Whilst the overweight customer is a paying customer, so is the one who had to stand. No one should have their seat taken because someone else doesn't fit in their seat. That's just absurd. If he paid for that seat, he paid for that seat. He's not the one who doesn't fit.

I was an obese person and avoided airplanes. Once needing to fly, I wanted to avoid the embarrassment for myself and other passengers, so I purchased two seats. Well when I boarded my two seats were joined by an arm rest that could not be raised! I quietly told the stewardess of the problem . She made a big deal of it, said there was nothing she could do and ask me to take my seat. All at the top of her voice! I am normally a passive person and would have just tried to sit down. But instead I stood my ground and at the top of my voice I yelled back at her! “I paid for two seats so that the people around me could be comfortable” A few moments later, A man from first class came back and asked what was wrong. He was told. Then he leaned to the man in the seat on the other side of me ( where the arms moved) said something, and that man got up and moved to fist class, I was able to lift the arm rest and sit in his seat. The first class man sat beside me where the armrest did not move. He then apologized , told me he was an off duty pilot and we got first class service all the way. I have since lost 150 lbs and no long have to buy two seats.

I understand what a burden I would be if someone was forced to be pressed up against my lard for the entirety of a flight. it's absolutely unfair to the other passenger. I'll either buy two tickets or one first class ticket. I'm glad these guys aren't going so far as to attack fat people because most people do. this is a problem that will only get worse over time, not just because people are getting fatter, but also because the airlines have been making their seats smaller

I use to be morbidly obese and flew. I realized that I was filling up more space than I should. I apologized to the person next to me and bought him drinks. Afterwards I decided that until I lost weight I was going to have to purchase 2 seats. It’s just not fair to other passengers. Thankfully I lost 200 lbs and I’m half my previous size and I fit nicely in one seat. Perhaps an alternative plan for the airlines is to have 1 or 2 “bariatric” seats per flight and charge a bit more for those

Congratulations on your weight loss! It must have been such a great feeling that the first time you took a flight and fit comfortably. I understand the feeling as I lost 160 lbs myself. Gained a bit back after a car accident, but I am now ~20 pounds away from my goal weight again :) I remember not even being comfortable behind the wheel in my car and having to push the seat back despite having short legs. I couldn't fit the old-fashioned desks in university classes or put the desk down in the old lecture hall row seating as I carried all my weight abdominally. I felt horrible everywhere and always stood out. Luckily, I never took up more than a seat and never had trouble using the seatbelts while flying, but I am sure I would have gotten there had I continued down the road I was on. So glad I am far away from that nightmare, and I'm so happy that you are as well. Sounds like both of us understood the detrimental effects of our size-- I am grateful that I didn't convince myself I was healthy and cringe at the thought of how I would be today if I had deluded myself.

I am obese and wheelchair bound. I hate to fly because of it. I use Southwest Airlines because of their policy towards the obese. They require
me to buy 2 seats, BUT, if the flight is not sold out then my 2nd
seat price is refunded. This is a most humane solution. Seating on Southwest is first
come/first served except for pre-boarding (which I do- wheelchair). They give me a “reserved” sign for my extra seat. Other passengers get mighty pissed
off that I get to reserve a seat. A very compassionate flight attendant on my last flight held a loud conversation with me about how I paid for that seat.

Try reading the service contract that the airlines have and you'll see that they don't even guarantee that they will take you to your destination.
At best, you're paying to get yourself and your baggage to a destination, not how comfortable you might be in the process. Because of fuel costs and such, the profit margin for airlines can be rather minimal. They probably have a formula for calculating how much delayed luggage is worth to you, how much half a seat is worth, etc. The fact is, flying *cargo* could probably be more comfortable. I was going to say that they pack us in like sardines in a can, but that's not accurate since at least sardines get to lay out straight and not in contortions. :)

Lucas Most airlines have you buy two seats, and then refund your second seat if the flight's not fully booked. Thank God. Because for people like me, when flying costs $2,000 one way, it's just not affordable to buy two seats.

