Chapter 1 teaches you to not be greedy; greed can easily ruin everything you built in life.
Chapter 2 teaches you to be discerning; good and evil are not only relative but also depend on the point of view.
Chapter 3 teaches you to let go of obsession; it drove many good people mad or worse.
Chapter 4 teaches you to treasure your time with loved ones; sometimes people cross paths and never meet again.
Chapter 5 teaches you to accept that there is often no correct decision; such is life.
Chapter 6 give you two choices; to not learn the lessons and repeat the cycle of life's struggles, or rise above it all to achieve enlightenment(or at least carry on with the journey).
Actually there's an overarching plot of conspiracy between the taoist deities and buddhas; much of the story references life of Chairman Mao Zedong, but that requires more reading(reading and understanding journal entries can make it a different story) And the whole thing gets a bit like MGS2, where you're set on a destined path to be conditioned into the next wukong(or not) and you're not necessarily with the "good guys". At the end, Erlang tests the destined one and players in how they deal with others/enemies; GSBS tests the destined one and players how they deal with themselves(and their own abilities), teach it to the destined one/player if he has to. Only then does the player/destined one have the opportunity to take up the mantle of DaSheng, without the circlet.
I feel like chapter 3 is more about vindication. How far are you willing to go to prove a point, even at the expense of others?
This game is PURE ART. Too bad i cant get into playing other games now until the DLC comes out😢
You're the streamer who reflects the most from the game. Thank you for sharing your insightful thoughts!
I appreciate that!
Speaking as a Chinese person a good thing about Wukong is that its interpretation of the Buddhist/Taoist thinkings is a modern one, and a very critical one as well. It's not just Chinese mythos but also, what the new generation think of it, rather than just blindly reciting everything. You know, the "It's our ancestor's great wisdom and if you question it, you don't understand it" kind, no, the game questions those ideals all the time. The deeper you look the more you'll feel it, it doesn't glorify those ideals, but it's not outright objection either, In a society that still values conformity over a lot of things, this really is a breath of fresh air.
For the true ending
1. The old monkey is gaslighting you all the way, the ring cloth on his back is a dead give away that he's a god from the celectial court.
2. The old monkey telling you the sixth relic is lost, wukong is gone because under true ending he doesnt know Erlang who hide the sixth relic (with Wukong's memory) has already given you the sixth relic back.
3. Only until the last second does the old monkey realise you have recovered the sixth relic that Wukong is back and regaining his memory therefore will no longer accept the headband.
4. Ending cinematic is Wukong regaining his memoery of Journey to the West in reverse ording with last scene Wukong back to where he started finally free.
likely guanyin because he hesitated a little before placing the circlet on The Destined One.
Also explains why Red Child is in CH5, because Guanyin was busy being the old monkey.
He's def a celestial court god or has the backing of them.
Some say the old monkey is actually the Buddha himself disguising as the old monkey
@@Dumb-CommentOne of the more popular theories online in China is that the old monkey is Wukong's master Jinchanzi(tangsanzang).because there is a paragraph on the old monkey's shadow God diagram: "He said that he did not gamble and did not lose."It just corresponds to the conversation between Jinchanzi and Yellow Brow. Once again, Tang Sanzang also had a Buddha position after Journey to the West. His approach is just the opposite of Huang Mei, not to manipulate the protagonist for the result, but to wait for an heir who can truly understand Goku's behavior and inherit. That's why in the fake ending he sighs before putting a gold hoop on the main character. Without the awakening of the meaning root, it cannot be a true oneness, so gold hoops are needed instead.
Since my English is very poor, I can only translate through the translation software. I'm sorry if there are any mistakes
The baritone singer (Yang Hongji, 83 yrs old) of this song "Where lies the path ahead" is the original singer of the theme song for another TV series "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" back in the 90s, which is another ancient Chinese novel along with "Journey to the West". I immediately burst into tears when I first hear his voice came out from this song.
