This tutorial was amazing and I highly recommend. My BMW dealer wanted $347.00 to change out the air filters, so I did what any educated consumer would do and went on RUclips. After a short search, I happened upon this video. He was methodical, easy to follow and precise in his simple to follow instructions. After buying the OEM BMW Filters online and watching the tutorial twice, I gave it a shot. Fifteen minutes later, I was finished and put my tools away. The hardest part was getting the bottom filter out, which took some extra effort. I have subscribed, which I recommend you as well, and the Friendly Mechanic will be my go-to before any future BMW do it yourself projects. Saved me $317.00. Really dynamite presentation. Thank you.
By far the best DIY video I've seen. Thank you!! As a side note, when I removed the old cabin filters I discovered my local BMW dealer had installed them backwards (arrow towards engine) when they replaced them 2 years ago while under maintenance warranty. So, you helped me save $150 and do it right this time.
Well, it took me almost an hour to do a 15-minute job. I just couldn't contort my old body well enough to get that little door re-installed but persistence pays off. Money saved! Thanks for the video.
Thank you! Completed it today saved $$$ from dealer. It’s a little unorthodox trying to access the filter area removing and installing, just need to take time.
Very well done tutorial. I was able to use this to change out my cabin air filters on 2018 X1. One suggestion when installing the new filters for the second one I used a flat head screwdriver to push down on the first one to make more room, and that made it easier.
I have been watching a few videos on the BMW F48 since I want to start doing the simpler maintenance myself. I find your videos very easy to follow (your narration in detail and camera angles) and for that reason alone I have subscribed to your channel. Looking forward to the spark plug replacement video for the F48. Thank you for sharing
Thank you for enjoying the videos. I will work on getting the spark plug video finished. But just an FYI. That too is an easy job, nothing too difficult to remove.
Excellent video. For those with right hand drive cars the filters are mounted to the left of the drivers seat. There is no upper panel to remove just the side panel. Removing the filter container door and filters are a right pain due to the steering column location. Thank you for the video.
Right hand drive vehicles has the filters accessible on the driver side. Only need to remove a T15 on side panel and unclip. Learnt it by following your video and could not find the filter housing door. Good video!!
Only saw your comment now and my car was right hand driver. I had to open everything on left side and there was nothing. On driver side 1 t15 and that's job done. Only if I had read this comment earlier.
Excellent video for a difficult project. I had two problems: 1. Cramped space/impossible visibility. Even with a good work light, I had a hard time seeing the hinges for the filter door and the entire opening for the filters. 2. The connectors (light, speaker, cigarette lighter) were very difficult to disconnect; not at all as easy as shown in the video. I ended up taking out the whole speaker. Overall, this is a PIA project due to user-unfriendly design, which I only tackled because of this outstandingly clear video.
Awesome video!!! Only BMW could engineer a cabin air filter replacement to be so annoying and difficult that you want to pay someone to do it. All other manufacturers have it in the glove box and all you have to do is unclip 2 pairs of tabs in ~30 seconds.
Great vid, excellent quality, appreciate it! Also, thanks for including actual socket and torx sizes... saves from having to fumble around or take out the whole set.
Mine happened to be very easy only one screw and that's it as it was on right side. But I opened left side first to check and cabin filters were not on left side. Will know it for future now. Thanks for your video
@@friendlymechanic9778, I just put the new filter, now it’s Texas heat and I am struggling to put the cover..so taking a break…. These are one of the hardest cabin air filter..I changed another Honda in less than 5 min!
This has to be the most stupid cabin filter location I seen on a BMW. I could see any customer taking their x1 to some mechanic for service and breaking the panels or forgot to connect the electric wire back and the customer would never know. This video is a chef’s kiss great insight and info in how to this DIY.
Wow you are good, very clear and very detailed instructions. You make the whole thing sounds so easy and fun, enjoy your tutorial very much, big thanks. BTW, I have been servicing my own vehicle and friends’ for over 40 years, it still amazes me how confident you are.
Thanks for making this video. The lower of the 2 filters is a real pain to access/manipulate. The working condition in the front passenger foot well is extremely uncomfortable. BMW engineers are sadists having this design. My Volvo and Boxster have easier to access/replace cabin air filters by being located under the front hood. I suppose the under-hood location on other cars means they only clean first time incoming air, whereas filter in footwell means they also filter closed loop recirculating air
i like your explanation its help really much to make everything easy with car alone really thanks you much and keep going i like to fix my car alone now because of you. more vedio for x1 more please 😊 thanks you again for everything my friend 😉
@friendlymechanic9778 well the filters alone were only $27.59 oem. It was listed on things needed done when I just had my oil changed, but I can't access it now. Parts alone were probably $50 then say $200 in labor. So well over $150 in savings. Oh and got an air filter too. Both parts came to $54. Saved a lot!! Would love to do breaks myself. Any videos on replacing pads and or rotors?
That’s great! I’m glad to hear it! I have a video on the engine air filter as well. For pads and rotors I would love to put a video up but I need an X1. I need to find someone who needs front brakes done.
Sorry man that’s a bit of a distance for me haha. But I am looking out for that car and looking for more work on it. It is my most requested car for videos.
Great explanation, thanks a lot! The most detailed and useful I've seen so far. But I believe part number is not correct, it googles as air filter for X5. Just a heads up!
Yes you are correct I am so sorry for the confusion. I must have edited the wrong video in. My apologies. Here is the correct part number. 64-31-6-835-405
Was trying to do this on my f46, same procedure but I couldn't get the door off cos a plastic module was kinda in the way stopping it from going up and out. It was too much of an awkward angle to go any further and it's freezing outside so it's a job for another day haha
Thanks for the video. Can you perhaps tell me where the blower motor is located? Driver's side or passenger's side? And can it be removed from inside or outside?
A good access point will be from the evap temperature sensor. You will see it in that area it’s a two pin connector. I pull mine out and inject the cleaner through that hole. Just follow the instructions on your cleaner.
Hi there! Why does my x1 look so different? The housing for the filter is not there and generally the side u are showing is totally different. I’m still unable to find it after removing the 2 panels!
Don't mess with the driver's (left, for the US) side of the car. If you unscrew the hood release, you're in for $500 to have the cable assembly replaced.
@@friendlymechanic9778 Thank you. We undid the side panel but couldn't find the filter. We will try again and remove the top panel as well. BMW charges $400 to change it 😳

Jeez $347 is steep and over priced for a filter replacement. Good thing you did it yourself!!

Mine was the same way…backwards!!!🤦♂️toward the engine! 🤬
Best description on the net. After that it was very easy to replace the filters.
Was worried this might be tough, but this video is the quintessential resource. Ten minutes and $25 later I’m good to go. New subscriber.

Excellent Video, I would have never found the filter if you hadn't posted it and shown exactly how to remove and replace it. Than k You!

Of course BMW would have 2 cabin air filters 🤦🏽♂️. Great video. Very well detailed and explained.
Great TUTORIAL..this is not like any other any DYI video. Thank you for helping us BMW owners that enjoy working in our cars...
Thanks for this! Part that took the longest was trying to out the filter access door back on... backwards (until I watched this again).