  • @Jen52671
    @Jen52671 Год назад +62

I'm an obese person who always buys two seats or flies first class. The thing that drives me CRAZY is how hard the airlines make it to do so! None of the online ordering sites have an option to buy two seats for a single person... you just have to order two seats and then put the same name for the second seat or "My Name Seat #2" or something... and every. single. time. I've done this, even times that I've called to talk to a human being to make sure I did it right, everyone involved at the airline was totally confused about why my name was on two seats or why I had two tickets but only one person showed up. One particular time that still rankles me to think about it: I was doing a manual check-in. I made it clear that I had two seats because I was clearly fat and needed extra space... and yet when I got to my seat, they had not properly logged my extra seat, so there was already someone sitting in the middle seat when I arrived. I got it resolved, but the whole point of paying extra is so that I don't have to face those "OMG, no!" looks I got that day, and it seems like the system refuses to give me a way to do that with any security that I won't pay the extra money and still have a humiliating, terrible experience.

See this. This is an actual problem. If you need 2, you should be forced to use 2. But god fuckin damn booking already sucks dont make a system set up to shame people, for litterally being considerate. Its 100% easier to not do anything, but because you are. You get punished. Shits wild.

That's very considerate of you. What concerns me is how obese this country is on general that we'd need a system in place to accommodate. The bottom line is that you're being inconsiderate. I'm not a small woman. I would purchase 2 seats before I would go through the embarrassment of spilling over on a stranger or making someone stand because I'm being an asshole. No one cares why you're fat. Camille B I agree because right now it's basically switching the ideal body from skinny to curvy. Instead of promoting anorexia where they are not eating or just throwing it up to alot of girls forcing themselves to eat more and more past what they CAN physically eat because curvy is attractive. Skinny shaming is also a thing, but we have double standards it's like how people view rape with a women is more serious than with a man despite both being rape. It's the same thing. Fat shaming and skinny shaming are just equally as harmful, or possibly more so because more people are more blindly sympathetic to fat or obese people. They are both unhealthy.

Sin tax is a tax on items such as alcohol - ones that people could argue are sinful.

Mark Carter it was a basic size comparison but you are too stupid to get it. there is a clearly defined volume of space for every seat on an airplane, if you exceed it you pay for 2. and to address your earlier moronic statement about airlines adding more seats. maybe you forgot that over a decade ago southwest and several other airlines removed seats to replace and provide passengers with more leg room. but no you're right, someone who fits in a seat should be put out, or forced to be extremely uncomfortable so some tub of lard doesn't feel fat shamed for being forced to buy two seats. and just so you know, I weigh over 300 pounds and fit in a single seat just fine. so take your politically correct safe space loving socialist mentality and shove it up your ass! idiots like you are why the United States is failing.

most of the time they do buy two seats (because imagine being super large and squished asf. itd suck.). however, when you buy two seats for one person, you are only buying the opportunity to buy two seats for one person due to the "as many people on the plane as possible" attitude that airlines have. this means that if u buy two seats for one person, the airline is still eligible to sell one of your seats so that another person can sit there. when this happens u dont get a refund either. it's a crock of shit

JohnDoe Kassem 'special seats'? unless the person can't possibly do anything loose weight, obese people should make some changes to themselves, those seats were specifically designed for average sized people, for everyone, if someone failed to stay healthy whether it was eating too much or not exercising that is no ones problem but theirs.

Jp.Girl i dont think that its always the case that to be obese is a choice, but that is not really the point. I think its more about whats real and equitable. If two people visiting NYC want to buy a ticket to fly home, then the cost is not necessarily going to be the same, if one lives in washington DC and the other in paris. The circumstances are different. on the other hand if both passengers were flying from NYC to DC, but one has no luggage, whilst the other has 6 suit cases and a trunk, the cost will be vastly different. Its not logical as was mentioned on the report to say that its disciminatory, sometimes the factors involved prevent equal treatment to what appears to be a similar requirement. In europe, space/capacity requirement is the primary factor, therefore additional seats have to be purchased otherwise the plane does not fly! In the same token, a young baby eventhough the child is a human being requires very little space and takes up little capacity, but that baby is still recorded on the manifest.....long winded comment but I think it demonstrates logic and equitability over possible charges of discrinimation. Cheers!

