I love how *that* moment showed how Donna is still influencing the Doctor's actions to this day. Especially considering the callback to Donna's exit at the end of Series 9
Seeing Ten with Donna in that flashback was such a nice little addition. Made me genuinely emotional, such a great moments for both Donna and Ten's character development.

I think what ultimately ends up happening is that people's opinion of this episode ends up getting dragged down by the second half of the two-parter. I think this episode is pretty great, but I recall the second part kind of dragging and just seeming like kind of an unexciting payoff to the great set up that this episode provided. I believe it's also the case that this episode and the next one were actually written by different people, which probably didn't do anything to help that feeling of disjointedness between the first and second half.
@@Wolf6119 There's a bit of that i'm sure but I think NPE 94 has it right - plenty of fans fall into the confirmation bias/groupthink trap and don't seem to get that "everyone" [on your Tumblr] or "most" [commenters in a particular Reddit thread] doesn't _actually_ mean "everyone" or "most". The To Be Continued feels really weird in this episode. The story of the episode is over - it feels so obvious to just end it on this wistful note about an accidentally immortal girl, and then bring her back by surprise in the future. Instead the story's over, everything's wrapped up, it feels complete - and then 'TO BE CONTINUED' comes up and you're left going whaa? Now Ashildr returning isn't a surprise, and this episode ends on a weird note.
Was thinking that, in retrospect, it may have been more interesting had the Doctor met Ashildr later, and then met her again in the past and be forced with making a decision he’d known he already made, knowing at least part of the consequences of those actions (even if those consequences were just the next episode), and then had to decide whether to do it (again), for the first time. Even if the episodes were just flipped, it might have been more interesting. Say he meets Ashildr in the next episode and it’s a kind of River situation. She knows him, but he hasn’t met her yet. He realizes she’s basically immortal from reading her diary, and that it’s killing her, but never why or how. He then meets her in this episode and realizes he caused it by saving her. But can he do it again knowing the pain it causes her? Does he have an obligation to save a life if that life feels condemned for being saved? Will he somehow fracture time if he doesn’t? And then, of course, the weight of what happens later would feel even greater because it could have been entirely prevented. In fact, he had the chance to prevent it and didn’t.
Chronologically for the Doctor the next episode is after this one, I could be wrong due to watching it very little but as far as I know that's the case.
I love this episode, and its follow up. They are beautifully written, emotionally resonant stories that utilise a fascinating new character to delve deep into the soul of the Doctor, and understand his role in the universe and the consequences of his existence. This is what I watch Doctor Who for.
I think it’s a decent episode . The plot with The Mire isn’t all that interesting but I do enjoy the supporting cast ( including Ashildr) I love how they seed the idea of The Doctor being a tidal wave earlier and you see what that means later on and how he has affected Ashildr’s life . Also him recognizing where he got his face from and why is one of the best moments of Twelve’s run!!.
With the 'Babyspeak', don't forget the TARDIS translation circuit is more likely taking over in externalising and translating the baby's feelings, passing them to the Doctor who is handling the prose.
Doctor : “I am going to save her. If anyone has a problem with that, to hell with you.” 6 episodes later, when she kills Clara : “Well, that could have gone better”😂
one theory i've heard is that Capaldi's character in torchwood is a descendent of his character in Pompeii and when he killed himself and his family its the timeline compensating for Capaldi and his family surviving in Pompeii when they weren't meant to.
I liked this one, the next one is the one I'm MEH on. I know the point of next week's is how Ashildr is dealing with immortality, but the evil Thundercat... I just can't get past it.
I remember when a friend of mine and I watched the trailer for this series. Twelve’s “I’m the Doctor. And I save people!” earned an eye-roll from my friend. Upon my asking why, he said it was such a cheesy and generic line and it didn’t belong in Doctor Who. When I watched the episode for the first time, I called him and told him the line fit. He agreed, but it didn’t change his opinion too much. It wasn’t until years later, when I rewatched the Pompeii episode, that I remembered that Donna said “You’re the Doctor. You save people.” And now that friend and I have grown apart, and I won’t be able to just call him and tell him that line had a deeper meaning after all.
Does anybody wonder if Odin is actually the Doctor? That would mean Asgard is actually Gallifrey, and Susan is the daughter of Thor (maybe Sif is her mother?)
The one thing I don’t like about the episode is what you touched on. Captain Jack is immortal too. He doesn’t become a psychopath, especially if you accept that he is the face of bo. So, why does Ashidr (or however you spell it)?
