Yep, the dichotomy between when he started "playing The Doctor", and later on when he "WAS The Doctor" is kind of striking upon re-watch. Makes me wish Colin Baker had had a real chance at a third series instead of "Trial of a Time Lord". There's definitely connective tissue between their portrayals.
I'm sure someone has said this but Capaldi wanted the sonic glasses for a bit so that poor kids could dress up and be the doctor cause sunglasses are a lot cheaper than a sonic toy
Danii Decay it’s also why his outfits are both very iconic but also super simple. He knew kids liked to dress up as the doctor and wanted them to be able to do the same with just a dark sweater and a jacket or a t shirt and hoody vs a tweed jacket with a fez or a pin stripe suit
Yet more reasons to love this man as the Doctor. All the wonderful videos he has made in character for children and the w\awesome video he made for the newlyweds.... This man gets what it is to be the Doctor!
Something I always thought was cool about this flashback is that The Doctor was 900ish during Pompeii and is over 2000 in this episode so to him that would have happened over a thousand years ago! Probably why it took him so long to figure it out
Peter Capaldi was almost the 11th Doctor and the explanation about his face was actually RTD's idea that Moffat asked if he could use for this storyline.
You could be right! He very well could have been considered for 8 or 9 but the idea that he chose the face was definitely a remnant from a 10th Doctor story. I know he had been a favorite to be the Doctor long before 12.
Peter Capaldi was asked to audition for the 8th Doctor movie, but he declined because he felt it had a lot of American influences instead of being more British. As far as being cast as the 11th Doctor is concerned, Moffat has said that Capaldi briefly came to his mind when they were casting for the 11th Doctor, but he didn't feel like the right choice to follow David's swashbuckling laddish Doctor. Plus Matt blew them away with his audition. It was only when they were casting for the 12th Doctor that Moffat felt more certain in his choice of having Capaldi as the Doctor, because he wanted to have someone very drastically different from Matt and David's Doctor.
this episode is hella underrated in my book - it's funny and creative and self-aware and the ending works really well imo... honestly based on this Jamie Mathieson could be a pretty great show runner
There was an episode list released at some point before Capaldi's first season aired that had the title "The Face of Pompeii". Seems like they scrapped the idea for that episode but rolled it into this one.
In Amy`s words: Kid, this is were it gets complicated... Great Season so far! I don`t know others, but I like Clara wanting to be a Doctor, not just a companion. It`s what Missy said at the end of Series 8, she is a control freak, and a smart a$$ (well, I say that...). But she`s adorable! And Peter Capaldi is getting better and better! I don`t know, maybe he`ll become my favourite Doctor...
If you remember back to the beginning of the series, 'The Hybrid' was mentioned by Davros when he attempted to merge Time Lord DNA with the Daleks. It's worth keeping an eye/ear out for more of 'The Hybrid' as it's the Bad Wolf of this series.
Not gonna lie first time i saw this i wanted to high five everyone within a 10 mile radius 😂 so clever how they brought this back around using Capaldi's cameo! Never expected them to. Awesome.
Honest question here, why do people love Heaven Sent so much? I really can't understand the hype around it. Imo it was the most boring episode I have seen (of the modern series at least)
Face the Raven and Hell Bent too, but suuuurrreee...let's put all the focus on Heaven Sent. I'm not saying I don't like that episode, I do, but it just annoys me when people overhype his performance in that episode and ignore the ones in the other two. They're just as good imo.
Did he not realize until he caught up that they film the entire season before releasing the episodes? “Finally heard backlash from the community about the glasses” 1. The sonic glasses are cool and 2. They are a defining moment for 12. If 12 ever shows up in an anniversary special we’ll be able to know where he’d be in his timeline simply based on his sonic of choice in the special. And 3. The sonic glasses were made to help kids feel like they could be the doctor too with just any old pair of sunglasses versus needing an expensive toy sonic screwdriver. Something Capaldi was very big on, which is why his outfits are very different almost every episode because a kid managing to get a fez and a tweed jacket is far less likely than a kid wearing a jacket and hoody with a pair of sun glasses
so when the first doctor is puttering around with Susan, the Tardis parked on Totter's Lane , there were 2 immortal beings already in Captain Jack and Ashildr were also lurking about that knew what the tardis is sounded and looked like. Wonder if either they were near by enough to hear it, were either in the area looking for it when the doctor left 1963 with Barbara and Ian
The chemistry between 12 and Clara definitely took off in Season 9, as did Capaldi truly embracing the role and making it his own. I really liked this episode and the next.
I don't want to spoil Torchwood for you, but the Doctor choosing Capaldi's face is his way of flipping time. He saved Caecilius in Pompeii, therefore defying the laws of time. Then in Torchwood, time reasserted itself (I don't want to tell you how, except that I'm traumatized till date due to it). So the Doctor decided to Eff the laws of time and took that face for himself. This was the complete RTD/ Moffat version of Capaldi's face for the 12th Doctor. Also, the whole 'Saving people' thing becomes a crucial part of the 12th Doctor's identity, given what happens in season 9.
excuse me, but i actually love ashildr. i know people tend to dislike her bc she """was the reason clara died""" but she's really not and she had so little time and was already such a complex character. i truly wish we could see a little more of her.
12 is that cool teacher, 11 is the wacky uncle (or I thought funny grandpa in a young body), 10 is the cool young professor, while 9 is that guy you always see at the pub and wonder if he's an alien.
I will be honest, I don’t really like this Ashildr two parter. The Fires of Pompeii reference in this episode is amazing though and is what put this episode above the next
Peter Capaldi played the Roman stone carver in Fires of Pompei. He also is playing the Doctor now. He has the same face for a reason. This is the reason: To remind himself he saves people. Also the first episode he sees himself as This Doctor the character he is with is wearin a coat that the Doctor steals. That character is played by Elizabeth Sladden's (Sarah Jane Smith) RL husband. Sadly she had recently passed from cancer.
The story of this episode may be a bit beside the point, the important part being the Doctor emphasising the loss he fears, the central theme of the hybrid, Clara being more and more Doctory but also reckless
Love these Dr Who reactions, started with 5x1 and then went all the way back to the beginning and watched them all. If you like Dr Who, a fantastic but mostly forgotten show called PRIMEVAL will be right up your alley. Imagine a cross between Dr Who, Jurassic Park and Stranger Things! The premise involves rips in time causing portals (Anomalies) to open up in our world linking the past and future, allowing dinosaurs and stuff to pass between the world's and wreak havoc. It is a fantastic show and incredibly high budget especially for 2006. Honestly you'll love it man!
Ten is the smart kid in your class you hang out with in between classes and he knows a bunch of crazy stuff to do with the school computers. Nine is the groundskeeper you crack jokes with whenever you’re in the same room together but he’s lowkey intimidating.
Ten is totally that good looking, cocky jock in class, who also happens to be really good at maths and science. Plus all the girls love him. Nine seems like he'd prefer to be left alone, but is quite nice when you talk to him.
The dramatic irony in everything is that, in Viking culture, dying in battle is one of the greatest honor a human can receive, and you'd arrive in Valhalla (which is essentially warriors' heaven) to meet Odin himself and prepare for Ragnarok. Ashildr is now "cursed" to live forever, so she'd never reach Valhalla.
I knew this day would come :D Edit : I personally see 9 as the wounded veteran finding his way to healing, and 10 is the seemingly childish, guilt bearing hero with occasionally very cruel tendencies
It’s not the first or last time a Time Lord chose their regeneration face. In 4’s era, Romana (his Time Lord companion in that classic episode you did) regenerated, and chose that face from someone they’d already met. And of course, 14 choosing 10’s face.

