The cartridge feature is the thing that sold me on this. A sleep mode can be pretty good, but it still drains your battery (unless you're playing on a vita, which has a sleep function powered by magic). The cartridge mode with auto save/load states is just perfect.
What is it about the Vita that achieves this?! Seriously, my Vita is over 10 years old and still runs off the original battery! Standby battery black magic.
Wow, the whole reason I wanted to switch to this OS is because I tried making an Earthbound menu theme on my own but it wasn't quite working how I imagined on the Takiiiii OS. So, I downloaded this and added the themes package an guess what I found? Exactly what I wanted. No effort necessary.

I am comforted by the fact that you have not encountered this problem. Yeah I think you're right, it's probably an earlier build of onion from his video. It could also maybe have something to do with the brand of SD card. Hard to say, I just know it works fine for me!
Onion OS is great and it’s updated all the time , it has lots of great themes as well, the ability to adjust the gamma level and make the screen really crispy without being washed out is reason enough to get it on your miyoo mini.
If you love Mario Land 2 there’s a fan done DX version where they’ve added full colour making it basically a GB Colour game. It’s well worth checking out as its awesome.
I've been on a GB kick lately because I recently modded my DMG for the modern age, clear shell and all. But I wanted something tiny to fit in my pocket, like the GBA micro, and this looks perfect especially after the CFW. Thanks for sharing, subbed!
Welcome! And yeah, this is definitely the best mini pocket friendly Gameboy there is. I LOVED the original Bitboy because of its form factor and pocketability. This is the next evolution, it's better in every way. This will be a hard one to top!

Ha! I just tried it for fun on my gaming PC and there was tons of slowdown. Just a crap game. But it shouldn't stutter in the audio. I bet it'd take a handheld that can run Gamecube before we'll get full performance on this ROM :P
@@TechDweeb when I was a kid my mom didn't allow violent games. My dad did though, so I still knew about and played them. But where I lived most of the time it was GameCube and GBA only. I got pretty acquainted with GBA FPS games as a result. Doom II and Ecks vs Sever are the real kings, most others were basically unplayable on original hardware, lol.
Ecks vs Sever YES! I played that one. On the GBA. And also the Serious Sam. I didn't have Duke Advance though, I had that on the PC. I was an FPS NUT back then. I didn't have a good gaming PC but I played them anyways. At like 160p and 10fps :P . Teenage TechDweeb's head would have exploded at the tech we all have now in our pockets.

Hi! Does this guide still works on the new Miyoo Mini v2 that was released this April? I just ordered mine and the seller told me that I will be receiving the new one with the new battery, screen, and updated firmware. Does that mean I could just skip everything and go straight to installing the Onion OS? What I mean is can I skip the hard part of risking my unit from bricking by updating it to the latest manufacturer firmware?
Yes I think so. Just check out which firmware is installed when you get it and make sure that it's the latest. You can check that under the settings menu under the device info section

So I transferred everything from the original crappy SD card to a new faster Sandisk SD. I would like to download Onion for my Miyo mini and don’t want to mess anything up. In everyone’s videos they start completely fresh with the SD. Would I be able to just download onion OS onto my SD with all my roms, saves, and bios files all already on the card. Or will the new OS download damage or delete them?
it's a great software, but what I just don't understand is why it's so slow in searching for games, it scrolls them very slowly, I don't think it's just a low ram problem because with the original firmware the games scroll much faster. If I had a folder with thousands of games inside ,it takes me a week to go through them all!!They've updated everything in the onion os, but they still haven't solved this problem !!
I'm confused. I'm not having the issue you describe. My game lists are huge, and can scroll through them fine. I use the L1 + R1 bumpers to advance a page at a time, and I can quickly navigate the list on all my systems. I can get to any game I want in a matter of seconds. Yours isn't working like that?
Is it normal that the Miyoo makes sounds when saving or shutting down? It's sounds like a HDD sound but I thougt the Miyoo has no moving parts inside. 🤷🏻♂
I'm going to make a video about retroarch on the mini, but to answer your question, in your situation what you need to do after you set your controls, in the "overrides" section of the quick menu you need to save your "core overrides" if you want those controls to be saved for the entire SNES core, or just the "game overrides" if you only want those controls on this specific game.
It's so much better now. That was my main gripe with this device before, and it's completely fixed. It's actually kind of baffling that they shipped it with the settings that they did.
Oh that's strange. Not sure why that would be. My only suggestion would be to re-do the OnionOS install process. You won't need to update the firmware on the Mini, just the Onion OS install. That would be much easier than trying to troubleshoot or manually add the Theme switcher.
If you're starting from scratch, you can use a new SD card, update the MiYoo firmware, and then wipe the card and then install Onion OS. You don't need the card that came with the device at all. You could also try MiniUI. That's going to be my next vid :)
@@CallumHurley with onion, on occasion the gen 2 game will crash at start up. This can be remedied by holding the power button to go back to the games list and starting then exiting 1 or 2 other games that aren't G/S/C. This issue also affects pokemon crystal rom hacks. Using expert mode to chose a different core fixes this issue entirely, but the other gameboy color cores look considerably worse. The stock core looks and preforms so well that I consider the issue to be an inconvenience at worse. However, using the cartridge mode for these games isn't an option. Hopefully it will be fixed in a future update but, time will tell.
I'm having trouble with GBA and Lynx after installing. When trying to boot games, I get kicked back to the game list. I copied the System folder from Retroarch in the original MicroSD to the new install, but still it doesn't work.
It sounds like something got messed up after install, it should work fine out of the gate. I'd suggest redoing the Onion install (not the Miyoo update though, just Onion).
Very strange. Can you try another GBA emulator? (you can enable them like I showed in the video). If you find another GPA emulator works, you can use that instead (and you can swap out which emulator is the default).
Why it want work for me? I tried with my laptop so i have to download with my i cloud and then i tries to switch the miyoo update to my USB stick but it doesnt funktion ! Someone know why?
Sounds like an issue with your computer file management. You need to download the zip and then extract the files and folder to the root level of your SD card. If you're having troubles doing that on your computer then I'd suggest using a different computer. It should be straightforward.
Nah. It's just not powerful enough, so even if you could get it to run there wouldn't be any games that would actually run well. The Miyoo Mini is only good for eveything up to PS1.