It's kind of crazy, I bought the game for gameplay and story, but fell in love with it because of the music. From what I understand, the CEO of Game Science wrote the lyrics to almost all of the main songs, and even incorporated elements of historical Chinese poetry in them.
the translation doesn't fully deliver the meanings 'cause there are too many ancient poetries, allusions and ancient classical Chinese.😂
CEO Feng Ji also wrote the main story line and most poems. He was addicted to WoW when he completed his bachelor's degree of Bio-chemistry. So he decide to engage in gaming industry after his graduation. So basically this is a game made purely by gamers.
He also translated the lyrics, it's crazy.
This is by far the most comprehensive and insightful review I have seen. You revealed the messages and the philosophy that Game Science built into this game. They took risks of making a game that is so heavily packed with cultural connotations embedded in the 16th-century novel, in a hope of presenting to the world, not just a game, but a story for people to enjoy, taste and connect with. Their efforts paid off because of people like you, who are willing to go beyond the fighting scenes. Thank you! I really enjoyed your review.
I watched and rewatched your reactions, especially to the song "Where Lies the Path Ahead". Seeing the English translation of the lyrics made me rediscover the meaning of this song, which I had known since childhood but had taken for granted for a long time and hadn’t thought about since I grew up. It hit me so hard this time, man…
Grand lands and lakes witnessed our scars
Lightnings and rains only strengthened our art
We've kept our words from the start, from the start
...
What an amazing song and lyrics and translation, omg!
Now wukong will continue to be the childhood of a whole new generation
There is an old saying in China:“没有比脚更长的路,没有比人更高的山”. And it can be translate as:
'There are no paths longer than one's feet, nor mountains taller than human's will.'
or
'There are no paths too long for one's feet to traverse, nor mountains too tall for human perseverance to scale.'
post game sadness kicks in
Black myth is so good that it goes "I don't know who and what, im crying nonetheless"
Just like a great movie which no audience wants to leave chair at all. The loss or unwillingness from the end of a good story is just that remarkable to remember.
This is a bit like philosophy stuff, some things once you figure it out (or know/understand) on your own, you can never go back. As the old monkey said, life is a one-way journey.
I had the exact same feeling at the end. I can't remember the last time I felt like this after a game. It's a very complicated mixed feeling.
Best wishes from China, and I'll be joining Blackmyth Wukong concert in a week😊
Damn I envy that, I cant get the ticket.
The game also follows Wu Cheng'en's original jab at Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism, during a time when the Ming emperors cared more about partying, pursuing Daoist practices for immortality, and maintaining the rigid hierarchy of Confucianism that ignored the hardships of commoners. The Jade Emperor and his celestial court represent Confucianism, prioritizing absolute order above everything else and oppressing anything they deem a threat to their power, such as Wukong and the yaoguai in general. The evil Daoists and the crane that kidnapped the 4th Sister are selfish Daoist practitioners who only care about their own cultivation. Lingji Bodhisattva, Yellowbrow, and Jinchi are hypocritical Buddhists, each embodying a twisted interpretation of Buddhist beliefs.
Of course, we do have good examples like Erlang, Maitreya and the Old Man that upgrade your gourd to +10, for each religion respectively.
You're thinking of Legalism rather than Confucianism.
Daoist is broadly interventionist and Buddhist is broadly non-interventionist. That's the only difference in regards to this game; they're different sides of same coin, the good ones are the minority. The crane can also be interpreted as someone who isn't quite a bad guy.
Legalism is more about the structure and enactment. This is more about the ancient confucism (pre Wang Yangming's philosophy) that everyone has their own role and fate and no one should go beyond those. Wukong was oppressed so he would stay in his place and rebel against fate itself.
Daoists are mostly selfish. Almost we saw a lot of villain daoists, they are actually the least evil in this game and even in the original JttW novel, as they mostly care about themselves and not the bigger scope.
