Should we do the other tracks from this album? If they are like this, I HAVE TO HEAR THEM LOL. This was pure evolution. I was NOT expecting to hear how mature, refined, and focused this effort was. I don't know how he does it, BUT HE GOT BETTTER!? Wow, man. He ways going so many places... well let me know. Should we finish this album or something else? Let me know here.
Might as well do the rest, but also check out "First Rays Of The New Rising Sun". It was also released after he died but has some of these songs plus a few more
That basically gives you 3/4 of the double album he was working on, plus a few other (mostly good) tracks. That album would have been at least as good as Electric Ladyland, and he would have got better from there, given that he’d only just got his own world class recording studio, which he barely got the chance to start using. We missed out on some of the best music ever.
I'm one of the many people who requested "Pali Gap". Never seen a reactor do this song. Somehow it's a Hendrix masterpiece that is hardly known and gets overlooked, maybe because it was released after his passing.
I bought this posthumous release when it first came out (for my 18th birthday present in Oct 1971) and I have always loved this album. The studio tracks…“Dolly Dagger”, “Room Full of Mirrors”, “Pali gap”, “Earth Blues” and “Look Over Yonder” showed the new and exciting path Hendrix was going and it was so sad he never got to follow it…we were sadly deprived of some excellent music. Then the live “Hear My Train A’comin’ “ and “Hey Baby (new Rising Sun) ” are two of my favourite live releases from him…a stunning album and very underated. Check out the whole thing man…it’s been blowin’ my mind ever since I bought it.
Good golly Miss Dolly, WE NEED MORE COWBELL!!! Scared my daughter cuz I was freaking out from the first note of Hendrix Thursday. OMG...not possible to love him more. All those notes just flowing from his fingers, incomparable. Great job as always, Lee....it seems you like him, lol. Blessings and peace.
Dolly Dagger was a track about his girlfriend Devon Wilson and he was planning to put it out as a single. At one point you can hear him say "watch out Devon - give me a little bit of that Heaven" - click on this to hear it 4:30 . Pali Gap is just beautiful.
I was a Hendrix fan from 1967 onward. I saw him live in Texas in 1968. You can imagine the shock o' hearin' that he up 'n died in 1970. Listenin' to The Cry O' Love 'n Rainbow Bridge, both released shortly after his death were a bitter sweet experience, a joyous revelation to hear this incredible new music coupled with the sadness in knowin' he had left us 'n these were his farewell messages. Belly Button Window is a perfect example...
Rainbow Bridge is my favourite Jimi album. Earth Blues, Room Full of Mirrors, Look Over Yonder and Hey Baby are all fantastic, just like these two tracks. And Hear My Train a Comin’ is one of his best live cuts. The Cry of Love album is almost as good. Really emphasises what we lost when you hear what he was recording just before he left us.
1983 went to the mall as we did, bought a hendrix album, got dropped off at the niagara river, old vietnam vets partying , that kinda vibe. Take the album to dudes house where he has a fucking wolf as a pet. Shit was wild back then. But yes this song came outta nowhere, love it.
after the Hendrix family acquired the rights to his music, Eddie Kramer remastered both the Cry of Love and Rainbow Bridge material (and some unreleased tracks) into the First Rays of the New Rising Sun and South Saturn Delta releases. The former following Jimi's outline for his next album and remastered by Eddie, and the latter consisting of some great unreleased tunes, studio tracks of songs they had previously only played live, and alternate takes of other songs. Both are great and show Jimi's next direction was going to incredible.
@L33Reacts Eddie is so great lol there's these amazing interviews where he breaks the songs down piece by piece at the control board it's pretty amazing. those deserve their own series and nobody's ever reacted to one of those interviews.
@L33Reacts I'm playing the album at work right now and it's just so ultimately heart breaking the world didn't get to hear it at that time. The whole album sounds like it could've come out today and been a hit.
Still no Johnny B Goode from Berkeley? Would be great with Hear My Train A Comin' from Berkeley as well and it is actually on this album as the final track.
@L33Reacts That is sad. There are other people who have reacted to that Johnny B Goode video. But I am not familiar with the rules of blocking. Yes, Berkeley was amazing.
@@L33Reacts Berkeley may be blocked because it is also a movie but if you do the audio off the albums it might be easier. Johnny B Goode is on the Hendrix in the West album - or there are now 2 CDs of Berkeley available. These tracks are on the first show CD. Worth getting those CDs.
My cousin and I each bought the album at the same time. We then went to my house to play it on my parents' killer stereo. We cranked it up to 10 and rattled the windows. Early 70's memories. My cousin has since departed. Thanks for the memory.
