  • Recently I spoke to a Total War content creator called Rampaned who has decided to lead a development effort to create a spiritual successor to Medieval 2 Total War.
As most of the content he makes are playthroughs of the Medieval 2 and its mods like Tsardoms or Divide and Conquer, he’s legitimately decided enough is enough if CA won’t do it then I will and he’s got a small team now of coders and artists who have begun essentially building the game.
So I had a chat with him about what he’s planning, the various features he’d like to include in the game, the Total War titles and mods like DEI or Medieval Kingdoms 1212 he’s drawing inspiration from as well as new features he’s thinking about and a campaign map that he’s working on making right now to begin a foundation for the game from which he can start testing features like factions, cities and procedurally generated battles maps.
In this video I'd like to bring a spotlight to his efforts, the work done so far, his ambitions for the future and hopefully by the end you'll be interested enough to find out more and perhaps even show him some support!
I really hope you enjoyed this video if you did give it a like and drop any thoughts or questions in the comments section below. I’d love to hear what you think about the Project Renaissance and everything you’ve seen here today!
Subscribe to the channel for more Total War content just like this and thanks for watching guys I’ll see you next time.

Project Renaissance is hugely ambitious, but I love the various sources of inspiration, I love the features he wants to include from older games and new and I love how engaging Rampaned is being with modders, with other creators like Legend and with the wider community through his Dev Diaries. I can't wait to see what else he comes up with and hopefully he continues to get some positive momentum! Check out the video description here for links to his YT channel and to his discord to support him and the project directly!

Then push the scope wider.

RE: the tech tree, you can easily have both within the longer time period. Namely the broad strokes of technological advancement is handled dynamically and the further refinement. Or pergaps the possibility of pop up events for one time investment in certain, at the time, seemingly fringe technology like say the printing press. Which has a internal percentage chance of being successful and then confers a wide array of bonuses from say martial ability for troops and generals to the time taken to build/health of buildings. All due to the vast amount of subjects written materials were created after the establishment of the press.
Having said that, the press could be the dynamic tech and then the direction of materials published (martial, architectural or religious. Conferring a selection of bonuses within the chosen field).
Forgive me if that doesn't make total sense, I am exceptionally tired.

Honestly, it kinda annoys me that devs want to put a technology tree in every possible game. Like yeah it's nice to have some agency but some uncertainty is good imo and also it is not like in the reality people know what exactly a given research will give them if anything at all. What I liked was Victoria 2 system - you have some pretty simple technology trees that you can choose but then you get bunch of those mini technologies that are unblocked with those bigger ones. and the chance of getting them is on your other techs, your political system, what is your society and the like. I guess a system like that could work very well in a game set in the medieval times

    • @madwellmusic8995

That would make the game more immersive. If technology was centralized around the efforts and traits of the ruling class in some cases, and others being historic scripted events that improved quality of life (at least for medieval standards). Building chains should have policies attatched to them that have hidden triggers for the trait system for governor too

@@88balloonsonthewall70 not intentionally. Imagine two people colliding at full speed and then more than double it. It wouldn't be pretty. CA model for how cav works has never been great. If cav came to a dead stop in front of infantry to engage them in melee with swords they would be at a huge disadvantage against the infantry.
The point of cav is to break up blocks of infantry, not to engage them slowly on equal footing. They should work more like the chariots and elephants in Rome 1. Either that or mobile jav cav/archers. If they get stuck in a slow melee with infantry and don't dismount, they're dead IMO.

Look at Ancient Warfare: Han Dynasty or Nobunaga's Ambition or Romance of Three Kingdoms. Honestly I'm excited for it, especially as a Historic die hard and Historian, but I only worry because indie Games like this tend to have a lack luster art style or look which is unfortunately a real drive for me personally. If it isn't visually impressive my ADHD self gets bored quite quick even if the gameplay itself is very riveting and immersive, If a historic game cant invoke the right feelings it can become very plain for me. But I'm happy to finally have so many of the things I've missed about total war.

I've said for YEARS that CA should just use UE, because their engine is so dated by this point and UE is _right there_ and so good. Admittedly, I have no idea how well UE can handle the TW-style game loop. Seems like a decent option, given that CA has been doing about everything in its power to avoid developing a new game engine themselves.

I'm done with CA. I won't buy a name, and I won't enable lack of innovation.

I think the huge popularity of retro style (artistically) games has shown that genuine gamers aren’t actually all that obsessed with graphics. I adore project zomboid for example. Carrion, nightmare of decay etc… and a long list of hugely popular complex games with PS1 graphics.
Great complex gameplay will always take precedent over graphics every time. Good graphics are a bonus. If you can get great complex gameplay AND great graphics. By all means do it. It’ll only make it better. But if we have to pick one. Concentrate on complex and fun gameplay.
You’d be surprised how much high end graphics don’t matter. Especially if you’ve got a competent designer/lead who knows how to create an aesthetic and keep it consistent across the games wold. Just a consistent and unique aesthetic is all that’s needed to create immersion and believability in a fantasy universe. Just look at all the cartoons where animals talk etc… total nonsense but it still fits for whatever reason. Even if the models themselves are blocky or not truly realistic. Keeping a style and being consistent with it, will do wonders.
    Gameplay matters far more.

