The thing is with this band, there are no inflated egos. Floor will sing backing for Marko, Emppu the guitarist will sit back and let Troy wail away. Tuomas the composer on the keys will sit back and play under all of the other instruments an entire song. Such a refreshing change form the usual ego fueled drama queens.

This is probably their most “poppy” song - Romanticide is heavier, and you also get to hear Marco (the bassist) sing :D
PS: The backing vocals you heard here (and in other songs), are prerecorded by a professional choir.
Dragging a giant choir on a world tour would be a logistical nightmare and cost $$$$ :)

It's getting even wilder. You're in America reacting to a Finnish (not Swedish) band with a Dutch vocalist (but who lives in Sweden and is married to the drummer of Swedish metal band Sabaton) and a British member playing in Germany. Floor is Dutch (BTW, the pronunciation is just like "floor;" no flure or fleur required; the name means "flower", think Spanish flor), and Troy, the Brit, you haven't seen yet (plays Irish bagpipes, whistles, bouzouki, guitar, and occasionally sings). BTW, there are Nightwish Army members from as far afield as Namibia (Grüße nach Namibia!). They're also very popular in Latin America, and Floor has sung in her career in English, Dutch, German, Spanish, Finnish, Italian, and Latin. It's a multicultural world...

Don't forget that she also speaks Swedish and has sung in Swedish as well, so to date we're at eight languages and counting. To the SCASE dudes, if you have yet to meet a vocalist that can go from death metal growls to opera (sometimes within the span of one note), well you just have met one.

You recognize the true musicians by the fact that are better live then on record...
The first singer Tarja, was great but always sang in operatic style. The second singer Anette, was a great singer but her voice was thinner and more pop orientated. Floor Jansen can sing everything she wants in every style she wants. She even growls.

This is just Nightwish cruising along. Anything from this show, Tampere 2015, Wembley 2015, Buenos Aires 2018 are pure gold. Nightwish is always best live. I would suggest Romanticide for a bit heavier Nightwish. Floor Jansen is one of the most versatile, skilled and powerful singers in the world. Nightwish Army Portugal here....

Ever Dream from Wacken 2013 & Shudder Before the Beautiful from Wembly
Fun fact: observe her command of that crowd, then realize that it's about 82,000 people at an annual metal music festival (NOT an exclusively Nightwish concert), so they're not all there to just see Nightwish...and yet she has them rocking out in the palm of her hand. I personally haven't seen that much crowd control since the late great Freddie Mercury. Floor is the Valkyrie Queen.
The name is Floor Jansen (Yahn-sen) the Dutch queen of symphonic metal. Nightwish loves what they do and ae so happy to have Floor as their new singer. On record this was part of the backing track, however Floor wanted to sing this part live. Because she can! Those chills you got are what we Nightwish fans call a "Floorgasm"! Correction men, you are watching a Finnish band with a Dutch singer performing in Germany. Even better. Follow what Gabriel gave you for suggestions. You can't go wrong with anything from Wacken 2013. For something a little heavier try "Romanticide" or for something more Epic, check out "Ghost Love Score" both from this same show. Great reaction my Utahn friends. You will soon discover that Marko (the Viking) is also a very good singer. So much more amazing music and performances to come on this epic journey down the NIghtwish rabbit hole. Jinjer (Tatiana) has an amazing growl and a very good voice, but NIghtwish has Floor and Marco, two of the best (if not THE BEST) vocalists in rock music. Just subbed for the ride. Floor wasn't even the permanent singer at this time, she was still filling in. I think the band asked her to make it permanent after the Buenos Aries show. Between you and me I don't think they had much choice seeing as the crowd was chanting her name.

I'm a mere private in the Nightwish Army. Started listening on and off around the time they transitioned to their second singer. Loved the music. Drifted away, though. Then about 18 months ago I saw Ghost Love Score from this same concert on a reaction video. Hooked. Instantly. I now watch NW (and other Floor Jansen) videos every single day, often for more than 2 hours, on and off. Some advice from a newbie turning fanatic: (1) Learn band member names as quickly as you can (first names especially as some of the last names are a little tough); (2) when you get a comment telling you to watch the rest of the Wacken show in a certain order (Likely from Gabriel), follow that list (every reactor I've seen who did so has specifically said they were enormously happy they followed the sequence); (3) do what you can to get caught up because individuals from the band are expanding outside the band, the latest album is huge and the follow-on tour will be atomic. We got you, brothers. Welcome. This is the legendary ride of a lifetime.

