I just bought these. An absolutely incredible set of wide variety of sounds! I was interested in the background of who made these sounds, and here I am. 🥰
@@hoffonoffoThank you so much! Yes it’s us Libby and Marcel and we’re still out there recording. Thank you so much for your support! 🎉
hello sir, can I use the sound for my youtube content purposes? @@FreeToUseSounds
I hardly leave comments but this video is genuinely inspiring and it empowers small beginner creators like me. I do have a Zoom H1 from a decade ago and would like to use it more now to explore what are my passions in this creative journey and not worry about how to make a living out of it but let it come naturally. Thank you for sharing your story!
I know right?
Thank you so much!!
I agree with you, the world is brighter when we do things out of passion.
Exactly right. For myself photography changed the way I see the world around me.
You are so inspiring! I am new at recording (H1n) and I am learning a lot with you! Greatings from Brazil! Hope to see you here!
I always carry a Zoom H1 in my backpack. It's a little beast and small so it is always with me. I first seen it being used to record Foley sounds for the Blade Runner 2049 movie in one of their behind the scenes videos. Yep that's right, the sound designers used it in the opening sequence of that movie to record the water boiling on the stove. The moment I seen the ZOOM logo I googled it and found one at my local store... I never ran so quick to get it. Since then I use it for work and side projects. Love your channel and great video :)
Oh wow! What a cool story :) It is definity a great recorder and I'm glad I have them always in my bag. :)
hey is the H6 can do everything that H1N can do? or do I need to buy both H6 and H1n?
Yo man... I've been a live sound engineer for over 15 years with the military, and definitely consider myself a bit of an audiophile. This video was absolutely awesome. I love your enthusiasm and encouragement. I have slept really well for years using rain noise, and this video is definitely inspiring me to get some field recording gear and go record my own soundscapes to share with other people that want really high quality ambient noise to sleep to, or study, or just have on. The poorly looped recordings just aren't cutting it. And with my knowledge in sound design and audio gear, I think I could do a bang up job!
If you had to start all over again, would you go with the Audio Technica stereo mic you spoke about? What's the market like for 3D sound nowadays?
Thanks again for sharing this with us. I really enjoyed it! Everything about it is top notch!
For sleeping, Owls and mountain wind soundscapes do it for me. But, you're right regarding poorly looped recordings.
THANKS! I've been distracted about my passions for about 40 years, now i'm 56 and consider not late to begin... i've got a project of creating audiovisual content but focusing a little bit more on audio... You helped to increase my motivation... again THANKS A LOT from Argentina!
Very inspirational story! I started using the Zoom f6 because of you and love it! Enjoy Reykjavik.
Ah that is so cool! Yes the Zoom F6 is a great field recorder and super cool that you enjoy it the same then I do. Lets make sure someday we are on a recording session together.

Ordinarily sound is the first and last thing we hear in life and has ALWAYS fascinated me, I am hyper sensitive to it. I am SO inspired by you and your enthusiasm that I am going to use what I've got already and get better at sound recordings - I have been a photographer for over 15 years and the two passions can thrive together! Thank you for your channel and sharing your passion!
Thank you so much! So glad to hear that...
Thanks for the inspiration.
I got an Olympus sound recorder and am still using it to record birds sounds. Now I like to do more videos of wildlife but because of the noise from my Len's Auto focus, I recently bought a Rode video mic to do a better wildlife sound recording rather than the camera's built-in microphone.
Such a great video! Wonderful work Libby! Smooth camera work, interesting wide and closeup shots, and some fun cinematic sound effects. Fun titles and graphics too! Thanks to both of you for putting this inspiring retrospective together.
Thank you so much Scott! We had so much fun making this video and knowing that and others enjoyed it gives us the motivation to create more. :)
I started with the Zoom H4n and it lasted me ten years before I felt the need to upgrade. It's still my backup recorder and hasn't ever failed. I'm surprised you haven't sold your older gear to keep the packing light.
Hi Ken! These Zoom products are overall great and the Zoom H6 went with us trough so many countries already. No issues. I sold the F4 and a couple of microphones along the way. The SAAM is back in the US and the parabolic dish has a microphone failure and is in Paris.
Thank you, sir!
Our pleasure!
I am currently a final year student studying for a Bachelor of Arts special degree in Mass media. One of my favorite subject is sound editing. We learn a lot about media management, media history, philosophy, sociology political economy, critical thinking, anthropology and media theorys. But i love productions. I have been researching a lot about sound design. I watch and learn from your videos. thanks for inspiring me. ❤ from 🇱🇰
That is so nice hear. Good luck with your bachelor degree!
Thank you sir ❤
AT4025 is good if you like XY stereo. I'm more of a MS guy, so the Shure VP88 mid-side stereo condenser mic is my go to stereo field recording mic. You can use the included width matrix, but I like recording M-S hard L/R so I can matrix in post. Fabulous mic. Not cheap. But worth it if you are as totally into field recording as you obviously are! A good budget alternative to the VP88 is the Zoom H2n field recorder that has built in MS as well as surround recording.
Love the passion in your eyes ;) Can you recomend what kind of mic should I use to create no talking bushcraft videos? It should record the sounds of nature and at the same time the sounds of putting tent, cooking food, etc
That means you should look into an omnidirectional microphone
@@FreeToUseSounds Thanks.
And do you think it's a good idea to use recorder like zoom h6 instead of mic and put it on my camera like an on-camera mic?
@@bear_on_a_bike You can do however you like. If you only have a Zoom H6 and you don't want to invest in different gear just try it out.
I like your work. Greetings from Greece!
Thank you so much!!
great and inspiring video! Thanks! Amateur recording natural sounds here on H5 and I'm obsessed too!!
I just bought an old used Zoom H1. It’s in good shape, looking forward to record some sounds with it :)

