OMG. I was a grip assistant on that movie. It was shot in Luxembourg. Very interesting shoot. What good memories ;) Thanks for covering it. It´s an obscure movie with great actors, sets and ideas. Yes, it´s worth a watch.
I found the DVD by accident at a video store in Eastern Europe back in the early 2000s. Didn't know anything about it since it lacked promotion. I thought someone made a cash grab of a movie to make money on the memory of an old classic, but I was blown away. The casting, the setting, the visuals and the color scheme... Brilliant. And I was pleasantly surprised by the amont of humor that actually landed well.
F.W. Murnau: "How dare you destroy my photographer!" Max Schreck: "Did i kill some of your people? I can't remember." F.W. Murnau: "Why him, you monster? Why not the... script girl?" Max Schreck: "Oh. The script girl. I'll eat her later."
I LOVED this movie, Willem Dafoe should have won an Oscar for his portrayal because he was absolutely fantastic. The idea is also genius, as a re-telling of arguably the first major vampire film in history being made. You're the first page I've encountered that mentions Shadow of the Vampire, as a "horror comedy" and I realized, that is actually quite a correct way to put it, because there are many incidents in the movie that come off as downright funny. Max Schreck many times moves around almost like a cartoon character, fleeing and being ridiculously over the top, like when he first meets Gretta. Its subtle things, not in your face, like many things that Max Schreck says "magnificent bosom" just come off as so out of left field you can't help but laugh. This movie is so unique, but well written, the cast absolutely amazing, simply EVERYONE in it is great, but Dafoe stands at the peak of the performances.
I absolutely love Shadow of the Vampire! It's such an underrated gem that deserves more recognition. The story is brilliantly and creatively written, blending fiction and reality in a way that's both clever and captivating. And the acting-especially Willem Dafoe's performance-is nothing short of extraordinary. It's a masterclass in how to bring characters to life with nuance and intensity. A must-watch for any fan of cinema!
Glad you covered this movie. I saw it in theaters when it came out and I may have been the only one in theater but I really enjoyed the film. Great video!!
@ Count Orlok was a renamed Dracula in the script for Nosferatu. A fictional character even in the world of Shadow of the Vampire. The premise of that movie was what if Max Shreck was a real Vampire. Even if Max Shreck wasn’t his real name it certainly wasn’t “Count Orlok”
I was fortunate enough to catch this one on the big screen when it first came out, and remember enjoying it immensely. So much so that as soon as it was over, I headed straight to the record store and purchased a copy of the soundtrack. The score by Dan Jones is some real top-notch stuff, perfectly effective, and impressive when you learn it was very first soundtrack gig.
Casting Willem Dafoe in any role is always a fuckin brilliant idea. This movie just proves my point to the 'nth degree. And now he's come full circle, co-starring in the new Nosferatu film opening on Christmas day.
I saw "Shadow of the Vampire" in the theatre, and now I own it. It's in my Amazon Prime library. Loved it! The movie leaves with the question...who is the real monster? I didn't hear you mention that Willem Dafoe received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Max Schreck in this film.
Discovered this one through my mom at random one week years ago. Absolutely loved it & still do. The reverence for Muranu’s film is evident in the direction & the actors playing slightly exaggerated versions of their real-life subjects, but not disrespectful. Plus who doesn’t want to see Dafoe and Malkovich out-ham the other
I discovered the film in 2009 and fell in love with it. As a fan of horror, vampires, and of course Nosferatu -- this was a weirdly compelling and somewhat meta-horror flick that worked wonders for me.
I gotta get this on dvd! Dafoe is brilliant as the Count. I remember seeing this a few years after it released in theaters, and it felt like a fever dream. Then I saw the McGuire Spiderman movie and I was like "omg that's him" when I saw Dafoe as Green Goblin.
I work in a small library and have this flick in our collection. I've recommend patrons check it out. Those who have told me that they were pleasantly surprised by how much they enjoyed it.
I found this film by accident on HBO or Cinemax back in the 2000s and being vampire obsessed, watched it. It gave me a bit of an obsession with Nosferatu.
I've always loved this movie. With all its quirkiness. Great performances. Good script. Great setting. I thought it was very self aware of its it's reference material...a very well done, little gem of a movie that every black and white horror fan should watch.
I felt like this didn't have much of a plot, but more of a humorous idea taken really far. However, it was an absurd idea with such quality that I enjoyed. I mean c'mon Dafoe and Malkovich?
If you want to review another overlooked Malkovich flick with an insane backstory, look up _Siberian Education_ and the author of the novel it was based on
I remember watching the original Nosferatu in third grade from a projector. When it was done our teacher Mr.Van (awesome teacher) would let us watch it backwards. He was fantastic teacher who really cared for his students. This was back in 82 and long before all the woke shit took over.
Platform shoes.... It sucks to be a part of the group that gets constant suicide fuel, and it's relentless. Whether it's Carlton, short wolverine, or so many other things. It's great to be reminded that it takes a massive, spectacle based campaign that is largely founded on virtue signalling and high levels of litigation. It sucks because most short men will just " Man" through the insults, you perfect, privileged people never live through or see the hurt. Find true maturity and empathy please!
WhyTF wouldn’t you have “Mr. Barlow” from Stephen King’s “Salem’s Lot” mentioned in the beginning of this video? The GOOD ORIGINAL movie not that new “woke” trash.
let the right one in was so good compared to the junker Hollywood made. that said this movie was such a cool decon of the genre and mythos themselves. epically underappreciated. but wtf @9:54"yaccolades"? can't bother to review your own reviews?
I really wanted to like this when it came out but I didn’t care for it. Haven’t seen it since the day it opened. I wonder if now I’ll see it with a different set of eyes as a fifty years old s opposed to a twenty-five year old.
I never got the love for this movie, it was hammy, and the recreations were stupid and over over acted even moreso than in Nosferatu. Dafoe was awful and acted like he was a villain in a Joel Schumacher Batman movie. Wasn’t anything close to max schrek and his low key creepiness.

