepared. I felt like there was a lot more character building in The girl next door too. It was based on a true story, which makes it that much more gutwrenching
Thank you for sharing the thoughts on the book Flower in the Attic ❤ I heard a really bad review on it and so I stepped away from it. I trust you though ❤ I will give it a try .
I can see how people wouldn't like this due to some themes in the book. Based on your liking other things that aren't for the faint of heart...I think you will be just fine. It is more soap opera-like than anything
I probably won't ever read a Ketchum or Laymon novel, tbh, because violence for the sake of it and SA in my horror just isn't my thing. Unless it's Sodergren type violence, which is just over the top and hilarious. My favorite read in August was Withered Hill by David Barnett. It's a folk horror coming out later this month.
Yes! Sodergren has nailed the perfect balance for me. This other stuff does nothing for me but turn me off of reading. I haven't heard of Withered HIll. I'll have to keep an eye out for that one!
Laymie just rolled over in his grave for the kind words. 🍑 I hope I can make the live show with you and Cliff. I have the same issue with audiobooks. I’m interested in reading more by Dan Simmons. Great review of Summer of Night! 👻
hahaa, my way of complimenting Laymon is to say "I disliked this book SO much that I can think of a Laymon book I liked more!" I def. need to read more Dan Simmons!
I'm hoping to get to The Forgotten Island before the live show. I haven't read any Jack Ketchum yet, but I have watched the movie adaptation of The Girl Next Door. Really tough to watch!
I felt like the girl next door at least had a story to go with it. The entire intro reads like a coming of age, and you have real feelings for the characters before anything starts. It as still hard to read, sure, but it didn't feel like violence just for shock value.
I'm kinda scared to read another Jack Ketchum book after The Girl Next Door lol idk what it was about that one but it felt a little snuffy if that makes sense? I feel like you were picking up a similar vibe with Off Season
This is even more snuffy. I thought Girl next door built up the characters and had more depth, though I know it is based on a true story. I don't think I will read more from him if they are all like this. Just not my thing
great to hear your thoughts on these books. Off Season is on my tbr and like you I don't like violence for the sake of it so I might not read that any time soon haha! Hope you have a good reading month in September too
I thought I would get more comments defending the book based on the reviews I've seen, but not one person has defended it. I need my violence to have a purpose or a deeper story to go with it. This wasn't it.
I had a friend in college lend me her copy of the entire 'flowers in the attic' series and insisted I read it. It was her all-time favorite series and she gushed about how amazing it was. After I read the second book I was like ..'girl, are you OK?' 😂
Love Flowers in the Attic and definitely more messed up than the film. I've heard of Off Season and seen people review but this was very in-depth; I'm not sure I'd like the book. The vampire eyesight comment, lol. Summer of Night kind of sounds like IT with vampires. I don't know if I had a favourite read for August, they were both pretty good.
I think most reviews of off season don't go in-depth because there is so little to talk about. This type of violence just isn't for me. Also, how long does it take for those vampire senses to kick in?
@@Kritz_Reads oh well Halloween is a year round thing for me so I don't have a time I start or end it hahaha The first day of fall for me is a celebration to half way to the sun starting to come back for longer again or the start of the countdown to darkness 😅

Dan Simmons books get wild! I felt the same about Summer of Night! Carrion Comfort is another wild one!!! You had an awesome reading month! 🎃🖤
I want to read that one and his winter one...the terror, I think? Some of the scenes in summer of night were just so perfect

That's how I feel about Sarah J Maas. Sometimes books are just trashy fun.

Right? I didn't get that at all when I read the girl next door. Not like that. I will def. have to read more Dan Simmons

Thanks for the info on Off Season. I got it from KU and had it about 2 months. Today I was trying to decide on it. I already returned it to KU! 🍁
Wish I hadn't bought an actual copy of it. 🤷♀️

@@Kritz_Reads Hhmm.
Depending on the actual dates in Off Season it could technically still be summer 😅 About two thirds of September is still summer.
Blasphemy! Everyone knows sept 1st is not only Autumn, but the first day of Halloween celebrations 😉

@@_Cinun_ I just had to make sure “spooky season” gets its time ! I agree, it is year round for me as well