You do need to understand that this is mythology we are talking here, which ultimately is a collection of folktales and fictions passed down generations. Take Journey to the West as example, it is essentially a fictional novel with decades of folktales and stories and operas collected in 100 chapters. I say this because we need to understand the difference between fiction and reality, which religion beliefs and faith manifest in. For example, in the game/novel Victorious Fighting Buddha is a title granted by the Buddha to Wukong after successful completion of the Journey. However, Buddhahood in the actual Buddhism teachings is rather a State of Mind or ultimate phase that only oneself is able to attain through cultivation; it is not a title nor can be granted by another. Another example, more straightforwardly speaking, you see the Gods and Buddha helping Wukong to subdue all kinds of Yaoguais, but you won't see that in reality Guanyin/Goddess of Mercy or Erlang showing up to catch criminals.
What an incredible experience this game was. I thought your discussion on experiencing different cultures was very interesting. I'm from Russia but live in the states and am a little disappointed with how little our arts are recognized over here. We're always portrayed as war lords or gangsters in Western media. I'm familiar with Hong Kong cinema like their action movies and Wong Kar Wai but this was my first experience with their mythology and Journey To The West and I absolutely loved it.
The final song played during the cast is talking about people only knows the bright side of the story/history(such as journey to the west). Yet the person in the story also has emotions like sad, frustrated and desperate. Beautification can lead people to overlook the bitterness involved. And the last sentence can be roughly translated like"May I ask who can break the stubborn void again, Non falling into Reincarnation and start a new era,"
The final song reminds many people of a man who is long gone yet never truly died in people's hearts.
The story of Journey to the West has always been like this: the deeper you immerse yourself in it, the more reflections it provides.
The words you used to articulate the music pieces are so powerful, so right for the moment, so deeply reflective of the game and life experiences, that gave me goosebumps and tears throughout the music part of the video. Thank you for that.
Thanks for listening
休息一下,过一段时间再试试二周目也不错。距离产生美
Fun Fact:"Celestial Symphony" and "Where Lies the Path Ahead" are the opening and ending themes of the 1986 version of "Journey to the West". Actually, the "Where Lies the Path Ahead" was first made, then TV series producer ask the composer to create opening theme, the composer used the short opening section of "Where Lies the Path Ahead" to expand and complete the composition of "Celestial Symphony".
Congrats on finishing the base game! You are completely right that even though the game has so many references to the novel, people with minimal knowledge of it can still enjoy and take something away from it on top of a great gameplay. Personally I think that’s why they chose to put very little words in the animations. It’s to have people think and feel for themselves.
Hope you enjoy NG+! It’s fun!
I'm sorry I missed your live stream of the final level with Wukong, as I was a bit busy that day. I just finished watching the recording, and I was truly amazed by your interpretation of the theme song Where Lies the Path Ahead! To be honest, as a Chinese person, I've heard this song so many times that I skipped over it... But now I find that a foreigner has interpreted it so deeply and accurately, giving me a whole new understanding of the song. Thank you, Macro! Also, your interpretation was excerpted and reposted on Bilibili, and it received a great response! I share a comment from a viewer here: "Wow, truly impressive. I'm amazed at how, as a foreigner, he can understand it so profoundly. Culture really is universal!"
Bad ending music : Where Lies the Path Ahead? (As the ending theme song of the TV drama "Journey to the West", it was created in 1986)
Singer1 : 杨洪基(83 years old, A well-known musician)
Singer2 : 杨恩硕(The official behind the scenes video appears to be a little boy under the age of 10)
I feel blessed to have played a game like Wukong, the music, the anime, and your reviews are such a great way to close the whole experience
26:06 everything is worth it, the joy of winning! Congrats🎉🎉🎉
such a great journey! thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@MarcoMeatballDetached from Rise and Fall is Erlang full battle theme in 3 phases, hope you react it again 😢
The translation for these songs generally takes a less literal approach, even in a way that they probably be sung in English, which I think is very reasonable. Although, the line for “We’ve kept our words from the start, from the start” I would have preferred it to be translated a bit more literally here. The original in Chinese is closer to “We’ve sung magnanimously all the way to the edge of the world” which shows both the spirit as well as the journey itself. This rendition is really incredible. I feel like it shows a profundity within the lyrics that I didn’t know was there when I was a kid watching the TV show. I’m really happy that the artistic quality of this game allows people who are separate in so many different ways all at once to share a meaningful experience. At least I would like to think that people that reupload RUclipsr’s reactions to this game on Bilibili want to show that something that’s practically a folktale to them (it’s not like the majority of the Chinese actually read the original version of the book, most people don’t read after all😂) can touch so many people in the West as well.