I loved this movie. I still have the dvd. 🥂
I freaking LOVED this film! "The reason why Max Shrek played such a good vampire... _is because he was actually a vampire!"_ Brilliant angle!

I’m going to Slovakia in December and on my list is to track down movies. Very slim picking for available media from that part of the world.
F.W. Murnau: "How dare you destroy my photographer!"
Max Schreck: "Did i kill some of your people? I can't remember."

The directors commentary on the DVD is absolutely brilliant. Sheds new light (pun intended) on every frame of the film.
This is a weird coincidence. I just watched Shadow of the Vampire last night.
It’s such an underrated movie.
Same here 😀
Where?
An absolute masterpiece of a movie. Saw it when it came out and love it to this very day. The score is also excellent by the way.
Glad you covered this movie. I saw it in theaters when it came out and I may have been the only one in theater but I really enjoyed the film. Great video!!
We appreciate it
One of my top five vampire movies. An absolute favorite.
I saw the original Nosferatu in the theater. I was 44 at the time.
Wow so you're 146 now? Are you a Draculas?
Must've felt like something of a biopic, right?
Ok boomer
@@ominosersudlander1488 Nah, that’s before the Boomer generation.
Well then, I have a castle to sell you.
Defoe didn’t play Count orlock, he played Max Shreck playing Count orlok
He played Count Orlok playing Max Shreck playing Count Orlok

@ Rewatch it.
@ Ok, I will. I admit it’s been 20 years or so. 😂

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! The opening credits alone are a total trip.
Willem Dafoe is in 2 Nosferatu movies now
Just saw the new one last night. So effing good!
He was destined to be in the Eggers remake. It was…providence
I loved this movie! Dafoe remains the first (and so far only) actor to be nominated for an Academy Award for playing a vampire.
Max: "You know, I'm something of a writer myself."
I bought this on DVD on a whim, 23 years ago. Sure glad that I did, it's been one of my favs
The fact we still don't have a blu ray release is wild
Casting Willem Dafoe in any role is always a fuckin brilliant idea. This movie just proves my point to the 'nth degree. And now he's come full circle, co-starring in the new Nosferatu film opening on Christmas day.
Unironically one of my favorite vampire movies. I hunted down a dvd copy some years back.
Very underrated film.

