Kek actually originally came from World of Warcraft because of how the chat is garbled for the opposing alliance players, so lol becomes kek in their 'cipher'

Engagement boost. The Korean thing refers to kekeke which is also similar to Brazilian kkkkkkk

That's interesting, if true. I can only find other people making this claim with Google, while a WoW *Orcish = Common* translator simply saying "lol;" I tried a bunch of stuff, and it seems like Orcs speak a combination of English and gibberish? IDK, I've never played it. Another *Alliance = Horde* translator saying lol becomes "oyo." So I wonder if this is an apocryphal explanation of kek, to weed out "normies" or if it's simply changed in the years since "kek" was taken over by the Nazis?

I think it's a combination of factors. It's from WoW. It's from Korean chat lingo. There's apparently also an Egyptian deity called Kek, who has a frog head, which tied in nicely with their hijacking of the Pepe meme.

Only about one out of ten military personnel are "combat arms", that is, their job is actually to fight as an infantryman or cavalryman, etc. and of that ten percent I would guess less than one percent of them ever see combat. It is dangerous doing a lot of stuff in the military just training in the field though. I served and served with several people who had seen combat and they did not seem to think it was that big a deal with a few exceptions who were disturbed. Non-combat people are still trained, just not as intensively, to shoot and use assault rifles and different weapons like grenades and machine guns in the Army and especially the Marines. Other services get a lot of handgun training for certain jobs. Officers are college-educated and more liberal (except for nut-jobs like Flynn and Bannon) while enlisted are generally more conservative. Plenty of liberal enlisted like I was. Unfortunately, they have played fox news everywhere on military bases for decades. That has actually had a very bad effect in my opinion.

I'm the son of a career military man. I won't give more detail just for privacy, save to say he was enlisted. I have gotten into severe fights with him while pointing out that it is really easy for him to talk about things like bootstraps while having everything provided by him by the government. He just happened to be physically fit, and mentally inclined to be perfect for military life- he was fucking lucky, and so was I. I would have died in my youth had I not access to the healthcare provided by my father's service.
Other people aren't so lucky to win that genetic lottery, and be able to work a job that provides insurance, or even have chance to land one. Jobs with benefits are becoming more rare. But he bought into that bullshit that people are just lazy, and that there should be no safety net. It's really common, and really ironic.
Only recently has my father come to me after his retirement, and acknowledge that it's legitimately more hard to exist on your own these days. I'm proud of him for considering things, meeting me halfway and not turning into a literal fucking nazi.

Good point about the school bully tactic..
Good point about the chant.. yes, chanting together make humans feel part of a collective, it works even better when it's simple & rhytmic ("lock her up" "build the wall") three syllables appears to be the ideal.. even better than counter-chanting, a whistle is a perfect way to disrupt them (these things are LOUD, you don't need to come up with a chant and get people to be in rhythm)
The anti-communism part has always been part of fascist movement.. fearmongering about a socialist/communist uprising is how Mussolini, Franco & Hitler got into power and it was a huge part of every western fascist movement/regime since.. that's how they convince "normie-cons" to associate & support them in the first place .. that's probably why they're trying to frame Bernie Sanders, AOC, Elizabeth Warren and now even Biden as crazed leftists..

Oh boy! I've been working my way through all of your stuff Robert Evans, and I'm a big fan! As a Portlander I'm looking forward to the day our paths cross because there's so much I'd like to contribute!
For one thing, I was just waiting for Kekistan to come up, because it's so much more fucked up than you apparently realize. "kek" is how "lol" is translated through the World of Warcraft text channels if you're reading the other faction's chat. "kek" is literally how you laugh at and mock your enemies, and is often read by players as they're being griefed. It really reasonated with griefer culture, and a famous nepo-baby and agitator named... Steven Bannon! Yup, you read that right: bloviated Bannon has been quoted happily explaining how he used World of Warcraft trade and Barrens chat to radicalize and mobilize the younger voters ahead of the 2016 elections.
There's a lot of things that compiled to allow 2016, but the WoW connection is insidious enough that had Blizzard/Activision moderated their platform better, the world might be an entirely different place today, and that's crazy. Instead, bucolic Bannon used a video game as his training ground for how best to use Russian, Chinese, and NK bot farms to run a psyop, and bot farms' implementations only got more insidious afterwards.
(EDIT: I accidentally mixed up my fat, alcoholic corroborators)

I have written things on ambien. I do not believe it is possible to write coherent sentences on it. I am a writer myself, as in that was my BA, and essentially made me skip to approximately every third word. I have written comprehensibly on many other drugs including alcohol. I believe ambien is uniquely debilitating for writing complex sentences. I know no one believes him, but still.

A lot of odd takes on this.
"Kek" got its start because in World of Warcraft Blizzard scrambled the text of the opposing faction and LOL was KEK.
"Powerlevel" may be related to DBZ but it means you hide identifying information.
The Proud Boys are weirder than you mention. In fact they kicked Gavin out after he went at them for becoming facist - and from all I read on him hes a garbage person in some aspects but not in that way. He shouldnt have been shocked, his setup of it reminded me of that old TV miniseries The Wave.
Lastly its important to remember that this whole sphere is full of trolls. People trolling the rightoids, people trolling the press, trolling lefties. 4chan especially loves to stir up shit. The best example is how four chan came up with the idea that milk was an alt right drink of choice, just to see if the AFL would pick it up (and they did). That really masks the true idiocy from internet idiocy

It hurts Rob's credibility when he gets something as simple as the Kekistan meme wrong. It was a politically incorrect joke that got co-opted by Nazis.
While that may seem like a distinction without a difference to most people, to the people who know about these things, it makes them question how knowledgeable he is on these topics.

@@cthulhupthagn5771 Or... Maybe one of the markers of being an adult in the room is knowing what's pedantic BS and what's not?
Sorry, but the essence of online cultural and political debate is a big part of why we are even here, mired in nonsense "fallacy" accusations and pedantic behavior which are some kind of badge of honor.
Someone needs to really wake ya'lls up... This is sophomoric and mostly meaningless in the grander scheme. In fact that goes right to what I said... If that one thing reported about some subculture is all it takes to shift a person towards or away from Fascists then the fucking battle is already lost.
It's not about whether someone knows the ins and outs of fucking Gamergate Lore or the online schisms of the "Dark Intellectual Web" or what have you.
Pedantic Nerd culture's contribution to the current issues at hand is not great and maybe Nerds need to have a discussion as to why the worst aspects of fandoms have spread to every corner of society thanks to the Internet and the blinkered way we discuss anything and everything.