Never been in that type of situation but when you purchase a ticket you expect a whole seat not one shared with an obese person. Forgot one story. There was these 3 girls who were morbidly obese. Well maybe not morbidly but I am guessing each one was over 300 lbs each. The plane was on the way to the Bahamas. They were nice girls btw. On the return flight they all sat in the very back. I thought "omg I know this plane is dragging its arse to get up into the air." Fine if you are overweight but do not take another's seat. I am glad the airlines are now charging these people.

So it only means that the flight attendants refused to give away one of their seats to the passenger , and forced him to stand for 7 hours. The passenger can sue the company for millions , not only for the inconvenience, but for the risk this represented for his life and the safety of other passengers because there had been turbulences he could have seriously injured himself / And the flight attendants know that , as they all have assigned seats in case of turbulences .

When I asked for gin and tonics, they were given to me free of charge.

I once saw a TV show where the staff at Southwest airways would use an airplane seat in a private room to discreetly determine whether a person could occupy a seat without compromising the adjacent seat(s). This avoided the embarrassment for all involved while actually onboard the aircraft and it gave the person in question the opportunity to travel on a less crowded flight or to pay for an additional seat.

I had a window seat on a small commuter jet next to a at least 400-pound man. I had to crane my neck to match the curvature of the fuselage because the guy next to me was taking at least half of my seat. I'm 6' 2" 195 pounds. I tried to wait standing in the aisle until take off time, but the flight attendant forced me to take my seat and I'm like "come on, are you serious?" It was the most claustrophobic experience of my life.

I have addressed this before take off. I told the flight attendant, "I can't put the arm rest down. The arm rest must be down." They moved me to another seat. This has to be handled BEFORE take off. Moving me may have forced them to reschedule another passenger. They did not ask the obese man to get off the flight so, I assume they had enough seats. Nevertheless, we all know the rules. Makes sure they enforce them before it's too late.

Once, I was seated next to a pretty heavy set guy during a 3 hour flight. He was taking up a good amount of my seat, to the point where our knees were touching even with me squished to the edge. And the cherry on top was that my tailbone would pop occasionally when I sat flat, so I was sore as shit for 3 hours straight. Not sure what might be the solution to this problem, but I shouldn’t have to relinquish my own comfort when someone else isn’t taking mine into account as well.

I was already seated, and when I realized she was going to sit down I lowered the armrest so as to force her into only her seat. She put the armrest back up, and I put it back down again.
A flight attendant saw the commotion and came over to see what the fuss was about. When the flight attendant understood that I wasn't going to have a person sitting on my lap the whole flight, the flight attendant offered me an upgrade to 1st class. The fat lady argued she should get the upgrade instead, But the attendant informed her that she had the size issue and that since she wanted to use the two seats that I would get the upgrade. 1st Class is so nice...
I understand that this flight was full. But when the fat guy got on, the issue should have been addressed before they left the gate. This is not a "Voluntary" flight denial. If there is no "Room" for one to be seated, then the one needs to be properly compensated.

Of course Fatty McFatterton thought she should get the upgrade. Because she should be accommodated for choosing to be grossly obese. Disgusting...

The amazing thing to me is that both the obese passenger and the guy inconvenienced were amicable about it. In 2022, this would have been a full-blown onboard brawl.

For people with healthy emotional and mental balance, that doesn't happen because they don't want to get thrown off the flight.

Right all you have to do is look back 30 years and see that people were far far skinnier than they are today. Did their genes evolve to make them become obese? I think not.obviously it all comes down the calorie intake: fast food places offering much larger portions, and the advent of the internet to complete the lazy cycle must have had an impact because nothing else changed much