Udo Keir was also one of my fave vampires in Blood for Dracula
He was also one of the head vampires in Blade.
Awesome, underrated an quite forgotten movie.
I discovered the film in 2009 and fell in love with it. As a fan of horror, vampires, and of course Nosferatu -- this was a weirdly compelling and somewhat meta-horror flick that worked wonders for me.
It’s funny how Willem Defoe is playing the opposite role in the Nosferatu remake.
One of my favorites ever
I finally found it on RUclips. Haven’t seen it since it first came out. Dafoe is brilliant as usual Malkovich.
Want this on BR so bad...
Hopefully this film will get a bluray release with the new Egger's Nosferatu coming out.
All my vampire fan friends LOVE this movie. I forgot Eddie is in it, I'll need to watch it again soon.
Very fun film. Rented it in the latter days of Blockbuster Video (of sainted memory.)
Carey Elwes was fantastic in this, as was nearly everyone else.
I work in a small library and have this flick in our collection. I've recommend patrons check it out. Those who have told me that they were pleasantly surprised by how much they enjoyed it.

I got to see this in the theater when it released. I’ve always loved this film.
I absolutely loved seeing this in the theater and as a fan of the 1922 film it was a great take on the story.
Love it. I first saw it back to back with the original nosferatu, and that was a fun way to see it.
I remember seeing this in the art house cinema. John Malkovich and Willem DeFoe were awesome in the creepy vampire movie.
I love this movie, and I always will. And I can Hardly wait to Watch Eggers' Remake of Nosferatu
I really liked this movie when it was realsed on VHS. I'm still waiting for a special edition Blu Ray realse of this movie.
nice preparation for 'Nosferatu' 👍👍
I felt like this didn't have much of a plot, but more of a humorous idea taken really far. However, it was an absurd idea with such quality that I enjoyed. I mean c'mon Dafoe and Malkovich?
Innocent Blood is my favorite vamp movie
"This is hardly your picture any longer!" (1:03:27 minutes into the movie)
fantastic movie
Very under-rated
I love this movie
I Remember The Trailers and TV Spots This Movie Got I Can't Wait For Robert Eggers Version of Nosferatu is Going To be Like.
Defoe was amazing as Nosferatu
This was a great film with a terrific story!
Saw it last night, I liked it
I keep trying to get my friends to watch thisssss
If you want to review another overlooked Malkovich flick with an insane backstory, look up _Siberian Education_ and the author of the novel it was based on
Have you seen "Innocent Blood?"
It's a classic horror film 🎥
Kirby was here
Count Dracula (1977) Louis Jourdan 😀
I remember watching the original Nosferatu in third grade from a projector. When it was done our teacher Mr.Van (awesome teacher) would let us watch it backwards. He was fantastic teacher who really cared for his students. This was back in 82 and long before all the woke shit took over.
Oh, yeah, Noss-farah-ooh
Brilliant movie!
This movie was GREAT!
Did he ever eat that script girl?
Love this movie.
I loved this movie.
Great movie.
I loved it
The three most obnoxiously overused words on this channel:
1. Quote/Unquote
2. Gorehound
3. Schlocky
This is what green goblin should look like, but green.
Great movie

I liked it.
Poor script girl... 😢
I liked the movie. It was good.
NOSSFFERAH UUU
Awesome movie is you love camp!
Nosferodoo
As pronounced by joe “ever tried this in dmt” Rogan
This is the ultimate nosferatu movie, 2024 was a mustache covered terd and utterly disappointing.
WhyTF wouldn’t you have “Mr. Barlow” from Stephen King’s “Salem’s Lot” mentioned in the beginning of this video?
The GOOD ORIGINAL movie not that new “woke” trash.
For what? Barlows look was ripped from the original nosferatu
I thought it was very well done, but it's not a film you need to watch more than once.

Dafoe was awful and acted like he was a villain in a Joel Schumacher Batman movie. Wasn’t anything close to max schrek and his low key creepiness.
I love vampire films but hated this film . So boring .
I didn’t get the love for Dafoe, he was terrible in this.
That movie SUCKED. coming from a life long Dracula, this film just does not work. Massively wasted potential
Trump 2024, we got there guys............fantastic
I love this movie
I love this movie
I love this film
