I keep coming back to this video. I really admire Joel for never losing his touch with his child-like exploratory nature. There's a distinct difference between being childish and retaining "child"-like qualities such as just being curious, just having fun with what people deem as being "immature". People who insist on being oh-so mature and whatever will inevitably end up miserable. But look at him, he just did what he truly loves, not giving a fuck about what anyone else thinks. Fuck the people thinking this is a waste of time, this is him using tools that seem infinitely complex to others to.. just have fun. He grew from this, he learned, probably troubleshot plenty of things and became more familiar with those midi controllers, steppers, synthesizers and whatnot that most people think as being alien technology or some shit. Keep doing what you love doing!

Practice and looking at some of the labels since most buttons and such are labled in a way. I'm not a synth expert though...

Well soft synths and the modern DAW's are amazing and what they are capable of doing I can't live without. But you are totally right. Especially when it comes to the sound design, there are just so many things you can't do with software and sounds you can't get without analog. But using both worlds interchangeably and knowing how to do so is the greatest part of modular synthesis.
That's kinda possible now :) Build a massive gaming computer and hook it all up to that :) Plus the fact that hardware keeps getting more and more compressed, so setting a lot of stuff together shouldn't be waay too hard :)
It's actually more like Reason considering it's the closet thing to actual physical modular tools like he's using here. This is what people who wanted to make EDM a long ass time ago before computers HAD to use to make music. So he just sort of has it being a huge nerd and stuff wanting some of the older stuff, but if you get Reason it's basically like having a blank canvas for one of these cabinets and you just plug in whatever mods you want to use with such a realistic capacity that you actually can attach the things exactly like you would with a real one with virtual cables and everything. It's pretty remarkable. FL Studio is way more modern and IMO easier to use but this is just like a throwback to old school music production and he's rich/crazy enough to wanna mess around with it to begin with.
The day FL studio and Ableton literally let you route virtual cables amongst actual virtualized synthetic machines is the day I will agree it's the closest version. I mean Reason is literally this except versus having it in reality you're merely plugging cables around and building one of these racks, virtually, from the ground up. By the way I hate Reason, and the cable aspect of it is one reason I hate it so much, but that is why it's there and the reason it is that way.