The first song played was the game's version of the ending theme of the 1986 tv show
Where the path lies ahead is so good, I cried when listening to that.
You're the streamer who knows little to nothing about JttW and YET also analyzed the most of what the game has to offer and express, no matter in literature or aesthetic form, with much appreciation and respect with your professionality. Ty for playing through the game for us, been following you since your stunned reaction from signora boss theme :D Keep up the good vibes dude!
Sorry for bad English, love from Taiwan
😭😭😭😭😭😭
I find myself ruminating about the scene on the boat. And I could not help to think it in the frame of Freudian psychology of the id, ego and superego, where the Destined One is the ego listening its id (bajie)and its superego (old monkey) converse with each other about the legacy of Sun Wukong (the person the Destined One aspired to become). The most telling part is when they see another boat with the all there of them, and the old monkey hinted us that the 3 of us are the mind..The whole conversation begins with Bajie asking “are we going to die” and old monkey telling us “death is an inevitability, the journey is what matters” (paraphrasing where). And the conversation end with bajie telling us that we can always run away, and Old Monkey telling us that this fight is ours alone to fight. I find it quite poetic.
Fun fact: 54:41 ''Where lies the path ahead'' is the ending theme of 1986 journey to the west TV series

You have the most authentic and beautiful smile when you are moved by the story and music ❤
🙏🙏🙏
For players who don't speak Chinese, you can set the audio settings for the language you are familiar with when you first play this game. However, after you enter a new cycle, I highly recommend that you adjust the audio settings to Chinese and keep the subtitles in the language you are familiar with. It will completely level up your experience and help you become more immersed in the story. The Chinese voice acting in this game is way way much better than in other languages. Especially the Chinese dubbing of 猪八戒(BaJie,the pig uncle)you first meet on the Turtle Island in Chapter 3.
The thing about genshin/gacha community is that everything from there is slowing turning into toxicity. Doesnt matter what u do u will always received negative respond. So its not your fault but the community itself, just dont let it get into your head too much. You are doing just fine.
:)
knew u form chinese website, learn a lot form ur video. i had similar feelings when i played this game, and thank u for speaking it out on my behalf.
thank u Mr.Marco Meatball. luv form CN. when i can earn enough money , i will support to u.
So beautiful, so lovely, I cried so much😢😢😢
Fun fact: the CEO of Game Science, Feng Ji, is the author of the lyrics of all songs in the game except for those from the 1986 TV show, and he was a biology major.
46:00 Marco’s insight…
“… it allows you to go on a trip, where you can experience new things, and emerge the other side hopefully with your life perspective a little different…”
46:11”… and this is the problem… in a society that values consumerism, values money, values spending… what we lose… is the overwhelming sense that, like life is actually way bigger than just playing something on a controller in a video game and then moving on to the next thing…”
Yes, I got emotional at the end of the game. I got teary. It is beyond the game as we know, it is a work of art!
anyone who likes these ending cutscene songs should definitely also see the lyrics. especially the lyrics of "destiny" and "unfinished" hit me so hard.