The Highwayman on drums (2013) = Finn Jukka (Yoo-kuh) - first drummer (since moved to management for health reasons)
The Viking on bass = Finn Marco - replacement bassist and frequent metal-virtuoso vocalist
The Conqueror Queen = Dutch Floor (Flor) - third front-person with eyes like a wolf, mouth like a lioness, scream of an eagle and heart made of glory

The band is from Finland.
That bridge section where Floor sings along with the choir backing track was originally just a backing track (even on the studio version) because it was outside the range of the previous singer. That is one of many examples of how she has raised the overall quality of the band. She's turned out to be the missing piece that they (everyone but Tuomas) didn't really realize was missing until the timing finally worked out. Apparently Tuomas wanted her after they let Tarja go but Floor was happy with her band at the time. Having said that, both of the prior singers were excellent and deserve recognition for their contributions. You'll get tons of suggestions but for me the best place to start is anything else from the Wachen 2013 show.
Floor was definitely a missing piece.........but Floor AND Troy together were the missing pieces.........Floor made Nightwish phenomenal.......Troy made Nightwish

That's more or less what I meant........I'm sure you would agree with me that no matter when Troy started with Nightwish he definitely made that band pretty complete......👍
I read that in an interview with Marko. He said she and her band mates were all close friends and the band was starting to take off, so they didn't have the heart to ask her to break all that up. It really shows the kind of people they are. They put Floor and her needs before what was best for them.

It's funny that you think this is their anthem. This is actually one of their more conventional songs. Oh you have no idea how deep this rabbit hole goes.
You can watch just about anything from their Wacken 2013 performance and be just as blown away. I recommend 'Ever Dream' and 'Song of Myself'. Then try 'Ghost Love Score', 'Romanticide', and 'Ghost River'. Hell then just finish the whole show.
Their great epics are 'The Poet and the Pendulum' (Wembley 2015), and 'The Greatest Show on Earth' (Wembley or Tampere 2015)... But you're not ready.

I love how impressed you were by Floor's windmilling. Personally I'm convinced we could solve the world's energy problem if we could bottle the energy of her windmills. If you want to see someone else go all in watch Tuomas, the keyboardist, on some of their songs. That man bangs so hard I don't know how he can play at the same time.
Every single song from that Wacken 2013 show was perfect.
I saw Nightwish in 2017 and it is still the best show I've ever been to. You can literally pick any song from that Wacken 2013 concert and it is just as good if not better than this. I think Ghost Love Score(from the same show) should be your next song though. Good reaction too!

(Other great song to see IMO Romanticide, Floor Jansen & Henk Poort - Phantom Of The Opera | Beste Zangers 2019, Floor Jansen - Puccini, and my favorite Weak Fantasy! 82,000 people at this concert and hands down one of the best stages performances ever imo.

It is interesting that the perhaps most important person of the band, Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, who writes their music and outstanding lyrics, is the least visible. Floor is a beast, plain and simple ! Standing way over six feet tall with heels on makes her a bona fide sword maiden. It is really wort paying attention to the lyrics.
Referring to the "add something to the live version" comment, that's exactly what she did with their Ghost Love Score at Wacken 2013 (one of their best performances, hands-down). GLS wasn't originally done that way, even live with the first singer, Tarja, but when Floor performed it she added her own thing at the end of the song (referred to as The Floorgasm) and it stuck. Now that vocal part is in demand by fans for every live performance of GLS since, and it cemented her position with the band and the fans as the Valkyrie Queen of Nightwish.