Great great stuff! Very perceptive comments, L33. Pali Gap was recorded as part of the jam that flowed on from the master take of Dolly Dagger. Part of what makes this 1970 era of his music so great is Billy Cox on bass. Cox was a long time friend from the pre-fame days and who never fought Hendrix for control--unlike frustrated guitarist and wanna-be band leader Noel Redding. Cox always knew how to support Jimi. Check out the stunning version of Hear My Train on this album--easily the best recorded version, IMHO. BTW Jimi was going to do a collaboration with the legendary arranger Gil Evans when Jimi died.
A short break down of the movie,,, the first half is some people getting ready/ setting up the Hendrix concert, then comes Jimi to talk to some of them for a while, then comes the Hendrix concert!! It is a lot better than how I described it! Great concert!! Everyone needs to check that out!!
I don't recall hearing that extraordinary tune Pali Gap before! Loved your reaction; maybe my favorite "jam session" playing by Jimi, and they were all killing it.
There's a few recordings of Pali Gap, I read JIMI did Pali Gap because the different speeds of the wind blowing through Pali Gap! PALI GAP IS MY ALL TIME FAVORITE SONG BY JIMI PERIOD !!! SICK ASS KICK ASS GUITAR PLAYING !!! A VERY BEAUTIFUL SONG!!🐐🎸🔥😢❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😍😍😍😍😍
If I remember at all correctly there was going to be a film of Hendrix in Hawaii, based on a concert he did there (on Maui?), and at least some of the Rainbow Bridge tracks were going to be part of the soundtrack. Pali Gap is wonderful, isn't it? I think it's named after a location in Hawaii. Maybe I'll look it up and edit this... edit: Rainbow Bridge is indeed a film which relates to Jimi's 1970 visit to Hawaii but it includes only 15 minutes of the concert in Maui and none of it is on this album. An album of the concert music was only released a few years ago, as well as a documentary about the shenanigans involved, entitled Music, Money, Madness. PS: I wondered about this Juma Edwards on percussion... wasn't his name Juma Santos? Okay, it is in fact same guy as in the Woodstock band.
Rumor was Jimi heard Billy Cox playing the 4 note bell ringing of the Big Ben clock in London on his bass. Jimi rushed up and asked him what it was he was playing.Jimi took those notes and sped up the playing
When I was a teen I heard that this song was inspired by Mick Jagger. Anyone else? Lots of intriguing word play, "Dolly DAGGER" "JAGGED edge", references to tongues... then toward the end, "Look at burnt out Superman, trying to shoot his dust off the sun."
The first song is the first Hendrix I’ve ever wanted to add to my listen-to playlist. Both songs were pleasurable. I enjoyed the more relaxed Jimi. …Jimi’s maybe doing a Ringo style artistry with his band mates…
Just love it!! Takes me straight back to my first Acid trip, teenage years early 70s!!! Yeah actually think this music was a revelation, it changed my perception, set me on a path, no regrets!!.....
Jimi passed quickly through the limits of Chas Chandler's idea of what would make him popular. His association with Eddie Kramer taught him how to use the studio as an instrument, as demonstrated on Axis, and Electric Lady Land. He became a public figure, which he kind of went along with through the Electric Church and Band of Gypsies days... Then he opened up into a new day and was ready to bring us something new... he had a new idea that he was jamming through, and recording those jams to use as a basis for new songs... and died.
So Rainbow Bridge is a movie that came out in 1971 I think. And this album is its original motion picture soundtrack. The movie is about Jimi Hendrix playing in Maui, Hawaii. I think he did two shows; not sure; going by memory here. Anyway, the soundtrack is studio versions of songs, some of which Hendrix played live in the movie. It's relation with the movie is mostly packaging. Hendrix in 1970 was being courted by jazz people like Miles Davis. I tend to think he would explore what his guitar could sound like in a jazz setting. Like what Jeff Beck did in the 70s. Though sounding nothing like what Jeff Beck did. Many young rock guitarist in the 60s matured and transitioned into jazz rock guitarists during the 70s.
Personal note: Aah…as I know this album so much, it is made to be listened fluidly from the beginning to end… without breaking 😢(But ‘Hear my Train A comin’ … Will knock you out like ‘Machine gun’ )
This is my second greatest Hendrix album. You should check out "Hear My Train" and "Hey Baby," and "Earth Blues" all from this album. Brilliant! You're right. This album is a mature, refined Jimi. The first album and this one and this one are absolutely amazing!
The Cox/Mitchell lineup is the best band Jimi had. And that comes from someone who absolutely loves Band of Gypsys and wishes that they had made a studio album. But Billy and Mitch both just knew Jimi and they locked in perfectly

“Rainbow Bridge” was a movie released in 1971 about the hippie culture in Hawaii. It has 17 minutes of Hendrix in concert.