Hope Zoom sends you the new H8 to test. Would be great to see how you’d put it to use.
Oh yes I already requested the recorder and hope that it arrives. But shipping to Iceland can take a while. Still waiting for a package since over a month.
Hi Mike. Not sure if you saw it but I made a recorder about H8 :)
'just subscribed. Your story is so encouraging, I loved it. I have a zoom H5 and it's been my first great investment when I started making videos. I still have a lot to learn though. Cheers!

Awesome message. Just bought myself a Tascam DR-05X to start recording sounds for my electronic tunes I make. This is really what I need to see to get myself out of a slump of drinking heavily 3-4 times a week and struggling to make my music because often I'm recovering from a big night out. Thank you, this is very uplifting, and I totally agree with what you say about passion.
this is inspiring..and i just have this item on my amazon list now about to purchase. i love sounds too but i don't know how to capture until this video came across..thanks

My pleasure Laurent.
Nice video! I just got my H1n recently and am loving playing around with it. I never knew I liked recording sound so much.
Question. In your early days when you were getting bird sounds and other outside sounds with your H1, were you using any kind of wind or pop filter, or were you just using the H1 in its birthday suit?
I'm finding that it's VERY susceptible to wind/breezes so might need to do something about that :)
Hi Tom. Oh yes I used a windjammer. You have to buy them external. You can go with the Zoom Universal Windjammer what is a little big but works or you checkout Rycote Mini Windjammer For Zoom H1n. That should help. :)
One time I was recording the sounds of boats, and big ships going into, and out of the San Pedro Harbour. I set the recorder on top of a low flat rock, facing the harbour.
On the playback, about fifteen or twenty minutes into the recording, I heard the sound of some kind of animal snffing the recorder!
I think it might have been a skunk.
Yo that comment was it for me!
Liebe Grüße. I film at very loud (120+ dB) festivals where it gets hot, wet, a bit rough etc. I'm desperately looking for a better way to record the audio because it's sometimes so loud that the iPhone mic distorts or I need a backup recording method to place somewhere away from the camera, or to talk into. It needs to be light and relatively rugged. Any ideas? Mfg.
Just to see true passion in someone is a real pleasure. This was a great presentation and the photos from your travels as well as the video clips just polished it off perfectly.
I am a 30 year stock photography veteran and only have a H1N for audio, but now...... well the new adventure begins...... Thank you both for this.
That’s awesome!!
I really loved this video. It's a really heartwarming honesty to admit that you have to start with nothing and no experience and build your way up.
I'm trying to launch my own project of field recordings, would you have any advise on what equipment to buy or what brands to lean towards?
Hi! Thank you so much for watching and your question. I made a video about the AT 4025 and if you haven’t watched it yet? I talk about this. I wish I would like to have this one, back in the days when I started out with recording.
Wow I wasn’t even looking for this video, but it’s great! I was actually dabbing with the idea of doing something like this for my local area.
Go for it!!
Nice video and tips please next time do not keep on recording, your voice, music and crenaky sounds over and over while you are talking is really noisy and persistent!
Thanks for the tip!
Nice vídeo, nice vídeo, tks for share!
your videos are a source of inspiration. I'd like to ask you for advice. if you want to start building my own database, a personal sound library, can you suggest me how to organize the library, name the files, create a sheet containing all the information on the audio recording (place, equipment) to locate the files etc. ? having already dealt with all this, can you suggest the choice that was best for you? thank you very much