Your analysis about the game, about the value, symbolism, the art, morality and everything else you have said, was beautiful and insightful and you're right about the west, the people in the west has forgotten about what makes things valuable to the small things on the long terms, everyone all cares about the profits of short term happiness rather than to learn good morals, as you said (sorry if I butchered it) "when you're in your journey you can never go back to the same way you were once", I really love and appreciate your analysis and your thoughts about it, people of the gaming industry has forgotten about what makes games fun, artistic and having good morals, see you in the DLC of the game Mr Marco, GOTY for the win 😎🏆🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
love your reaction
love from China 希望dlc出来之后还能看到你的新反应~
Marco,I have to recommend the film “Havoc in Heaven"(1965)for you, it's a early age cartoon about Wukong, the music in it is very remarkable with traditional Chinese instruments. You will find it interesting!
When they first trailer was showed a few years back, i and probably alot of other people were expecting good graphics and just ok~ish everything else.
But the combat ended up really good, the bosses are numerous, the story was deep, the art direction was top class and the music was insane, chapter 5 and 6 ending songs have so much meaning behind them, its actually crazy.
The last time a game made me think about the questions of life, good and evil and the universe was the original nier waaaay back, with their bad ps3 graphics and all.
I'm glad you enjoyed the entire Journey. Although Eastern and Western cultures are diverse, I feel that their core essence is interconnected.
The feeling of this game musics, to me, It is fantastic!
This TV series was filmed 38 years ago. I have watched it 20 times. The Chinese have the spirit to resist the rulers. People all over the world should be like Wukong, have the spirit to resist the rulers and continue to move forward on the road of pursuing equality. This is the soul of Journey to the West.
Well, Italians may be the European who are most similar to Chinese.
I think Journey to the West is the top one in 4 top books of China history. .... like 5000 years history of China has 10 thousands books tho.
5000 years history of China has 10 thousands books ? NO... just 《The Si Ku Quan Shu》,it contains 79 thousands books.
You know, the English version listen not The lyrics are specially written and rhyme, so you can actually sing them.I really look forward to your cover!
Ps
Do you know that in bilibili We can see your game video. Our evaluation of you is “有慧根”It means that you have wisdom and can understand those profound and complicated feelings and truths. This is what other foreign RUclipsr can't get.Of course they can feel that emotion, but they can't understand what is that and why.Except you.
And we all know that you are an opera singer, so we think that music education gives you unique understanding ability.
Good job,meatball.
Love form China.
he learned Buddhism and meditation before, kind of familiar to eastern philosophy. so he can get it easier
You are incredible! Feeling the music
Info: Most of the songs in this game that contain lyrics, the lyrics were written by 冯骥(Feng Ji), co-founder and the CEO of Game Science(The company that made this game). Such as 𝘓𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯 𝘕𝘰𝘵,𝘜𝘯𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘥 and more. Rumour has it that the translation of the English version of the lyrics was also done by Feng Ji himself to ensure that the lyrics accurately conveyed what he wanted to express. Black Myth Wukong Soundtrack album is already released on Most music streaming platforms.
Love your reaction and love this Game sooooo much.
As chinese player, i would think it would be better to add subtitle of lyric during animation for convenience purpose, but now i feel sometimes that the melodies and images are already enough for those master piece animation.
Once you complete the story and come to music library (if you want to), then you would know more what you listen to, which impact you more.
"Destiny" is my favourite, every time I listen I cry
58:39 Nearly one billion people can sing this song, which is a cultural mark of an era.
Thank you for your responses and discussions about this game. Me and the chinese video platform really enjoyed them. But I mean not offense, non chinese players can only get about 20-30% of cultural, historical, emotional contexts and subtexts of this game. Especially the ending song, it references something entirely different and greater topics.
Hear me out, what if the Monkey at the end of the animation is not Sun Wukong at the intro of the game, but the destined one with all six relics and no headband? He has Wukong's will, fight and will continue Wukong's legacy of fighting for his freedom against a corrupt Celestial Court
With everyone at Wukong's side already gone, the destined one (us) will continue the fight
The Destined One _is_ OG Wukong after beating Erlang. The ending is him in his new body that is free from the circlet. He revisits the cave and prepares to fight once again, this time, no circlet.
