This is punk and heavy metal. It's suppose to sound stripped down and the distortion is on purpose. Stone Cold Crazy (live version) is another one that's different than what you've heard.
Queen dabbled into everything. This is a great song instrumentally and really addressed the punk phase of rock music. Drummer, Roger Taylor wrote this song for the album of the same name. Thank you for your reaction.

Queen’s third album, Sheer Heart Attack, was released in 1974 (includes Killer Queen, In the Lap Of the Gods, Stone Cold Crazy, etc., but this song was not on the album. Sheer Heart Attack, written by Roger, is featured on their sixth album, News of the World, released in 1977. Cheers!

Hearing SHEER HEART ATTACK for the first time, having the lyrics really helps the listener appreciate the novelty of it. Seeing it LIVE afterwards elevates to a whole new level.
