  • Ferdinand (von) Hiller (24 October 1811 - 11 May 1885) was a German composer, conductor, pianist, writer and music director. Was a student of Johann N. Hummel and was together with him at the deathbed of Beethoven. Was friends with all the famous composers and musicians of the time, like Mendelssohn, Schubert and he even got along with Wagner who tried to borrow 2,000 thaler from him.
Piano Concerto No. 2 in F# minor, Op. 69 (1843)
    1. Moderato, ma con energia e con fuoco
    2. Andante espressivo (6:56)
    3. Allegro con fuoco (12:50)
Michael Ponti and Radio Luxemburg Orchestra conducted by Louis de Froment
The Piano Concerto No 2 in F sharp minor Op 69 is considered to be Hiller’s most successful contribution to the genre. The work, which is dedicated to Wilhelmin Szarvady, was composed around the time Hiller moved from Frankfurt to Leipzig in the autumn of 1843. Despite the lack of rehearsal time, the premiere in the Gewandhaus on 26 October 1843 was a success. In this concerto Hiller clearly moved away from the Parisian virtuoso style: compared to his earlier concerto Op 5 this work finds a different solution to the ‘concerto problem’. All three movements are, in their form and development, conceived in a much more multi-layered manner, with piano and orchestra dovetailing more frequently.

    Ottimo inserimento.

I've stopped dismissing Romantic era music by the unfamous . All of us have vitality and it's worth checking out what people in all time periods have to add . One realizes one day there are many pianists besides Hofmann and Horowitz and many say things in music you will like more than the famous . there are many Kreislerianas and FuneralMarch sonatas out there .Don't get stuck ! this is a worthwhile listen . Hiller knew everyone so I have come across his name often. so glad i found out what one of his pieces sounds like !

This concerto WAS standard repertoire up until the Rachmaninoff concertos slowly began knocking out everything around it. So standard that it was published for a century by G Schirmer Inc before being deleted circa the 40's. I once heard Craig Sheppard play this with the Debut Orchestra of LA under Michael Tilson Thomas many moons ago. He did a fabulous job on it. Now heard mostly in Ponti's legendary LP from the 60's. I blush to say I was heavily influenced by this when I wrote my Piano Concerto No 1 in F-sharp Minor Op 1 (here on RUclips) I have so much admiration for its boldness, it's brevity and it's ability to pack such a punch in 17 short minutes. Liszt hadn't written his No. 1 yet. Only Mendelssohn had a similar structure in his G Minor Concerto from which Hiller probably borrowed.

Compact, concise and to the point. But enjoyable. Great piano writing I thought.

What's the 'concerto problem'? Never heard of it before :D

    • @leonelbat
      @leonelbat 4 года назад +3

This is related to the treatment of form, harmony and orchestration. There may be problems with any type of composition that is not necessarily necessary for a concert. A composition problem is related to the different formal, harmonic and orchestration paths that can be used.

The concerto is professional composers work of Beethoven-like style, but it doesn't have a distinctly memorable melody enough ...

Wagner seemed to love borrowing money from people. I wonder if he was as generous a lender after he made it big.

Wagner was a horrible person. He was a master at using people, even Jews if necessary, while later denouncing them as a threat to the purity of the German race. Wagner exemplifies a transition from an anti-Semitism centered in religion to one centered in race: “a religion may be changed or shed. . . . [A]n ethnicity, however, is essential, immutable, and (to use a favorite 19th-century word) ‘organic.’”

To be honest I found #1 more advanced because it sounds like Brahms.... before Brahms (obviously Brahms concertos are superior but Hiller #1 is very good and vigorous). Agree that Hiller #2 is better than #1 but paradoxically #1 appears more modern in language whereas #2 is still aling Mendelssohnian route, yet with better development than #1.
However movement #3 of concerto #2 is again.... Brahms before Brahms who was 10 years old at time).

It sounds influenced by Mendelssohn and Schumann, with it's own unique traits. It feels like it leans more more towards Saint Saens than Brahms in it's overall presentation.