As a somewhat Unreal enthusiast, Id like to warn about the fact that Unreal has no unified or real solution for very large numbers of AI units. What solutions there are use all sort of tricks, smoke and mirrors that would simply not work in a live largescale battle. Would it be possible ? Probably, but you'd need to heavily dive into unreal base code and thats not a solo or even small team job. For the effort, I think you'd be better off using the warscape engine - modding warhammer 2/3 etc

I seriously hope at this early stage he considers a more CK3 like real-time campaign which as opposed to the turn based system of total war. It solves the problem that the 'You must have a general for an army' was designed to solve; namely small armies roaming around and causing problems for the player that can't chase them down because it's not their turn or because they don't have enough movement points. It allows for refined control of armies and for the movement of armies to more closely resemble what they would have been capable of in the context of an actual military campaign.
Like FOTS had the best naval battle system but the worst experience on the campaign map because in between player turns navies would swoop in and destroy the ports, then retreat into god knows where within the FOW and you wouldn't be able to find them with the movement points you had left. In reality navies would be patrolling and attempting to intercept one another in real time.
CK3 has a very simple military system compared to total war but the actual approach of each county and duchy having a certain number of levies/knights/men at arms that take several days in real time to muster at a location and then march into an area with limitations on supply, attrition, etc. where a military campaign takes 1-2 years rather than 10 years worth of consecutive turns.

As for armor upgrades, be a little more realistic about it. Have different armors that have slightly different advantage. Although plate armor is by far the best armor of course even then fluted plate armor will just be much stronger all around but have a extra plus in protecting against blunt force weapons like in axes, halberd, pollax, and weapons like it.
While angular plane plate armor with slopes will have a bigger plus against spears, pikes, Lance, and missiles.
But has something like mail armor well have it as a generic armor with no extra plus but much stronger than non-metal armors.

That might require a massive Stat sheet check list to host all these small indicators. But with an overhauled building system, all of these variances could be offered through a dynamic Armoury browser tree. I think every building should come with a catalouge of unique options and/or politics. Upgrading blacksmith opens up new forging techniques, or specific tech trees to unlock techniques in metallurgy for military or civic purposes.

Simulating single entities fighting as a cohesive unit makes pathfinding an target locking wonky. What about large units fighting as one? Rome 2 couldnt do it...mechanics, maps, tech trees. All good. But really capturing hand to hand combat. The standard is so high. The difficulty i can only imagine. Individual units should have characteristics/behaviors or descrepancies that impact their performance. A class system would determine a units combat effectiveness. Weapons and protection increase percentage of survival. Unit behavior could indicate fighting prowess, kill animations, aggression/strike triggers. Unit descriptions should actually play out on the battlefield. Bringing aythenticity and histroy behind your recruits and their cultural differences. Training. Social ethos. So many intangible aspects. So much has to be considered (and scrapped)

Also I'd love to see separation of time periods as Middle Ages are lenghty period, so for example Medieval 1 did a good job by making it Early, High and Late Medieval Era focusing on different Factions, Warfare type and such, From early period marking the beginning of Crusades to Fall of Constantinople, with different events like Mongols, Baltic Crusade etc it's just too big to fit in one game. Free and Open source is the way to go if his serious about this project, let the community engage and support the development process and be able develop for it. A good example of a game that has done this is the long running RTS game Warzone 2100 it was first created as a proprietary game by published by eidos and created by pumpkin studios, eidos Shut down pumpkin studios, a group by the Name N.E.W.S.T unofficially supported the game after pumpkin studios was shut. Eventually in 2003 the group petitioned Eidos to release the source code and art content for the game which eidos obliged and was released under the GPL2 license since then the group and contributors have constantly been working and updating the game. Which is why i say if he is willing to do this he should make it a open source game project it would definitely help with the development of the game.

I think this project is too big. I think it would behoove the team to start out with a much smaller project to get things rolling. Maybe they re-imagine the Brittania campaign or another one of the DLCs. That would be a smaller map, a shorter period of history, and fewer factions.
One of my issues with M2 is the sheer length of the time period. I think a lot of players have never seen many of the end-game events (like the new world). I think a smaller, more focused goal would be wiser.

Lamellar armor have a slight plus in missiles defense than mail armor.

please tell him that he should watch all the videos by Voulond and Dishonorable Daimyo, where they completely explain all that is wrong, and all that is important about the game. no more "unit variety", no more "fantasy vs history"... just a good game that works and is fun to play

When it comes to technology trees, you COULD limit the technology to a certain year, preventing you from developing anachronistically and becoming too advanced too early. Research bonuses would still be useful, since you could develop earlier than your opposition, and it would be very useful if development took a while, giving you at least a few years advantage with guns against your lesser advanced foes.