Ugh, this episode made me stop watching Doctor Who for a few weeks. I don't know which annoyed me more, the fact that this alien species had a way to make somebody completely immortal, or that the Doctor, who just a few seasons ago was saying how nobody should be immortal that it's against nature just MADE somebody immortal...
1: the aliens have a way to heal their own, it just overdoes it with humans. 2: The point of this episode is how his opinion has changed on that, unless you think that characters can't change over the course of six or so seasons then fine.
@@jacobhogan3208 1 I sincerely doubt that's how it works or if that was even brought up in the show and isn't something that the viewers have to explain for themselves but lets assume thats true. Humanity eventually goes into space; strange that in n all those future human space civilizations they've never stumbled upon tech that makes them immortal. Strange tha the girl didn't find additional chips to starta whole immortal family. 2. It can, but if it is him changing his opinion and not writers fault, then its a change for WORSE, and it makes it even worse for me.
Characters can't change for the worse?? That's nuts. People are complicated, Time Lords even more so. The Doctor makes bad decisions sometimes. That just makes him an even more fascinating character to watch.
@@ABrecher Not saying they can't change for the worse, doesn't mean I have to like it. Especially when they make HUGE wrong choices. I'm gonna assume you know what happens next to her, right? He did his KNOWING full well the consequences, of what kind of torturous existance she would have. Also, when somebody is 2000 years old (actually, he is much older than that, in the books they revealed that the 8th Doctor lost count and started again; actually, they cleaned up the New Who mess that started in 1st season, when they said he was over 900 years old, he was older than that in the Classic series already), I find it very unlikely that he would suddenly change his mind about something so fundamendal as his view on life and death.
*Briefmortal11* I agree. It was completely unnecessary. And even spoiled it a little. It's almost as if they thought the audience was suddenly made up of exclusively 6-year-olds.
While I agree this episode is a good example of your argument I've run into people with similar arguments for different episodes that have been foolish, like how "face the raven is a one parter" or hell bent, etc
because the very next episode continues the plot of this episode just in a new time period and setting it could be argued that it is a two parter. Considering the similarly named titles i believe the intention is that it should considered a two parter much like flood episodes have similar titles.
I can't help but hate the episodes where it all feels like one great big pantomine. This one, Robot's of Sherwood, Return of Doctor Mysterio. How am I supposed to take the threat seriously if everyone acts like their part of some school play.
I definitely agree that Capaldi is better than his scripts. I used to hate the 12th doctor but after rewatching I have realised its not him as the doctor I hate its just most of the stories ya know?

"Like an episode of Scooby-Doo." Yup. "He's better than the scripts given to him." YUUUUUUUP! Easily Jamie Mathieson's weakest script. Nowhere close to Moffat's worst though. That's still coming.
@@grice478 In my opinion, Hell Bent. I've seen every surviving episode of the entire show, and while there are technically worse ones out there, it's the only one I actively hate.
Looks like they starting to share my opinion. Great actor, great doctor but mostly wasted on not so great scrips... half of them feel like they been written half way and the rest was improvised on the spot (like the golden arrow or moon egg episodes). This one was not so bad tho.
Really dont like how they made immortality so easy in this episode. Before its like you needed to be a timelord, or have a time vortex possessed person turn you into a fixed point. Now its just add a patch found inside every helmet of these random aliens as standard equipment =/

GoT was her first role actually (and easily the most iconic one).
One of Peter Capaldi's best story arcs, and one of my favorite 12th Doctor stories!
The Hybrid is so lame.
I think it’s a decent episode .
The plot with The Mire isn’t all that interesting but I do enjoy the supporting cast ( including Ashildr)
I love how they seed the idea of The Doctor being a tidal wave earlier and you see what that means later on and how he has affected Ashildr’s life .
Also him recognizing where he got his face from and why is one of the best moments of Twelve’s run!!.
Eric is waiting for a badass Capaldi. Chills!!
Love the flashback to ten in this episode
The doctor gets the regeneration he needs not the one he wants..
We're so close to the ending of this season. One of my favorite seasons ever cause of Capaldi
With the 'Babyspeak', don't forget the TARDIS translation circuit is more likely taking over in externalising and translating the baby's feelings, passing them to the Doctor who is handling the prose.
They need to remember to watch class after they finish this season
That was Mark Gattis (co-writer at that point, and Sherlocks brother in Sherlock)
He’s better than the scripts given him. Yup
"He excels at furrowing his eyebrows and saying some good-ass shit." Eric describing Capaldi in one sentence.
Maisie Williams my angel finally arrived ❤
As a Viking, she will never be able to go to Valhalla.
Doctor : “I am going to save her. If anyone has a problem with that, to hell with you.”