@@Reader999 I guess it's just different perspective. You could say that the destined one IS him after getting all the relics especially the memory. But I prefer theory where the destined one and Wukong are different entities because I like the idea that Wukong lives on through the Destined one and his legacy is honored and continued.
@@andreayao2096 well, the point of the destined one is to become the Monkey King, unrestrained. The plan was to kill himself so he can re-enter the Samsara cycle which is reincarnation in Chinese mythos. When he achieved enlightenment after the journey, he couldn't be in that cycle anymore as to achieve such is to rid of worldly things which the condition is to not be able to reborn again in said world. So Wukong denounce that as shown in the ed cutscene of the true ending where Erlang couldn't fully grasp the plan Wukong told him before. The destined one is Wukong's reincarnation vessel. He technically is in a way his own person, but the moment he regains the true mind relic from Erlang, he is OG Wukong again.
Failure to not faced Erlang again as the destined one means you replaced the broken shell and become a slave to the court. Thus, repeats the cycle again. Another destined one will be reborn anew to break free.
@@andreayao2096 Destined One is Sun Wukong's reincarnated in all but name. Reincarnation is a big theme in Chinese mythology and especially so in Journey to the West. Bajie's previous incarnation was Marshal Tian Peng reincarnated into what he is today, with the exception that Bajie kept all his past life's memories.
it's art,make me think deep,the life !
Well done completing the game! Very few players resonate emotionally with its culture like you do❤
What an amazing ending!🎉
Thanks, you may be suprised to know that, almost all Chinese poeple know how to sing the
There was a short documentary regarding this track's recording on bilibili .
It is really (add another really here) nice to see and hear a musician reacting and interpreting the game music / songs. Enjoyed the parts I watched. Hope more people find this video to enjoy.
Finally someone that actually understand something about this game. The gameplay itself is nothing special, its nothing new in the market, its just "fine" at its best. But when you look beyond that, this game is also an art. The game did something that most other games didn't, it teaches you about new cultures, moral values, meaningful story.
On September 27, 2024, the founder of Game Science replied to netizens that he wants his employees to take a two-year break.
So DLC won't be made quickly, it will take 2 years to slowly produce.
Since everyone is talking about the end. I guess I shall leave a quote by the Black Myth's dev Feng Ji: "To take on the Journey is more important than reaching the Destination."
subnote - His original words were Journey of obtaining scriptures (取经路) and Destination was 灵山/Mt.Ling/Gṛdhrakūṭa, the seat of Buddhism, but I think he meant to keep them vague that each person has their own journey(s) and goal(s)
would love to watch NG+ sun wukong from marco
WuKong's life is a life of revolt
love youuuuu
Bro, you must listen to the true ending credit song "unfinished" again with the lyrics! The lyrics is the core of this game, it made the true more impressed.
1:01omg!where lies the patj ahead?under your feet
黑神话拉高了游戏艺术的门槛,这是其他游戏公司不愿看到的。
They are busy hitting that sales target and profit 😢
Sun Wukong
macro, wt do to think about Not allowed me? Really want to know your opinion
Marco can you react to the anime soundtrack frieren, the anime soundtrack is very good, even beautiful to listen to
it's too challenging to translate all Chinese content. some translations are just not able to fully deliver the meanings behind them.
just too many poetries, classical Chinese and allusions.
BMW is beyond a game. Game Science really put their love of JTW into BMW and shared it with all of us.
This Chinese game is certainly loaded full with "over-capacity" 😁
Marco Polpetta? 😃👍👍👍
Marco, u go deeeeeep!! And that’s awesome! That’s what set u apart from other gamers. U not only play the game, but also look at the music, the visual, the story telling, and from the emotional perspective, ur personal experience, and the philosophy and culture behind the game. 🎉👍🫡
I love you, but I need subtitles.