Yes you can remove a console after adding it, just move or delete the folder on the SD card for the emulator. Not sure about the Neo Geo games though, my set seems to work fine. I'm pretty sure mine is the set that I also used on my 280v as well. Are there different ROM sets for Neo geo? I will have to do some testing to figure out what's up with that.

GBA on the Mini is great, a few titles will give you stutters like the Duke Nukem game I showed but 99% will run problem free. And the scaling looks great on this screen too which is the most important thing for me.
Do you know if it's possible to play arcade WWF Superstars on Mini? I've tried to use various Roms online and it hasn't worked. Wrestlefest works great but I really like WWF Superstars too. What am I doing wrong?
You'll need to find the correct version of the rom that will be compatible with the Mini. I can't link you to the file, but search for "MAME 0.235 ROMs (Merged)" and you'll find a reddit post with a link to the archive. You can download just the one rom you need from there. I tried it and it worked. The performance will be better if you use the Mame2003+ core btw.
@@TechDweeb I installed some Neo Geo games from that same Mame directory into arcade folder and those games didn't work. Also Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo didn't work either. WWF Superstars and Final Fight worked. What's wrong with other games?
I need help. Just updated my Mini to OnionOS ver 3.8.3 last night. Everything seems fine except my NES, SuperNes and Genesis consoles all shows the Japanese games and not the US library. I don't care for Japanese games. I need the US games library to show. It was fine before. What can I do to fix this?
You'll need to move all the games you want into the proper folders in the /Roms directory, those are the folders that are used by default in the games browser. My device only came with Japanese NES roms, I had to add my own US roms.
@@TechDweeb My SD card already has Roms for US games in right folder and it was working before this update. Can it be transferring process mixed it up. Basically I will now delete, copy and paste into opposite folders? Or can I redirect OnionOS to the correct path via RetroArch ?
@@kevtn8 You CAN point it to the correct path in retroarch, but that won't work for your games browser. You CAN point it to the correct path by editing the Onion OS config files, but it would be 10x easier just to move your NES roms to the Roms/FC/ folder instead (and move the japanese roms that are in there to a different folder if you want to save them for some reason).

The gba itself ran duke nukem at like 12-15 fps. So, if anything these handhelds are now running it *better* lol.

It's much slower in favourites.
It should move quick in the dedicated game folders.

Mine does a quick vibrate at it powers down. Maybe there's something up with your rumble motor?
Button mapping and hotkey mapping on snes wont save on mine. It always goes back to default every time i turn the device off

Theme switcher App is missing on my Onion os v3.9.2. How do I get it?

They do, but you'll need to download new screenshots at a specific size. I'm going to make a tutorial on how to do this using Skraper software.

I can't link you to the file, but search for "MAME 0.235 ROMs (Merged)" and you'll find a reddit post with a link to the archive. You can download just the one rom you need from there. I tried it and it worked. The performance will be better if you use the Mame2003+ core btw.
@@TechDweeb I installed some Neo Geo games from that same Mame directory into arcade folder and those games didn't work. Also Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo didn't work either. WWF Superstars and Final Fight worked. What's wrong with other games?
I need help. Just updated my Mini to OnionOS ver 3.8.3 last night. Everything seems fine except my NES, SuperNes and Genesis consoles all shows the Japanese games and not the US library. I don't care for Japanese games. I need the US games library to show. It was fine before. What can I do to fix this?
You'll need to move all the games you want into the proper folders in the /Roms directory, those are the folders that are used by default in the games browser. My device only came with Japanese NES roms, I had to add my own US roms.
@@TechDweeb My SD card already has Roms for US games in right folder and it was working before this update. Can it be transferring process mixed it up. Basically I will now delete, copy and paste into opposite folders? Or can I redirect OnionOS to the correct path via RetroArch ?
@@kevtn8 You CAN point it to the correct path in retroarch, but that won't work for your games browser. You CAN point it to the correct path by editing the Onion OS config files, but it would be 10x easier just to move your NES roms to the Roms/FC/ folder instead (and move the japanese roms that are in there to a different folder if you want to save them for some reason).
@@TechDweeb Thanks so much. Ok I'll do that. Onion 3.8.3 is crazy nice. There's now boxart or game image on same screen. Also the overall performance on some systems is better too. This handheld has been amazing thanks to people at Onion.

Great review in terms of content. But the dweeb voice that sounds like a continually sick school boy is very detracting. Had to switch the volume off and use captions instead. Can you use a normal voice instead....?
