OMG it's already 7 years now, but this video is still helpful!!!!! As a landscape architecture student, I didn't find some tutorials to teach how to modeling on an terrian! but your video really shows clear and helps me a lot !!!! Thanks!!!

OH MY GOODNESS YOU SAVED MY LIFE!!! Thank you so much for this very detailed video!!! (Architecture student XD)

Yes you can. Just make sure the stacked contours are hollow or you will get a projected curve for the bottom surface too.
In terms of splitting road and terrain, you can actually go straight to splitting in the top view.

How can you smooth the roads out so that there are no ripples in them and then grade the topgraphy so that it nicely insects with the road?

You'll need to smooth/relax the topography in Rhino.
I don't know of a simple way of doing this but if your goal is smooth geometry and you don't care about the precision - I believe that you can use the Drape command (with few control points) and drape a simplified plane onto your topography, then repeat the steps in this video.

@@rubenborup I want to be able to cut a smooth road or path through the surface and create nice graded embankments around it. Its nearly impossible to do it by playing around with points. Rhino needs to help you calculate/smooth the transitions between the original topography and the way it intersects the road or path.
      Something like this....

    hi..
i have drafted a road profile (in cad) which in some places the width increases & has curves and i have to build the road according to the elevation values of the road (it has diff. elevation values at each ends of the road).
I do not want to match the road profile to terrain face.
    Help me doing this?

Hi! Did you find any tutorial helping to achieve that? I'm in the same situation and God... All tutorials just -literally- project the roads to terrain, not actually adapt the road elevation to the terrain... I'd be really greatful to you If you can guide or show me where you find a solution. Thanks in advance.

Damm I can't select the mesh with the split command. The mesh is not lock

Hi Kevin, the split command only works with NURBS geometry. You can make a NURBS version of your mesh with the "drape" command (use the top view). Hope this helps.
      /Ruben.