The drummer, Jukka, is a beast. One of the hardest hitting guys in metal.
Sadly, after this tour he was struck down with chronic insomnia and couldn't continue to play with the band. He turned the reins over to his friend Kai Hahto, who has been playing with them ever since.
But Jukka continues to work with the band in a business capacity. He has always been band's accountant.
Enjoyed the enthusiasm and the commentary. Every Nightwish song with Floor is an absolute winner. For this concert, Floor had been with the band for 10 months. They’re all smiling because Nightwish now has the perfect ensemble and they all know it. World-class composer, musicians and singer all in one band. Every song is different with surprises galore hidden within. If you want to stay heavy then try Romanticide from the same Wacken 2013 concert. 😄🤘

This band is from Finland.
Tuomas is the keyboarder, Songwriter, composer.
Marco is playing the bass and doing also the vocals. He is very versatile and an awesome singer as well. You might watch „The Islander“ from Tampere to experience this.
Emppu is playing the guitar. He can shred it but he always does exactly that much, that is required by the song.
Kai (also Wintersun) is now at the drums and replaced the original drummer Jukka (whom you saw here) who had stop playing the drums due to health issues. But he still is with the band. Julka was a perfect drummer and showman, Kai is a perfect drummer and a machine and beast at the drums.
Then there is Troy, a multi instrumentalist from England who in older performances supported the band at some tracks but became luckily a full member of the band after this tour. He‘s a great singer as well.
Last but not least there is Floor, the Dutch singer. She is the bands third singer after Tarja (operatic) and Annett from Sweden (pop/rock). She can sing really everything from opera over pop/ rock to growls
This gig was at Wacken. Wacken is THE metal festival worldwide. Nightwish were one of the headliners in 2013.
It is in the north of Germany in a rural area. Therefore the bullhead with flames is the Wacken symbol. There are more than 80.000 metalheads having a big party each year.
Here are some suggestions for your next stops:
-> Ghost Love Score (Wacken 2013): THE "traditional first song" to get into Nightwish. Floor is showing diferent capabilities and you can get a first understanding of Tuomas capability of songwriting
-> There are only great songs from Wacken: „Story Time“, as you just experinced, and "Ever Dream" are catchy in a very positive way. "Song of Myself" starts catchy and ends with everyone headbanging. "Romanticide", "Last Ride of the Day" and "Ghostriver" are the heavier ones.
-> "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" (Buenos Aires) will give you a metal and power blast: Maximum speed and Marco (the singing bass player) becomes Hannibal Lecter ;-)
-> "Yours an Empty Hope" from Wembley (have a good look!! at the growls. You'll be surprised.)
-> „Dead Boys Poem“ from Buenos Aires (so amazing and emotional)
-> „Weak Fantasy“ (Tampere): Kai the beastat the drums, Troy joins in, great duets with Floor and Marco, …
-> Elvenjig / Elvenpath (Buenos Aires): Awesome intro and it continues on that level
-> "The greatest Show on Earth" (Tampere) is one of the two most epic songs. The title is not about the gig, but about the topic of the song: The evolution of mankind.
-> "The Poet and the Pendulum“ (Wembley) is my personal absolute masterpiece of Nightwish. Be sure to know the background of this song ahead (short version see below *)

From the new album there are for obvious reasons no live sessions so far. For all songs there are lyric videos, except for „Noise". But maybe you'll give some songs a try as well. It's an awesome album. Definitely not an "easy" one with a lot of really unique songs, different from what is "typical" for Nightwish. Floor said that she was really challenged to sing the songs that Tuomas wrote for her. Knowing her abilities, you can imagine that they are "special“. It‘s a good idea to hear the album in the given order, but nevertheless here are some of my options to some of the songs.
-->"Noise" is probably the most "typical" song and the only one with "real video". The video is great as the song itself
--> "Tribal" is the heaviest one and Kai, the drummer, had to change his normal setup to be able to play it.
--> "Shoemaker" (about Eugene Shoemaker) is such a heavenly and epic song with the possible epic ending.
-> „Pan“ is just an amazing ride. When it starts you for a moment think you‘re listening to Floors husbands band „Sabaton“. In the song you‘ll be reminded to „Tribal“ and „Noise“.
-> Procession“ a rather calm song with so amazing vocals by Floor
--> "Harvest" is so different with Troy singing, that you will wonder if you're listening to Nightwish.
-> „Endlessness“ is Marcos song and shows his great voice.
--> "Music", „How's the Heart", ... are really cool songs as well. Of course.
The album challenged Floor as singer, which is not easy to do, as she is one of the best and most versatile singers in the world.