Beautiful your channel,
I would like to know at 34 seconds there is a pouch bag. What model is it? I started buying equipment: zoom h8, rode ntg5 and a boompole pro.
Now I need to figure out where to zoom in a practical and comfortable way. What model is that bag in your video? What do you recommend? Isn't there a risk that you can move the zoom knobs?
Hello Salvatore,
I hope you're doing great! This is the K-Tek bag you asked about and is specifically designed for the Zoom F6. Unfortunately, it won't be compatible with the H8.
@@FreeToUseSounds ah ok thank you so much. For zoom h8 what you advice? I saw in your site , you have also H8.
@@salvatoretornitore7219 Oh yes I had this one but never used it with a bag. Did you look into the Zoom PCH-8 Protective Case? I just did a quick look at it.
@@FreeToUseSounds yes I saw and then what can I combine it with? how is it attacked for practical use?
hi. could you please tell which exactly battery model we can use with Zoom F6? i know its Sony L... but which exactly? thank You
Hi! I use a powerbank 10000mAh or the regular Ladda batteries from IKEA with it. Nothing else.
Field recording is one of the most wonderful things because you go outside and suddenly become SO MUCH MORE aware of your environment. I have been doing this since i had a little Cassette recorder with stereo mics and at first i only did it to have my own Foley Sounds for my own audio- and film projects. But it really has an effect on you too. In 2009 i had gotten a little second hand MiniDisc walkman from Sony and took it everywhere i went and recorded things with a little T.Bone ST40 stereo mic and often listened to these recordings when i was laying in bed. I loved that and also the process of recording any kind of environment. You hear things differently and it almost becomes an out of body experience where time somehow doesn't exist anymore. The best thing is when you turn these recordings into an audio story and basically going on a journey with your eyes closed and only with your ears.
I stumbled across your channel just now. I’ve always been obsessed with recording sounds, and you have inspired me to further this passion of recording sounds.
Same here ,have been sound designing for a while now..stumbled upon this video inspires me to venture in field recording
Hi!
After 3 years, do you still recommend H1n to beginners? Isn't there any newer alternative out there?
In a review I saw the following points about H1n, what do you think about them?
- The firmware update (to be downloaded from the Zoom homepage) is an older version than the version already installed in the device (!).
- The often criticised rattling of the volume buttons on the sides has still not been resolved.
- The hand-touch noise attenuation is also missing (you can hear every smallest finger tapper. If possible, you should place the part on a sative or lay it down - although it is referred to as a “handheld”).
Who cares because its only 50-60 bucks. If you want quality then get something in a higher price range.
@@TheChameleon2008 $60 for H1n with money for mics or $190 H6 and maybe one $50 mic
How do you prevent static noises when recording in the city? Having this issue with Zoom H1N
As I mentioned on another video, I don’t have static noise.
@@CosmoSkerry Yeah there must be something wrong with the device. Record the static and send them the file.
Thanks for this video...very inspirational...makes me nearly want to quit my day job and become a sound recordist!! The first time I tried to record a sound effect it was of a bunch of chickens...we went to a farm..recorded the sounds..drove home....played it back and discovered horrible pops and wind noise! I thus discovered that wind protection was a thing...and so was using headphones to monitor! Well done...I love the story...and that 'learn as you go' approach!
Thanks for watching and great story about the chickens :) wind protection is very important in order to get a clean audio.

To be fair, the Zoom H1N is a good field recorder. I sold my original H1 and bought a H5. I ended up buying my wife a H1N as she wanted a recorder/pc mic/video mic and the H1N ticked all the boxes for her needs. Love your content.
Hi Jake! I absolutely agree with you. We used the recorder for this as well and still do. Thank you for watching!

What a great story Sir! Based on your video on the AudioTechnica BP4025 , I've just order that mic to compliment my BP4029 stereo shotgun.