6 episodes later, when she kills Clara : “Well, that could have gone better”😂
I have waited for this episode reaction for so long😊
Clara is so fun I like the most in terms of companions
That effect in the scene of the extraction always reminds me of the movie 9
I definitely couldn't remember Jörmungandr's name, and I'm not sure it's even been a year since I last played God of War.
one theory i've heard is that Capaldi's character in torchwood is a descendent of his character in Pompeii and when he killed himself and his family its the timeline compensating for Capaldi and his family surviving in Pompeii when they weren't meant to.
That's not a theory, that was suggested by Russell T. Davies and then confirmed by Steven Moffat.
@@ConradLarsonGaming
when?
@@thewerewolff7248 I don't remember where, but that was definitely a thing. I think it was in an interview during Capaldi's casting.
Eric: And she'll stay looking that way for eternity
Shane:...Fuck yeah!
Nobody does intense staring into the camera like Maisie Williams.
baby genius got referenced, such a great thing
I remember this one and the follow up weren't terribly well-received, glad the boys seem to be having a lot of fun with it. :)
I liked this one, the next one is the one I'm MEH on. I know the point of next week's is how Ashildr is dealing with immortality, but the evil Thundercat... I just can't get past it.
@@firefly24601 I think it's one of the best episodes of S9 and the show....UNTIL the cat shows up.
6:11 What the heck is that blue thing on the desk right next to the Tardis?! *_And why is it here?!_*
Beebo!
"Reversing the polarity of the neutron flow" doesn't mean anything, it was a gimmick of the 3rd Doctor !
What is Calvin watching on RUclips? 👀🤣 Great discussion btw
Please react to Class after this season.
I WAS SO EXCITED TO SEE ARYA STARK LOL
So few people ever get the “noggin the nog” reference
My dog is named after Ashildr.
A good Viking movie "Valhalla Rising" react to i
didnt jack die as the face of boe?

what about alien?
It always bothered me that this self-contained story has "To Be Continued"
*Briefmortal11* I agree. It was completely unnecessary. And even spoiled it a little.
It's almost as if they thought the audience was suddenly made up of exclusively 6-year-olds.
While I agree this episode is a good example of your argument I've run into people with similar arguments for different episodes that have been foolish, like how "face the raven is a one parter" or hell bent, etc
it doesn't deserve a two parter
because the very next episode continues the plot of this episode just in a new time period and setting it could be argued that it is a two parter. Considering the similarly named titles i believe the intention is that it should considered a two parter much like flood episodes have similar titles.
I bet it's a Jojo reference
I can't help but hate the episodes where it all feels like one great big pantomine. This one, Robot's of Sherwood, Return of Doctor Mysterio. How am I supposed to take the threat seriously if everyone acts like their part of some school play.
BLIND WAVE, please react new trailer movie called JUST MERCY. Starring Michael B Jordan, Brie Larson & Jamie Foxx.
I definitely agree that Capaldi is better than his scripts. I used to hate the 12th doctor but after rewatching I have realised its not him as the doctor I hate its just most of the stories ya know?
Hey guys what's up..hey you really have to react to NETFLIX show...Money Heist ... Great show...reported as Netflix most watched show...3 seasons with a 4th coming in 2020..really good
"Like an episode of Scooby-Doo." Yup.
"He's better than the scripts given to him." YUUUUUUUP!
Easily Jamie Mathieson's weakest script. Nowhere close to Moffat's worst though. That's still coming.
Which one was Moffat's worst?
@@grice478 In my opinion, Hell Bent. I've seen every surviving episode of the entire show, and while there are technically worse ones out there, it's the only one I actively hate.
The production quality of this episode is fucking appaulling compared to the others of the season
Nice Episode, but the VIKING Setting should be used better... also i hated this "Baby" Talk
1: I get what you mean I thought that with let's kill Hitler even if i think it's good here.
2: that's been a thing for a long time.
Looks like they starting to share my opinion. Great actor, great doctor but mostly wasted on not so great scrips... half of them feel like they been written half way and the rest was improvised on the spot (like the golden arrow or moon egg episodes). This one was not so bad tho.
*neat*
Neat
😊
This is the only ep I remember with this doctor
I don't even know how that's possible.
Not even his first or last one?
@@jacobhogan3208 nah xD, missed quite a few tbf
I Hate the Cgi in this episode
Really dont like how they made immortality so easy in this episode. Before its like you needed to be a timelord, or have a time vortex possessed person turn you into a fixed point. Now its just add a patch found inside every helmet of these random aliens as standard equipment =/
That doesn't sound very easy at all.
Those stupid horned helmets really annoyed me.