Beste Zangers Just in case (which I can really recommend) you're going to do "Beste Zangers" make sure you take the clips posted by "jenniezelf" on RUclips as she has also included the talking / interviews before and after with english subtitles. The concept of the show is, that on one day all singers sing a song for one of them.
It's a song that is by that singer or a song that means a lot for him / her. So it is very interesting to get to know the story behind each song. And it will help to understand the reactions of the other singers. Floor is singing there in German, Dutch, Spanis and English. Her "Phanom of the Opera" duet with Henk Poort is legendary.

* Backstory for „Poet and the Pendulum“
Tuomas (the keyboarder and songwriter) was in depression after the split from their first singer Tarja. He was in the position to either commit suicide in real real life or to write a song about it and die within that song. Luckily he choose the latter option. He is the poet, "killed" by the pendulum. And afterwards there is darkness, silence and just a fading heartbeat. It gives me a shiver every time.
As this song is so emotional for him all the others have an eye on him. He even had his the vocals turned off in his in ears.
One detail showing the ingenuity of Tuoams: Exactly three minutes after the words "Now I have only three minutes and counting" he is "killed" by the pendulum. And then everything becomes dark and there is just this fading heartbeat of the dying poet.

From what I have heard, her husband/manager was (from the bands point of view) the core of the problem. There is one song addressing him: "Master Passion Greed"
They never played it live and will never do so. It is maybe their heaviest song, but for sure the most angry one. You should definitely listen to it.

The goosebumps are called Floorgasms. Tuomas basically the band leader has said in an interview that he doesn't want any more member changes. In another interview, he said "Floor is home". By the way, they use a backing track with an orchestra and choir just like they used on the albums. FINNISH BAND WITH A DUTCH SINGER AND ONE MEMBER WHO IS ENGLISH.
"I am the empty crib of Peter Pan" remains one of their hardest and most evocative lyrics.

Everybody loves Floor! They had one concert when floor started in the band where only 2-3 people wanted refunds for their tickets out of thousands of people. And those few people clearly were just salty about the old singer being gone. But their fan base loves the whole band and not just the vocalist. Which is extremely important for the bands success. Floor has had her dream come true joining Nightwish and the band welcomed her with open arms and made her feel like she was home

With Nightwish you cant really go wrong. All their songs are fantastic. But "Ghost Love Score", "Everdream", "Romanticide", "Ghost River", "The Greatest show on earth", "Yours is and Empty Hope" and check out Tarja with "Phantom of the Opera" would be a perfect start. Awesome reactions, cant wait to watch more from you guys!

The entire Nightwish set at Wacken 2013 is DOPE! You will add a LOT of subscribers and "Likes" if you just start at the beginning of this concert (Wacken 2013) and work your way through the entire Nightwish set one song at a time. You WILL be blown away. "Ghost Love Score" from this set is epic and awesome. "Romanticide" is a rocker (Marco, the "viking" bassist, sings on that one and he is incredible). "Ever Dream" "Song of Myself" Basically every song.
Nightwish is at their best live. As you have found out. Their albums are just teasers for live performances. You should really treat yourself to the whole concert. It's legendary.

When this was recorded it was almost to the day 10 months since Floor did her first concert with Nightwish as their replacement singer after their second singer got fired in the middle of their world tour. When she arrived in the US she had 48 hours to learn the setlist before her first show. There's a documentary about that time here on RUclips "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours" Officially Floor and Troy became full members a few months later, inofficially they where asked in July. (this was recorded on August 3:d in front of 82000 people at Wacken (pronounced Vacken) open air in Germany
There are no words to describe this band, this singer, because prior to them there was never any need for such words. The grace, the beauty, the power of Floor is simply beyond words. Coupled with the musical genius of Tuomas and the musicality of Marco, Emppu and Jukka they create (fill in jaw dropping sound)

Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing in 2013 at Wacken Open Air festival, in front of a 82k+ audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra, London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first couple of Nightwish reactions, it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
"Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

The band is from Finland. Floor is Dutch but lives with her husband and little girl in Sweden.
