    My dad had a 86 or 87 ( I can't remember I was 8 years old at the time) Firebird with the 2.8 V6 and manual transmission. I remember the day I went with him to buy it brand new off the showroom floor back then and I hope to have one of my own someday particularly this generation but I'd happy with any generation model from 1967-2002. I miss both my dad and this car very much.

    Wow, outstanding example of the 87' Pontiac Trans Am GTA. Looks like it's right off the showroom floor. Thanks for the very in depth review of the functions of all interior components. One thing I didn't see you mention is how the auto tilt rear view mirror will automatically tilt back down (even if it's dimming because of light) when the car is placed in reverse gear. This is for safety reasons. When backing up, the manufacturer wanted to have the mirror tilt back down so the driver has the clearest view possible. Try it. Go to a dark location, place the car in park and with it running, turn on the interior lights. The mirror will tilt up to dim from the interior overhead light between the t-tops . Keeping the interior lights on, place the car in reverse. The mirror will automatically go back down. This is one piece of information that the dealer was telling me when I purchased my 87' GTA. I've read the entire owner's manual and I've not found it in there. There was about three such details about this car that the dealer shared with me that are not in the owners manual.

    I love the overhead console on the 87 GTA. Unfortunately it wasn’t available on the 88+ models. (I own a 1988 GTA) The cool thing about the 88 GTA is that it was the last year for the digital dash option and the first year for the radio controls in the steering wheel. Also, the radio was changed for 1988…. each of the equalizer “sliders” has a LED light. Finally, the “box” next to the tachometer is a shift light on cars with a 5-speed.

    • @jonathanmorrisey5771
      @jonathanmorrisey5771 Год назад +1

      The box in the tach face should be the "UPSHIFT FOR BEST FUEL ECONOMY" light on manual trans cars.
      SIDEBAR.... these were actual bulbs in the analog cluster.

    • @l337pwnage
      @l337pwnage 4 месяца назад

      Ya, I was gonna speculate that it was a "shift" light. Those were not too unusual for the time.
      IIRC my '85 had a "shift" light, however it was not hooked up on my model. I actually think I put my car alarm light in that location so keep it "stealth".

  • @WildBill236
    @WildBill236 Год назад +6

    Yes my 85 T/A WS6 has that same overhead console, with reminder wheel dials and Firebird flashlight. I make sure I never kept batteries in it, as I would never use it. Nice radio, mine is similar but the step below with knob dials for tuning and volume, but I have "performance sound" option, with factory subwoofer and gain sliding dial, right between rear defroster and hatch popper controls. Nice car, these are very underrated classics, mine has 5.0 TPI with 205hp, it moves plenty fine for an 80s era V8.

  • @vruiz78

    I absolutely love those GTA’s❤ truly ahead of it’s time!

  • @l337pwnage
    @l337pwnage 4 месяца назад

    Those overhead consoles were available several years, with virtually no changes it seems like. And the elastic band for the cigarette pack holder never lasted very long. I always meant to get mine fixed, but never did.
    Looks like it has the knockout for the rear wiper yet, unless that is used for something else in later years.
    Bummer that you have to set the brake to open the hatch. On the slushbox you'd think they'd just tie it to the neutral safety switch.
    I don't remember that being a problem on my '85, but I also never tested for it.
    I was just happy it had a remote release so I could hook it to my car alarm.
    Felt pretty cool to have key fob door locks and trunk release back then. ;)

    Nice 87'. She's mint. My 91' Z28 has map lights in the bottom of the mirror, the main roof one and that's it. No floor lights. My father came home with a brand new 86' IROC when I was a kid and it also had the self adjusting mirror and overhead console wiith the dials and lights. The removable flashlight said Camaro on it obviously. Thanks for the memories.

    I have an 88 GTA. Drove it today. Has all of those features plus the steering wheel radio controls. Still trying to figure out how to clear the system. I replaced the radiator and it detected low coolant. Had to replace a headlight but it still thinks the headlight is out. So the coolant message and headlight message still pops up every time I drive the car.

    Hi Ryan, a 1987 Trans Am is for sale in my town. It has a large spoiler that I didn’t really care for but when I saw the pics of the interior, it’s the digital dash like your car. Do you know if this one is a GTA or did they put digital dashes in non GTA Trans Am’s? I don’t see any GTA badging

    • @SoGoYoko
      @SoGoYoko Год назад

      The digital dash was an option only on the 87' & 88' models when these 3rd gen Pontiac's were new, not just specific to GTA's. The digital dash wasn't specific to the GTA option package. Another thing to keep in mind is that these cars are well over 30 years old. About 15 - 20 years ago, it was somewhat popular for new current owners to convert analog to digital because of the late 80's Night Rider series. So keep in mind that 30 + year old 3rd Gens with a history of being owned by a number of different individuals throughout the years, may not have the original equipment. Best to look at the RPO sticker inside the car for accuracy of options currently on the vehicle if it really matters what type of dash.

    Does anyone know for sure which years and how many of the Trans Am cars had this digital dash?

    • @SoGoYoko
      @SoGoYoko Год назад +1

      Common knowledge of this particular Pontiac, the majority of GTA's produced in both 87' and 88' had the digital dash. Less common for these two years was the analog dash cluster. And I seem to recall that there was less then 5 GTA's in 89' that were produced from the GM Factory with the digital dash option. The following years that GTA's were produced (90' 91' and 92") none were produced from the factory with the digital dash option. Problem is, many of these cars have changed hands quite a number of times over the years and it was somewhat popular at some point in time for current owners to change out the analog for the digital or visa versa to their desire. And so for that reason, it's always good to reference the RPO sheet for the correct codes, year and the VIN # on that RPO sheet to match the car's VIN #.

      Yeah, because it's a t-top. GM produced only GTA's with manual trans in hard top & 5.0 from 87' through 88". You couldn't get manual trans and also t-tops & large 5.7 engine. Only exception was if the GTA was produced exclusively for export to Canada. So, if you happen to be looking at a 87' or 88' GTA with 5.7 and manual trans, look at the RPO sheet for the Canadian export code. If it's not there, it 's done aftermarket. When looking at the RPO sheet, make sure the VIN on the RPO sheet matches the VIN on the car. Lots of clones and slapped together "GTA's" out there. Happened to see one on ebay recently. A 91' "GTA" for big stupid dollars and the VIN of the car didn't match the VIN on the RPO sheet shown in the auction. Of course, a picture of the RPO sheet showing "Y84" for "GTA" was on the RPO sheet. Too bad the VINs didn't match.

    • @l337pwnage
      @l337pwnage 4 месяца назад

      @@johna.4334 Actually, it was because GM doesn't like to warranty manual transmissions, lol.
      When 4th gens came out with their 6 spd manual, GM actually ran out of transmissions to fill orders. I know one person who had to wait a year so they could get a new manual car.
      Also, normally the manual is the "base" option, and you pay extra for the auto.
      In the 4th gens, the 6 popper was like that, but if you bought the V8, the auto was standard, and the stick was a "free" option.