Most anyone could get a cheap pair of black sunglasses and then say it's Sonic sunglasses. It was made so that cosplaying as the doctor could be a little bit cheaper. @@AmyWarriorPrincess But they weren't meant to be a good couple. That's the point. Her addiction to danger meant she ignored his PTSD something both Clara and the Doctor were responsible for by planting the dream of soldier Dan into Rupert's head. If they were a perfect couple it wouldn't work.
@@Concreteowl I think it’s less them being a perfect couple more it’s harder to believe they loved each other. Most of the time we see them they fight and whilst yeah that’s part of their relationship we never really see why they love each other if they argue most of the time. At least that’s my issue as it makes their relationship unbearable to watch and has less weight to their arguments. If it was more like Amy and Rory’s relationship in s5 with showing they do in fact love each other despite Rory’s disagreement with how the doctor acts (ofc for Danny on a bigger scale as Rory isn’t so against the doctor in the way Danny was) it would be easier to invest in.

The Doctor isn't dismissive of Clara and he doesn't make fun of her height and emotions anymore. I think they got some bad feedback from the last series version of the Doctor. Here, they are of a committed team.
I don't like what they did with Ashildr. I feel like they've put it into the plot of season 9 just because it was Maisy Williams and dragged her along during the whole series 9.

@@IlikeTrainsguy100 what are you talking about man. I even showed it to a friend out of context and it blew his mind too. I can write an essay on it.
@@shortandsweet_03 never show Heaven Sent out of context. It's part of an arc and can only be properly appreciated that way.
It's a bit like all those weirdos who think you can watch it on its own. No you can not. Heaven Sent makes absolutely no sense without Face the Raven, Hell Bent and the majority of 12 and Clara's tenure.
@@shortandsweet_03 because I just think it really isn't that good apart from the end and a tiny bit of the beginning. Face the Raven is a much much better episode.
Maisie Williams, typecasted as the strong independent woman...that cannot die, cannot fail, and upstages men.
I loved this episode for me. It was great. Thank you for your as usual great reaction video.
Series 9 delivered ... some fans slate it so much but I love this... Some ways i wish this episode was inbetween the first two parter and the Lake two parter so there's a sort of gap between this and the next one we meet Ashildr. But i adore this.
9 was an older Brotha.
10 was my lil bratha
11 was was my best mate
12 is my father
And that's all of them, no 13th.... Nope.
3:27 Oh Look... Wolfsbane (a.k.a. Rahne Sinclair)! Yeah I'm not doing the obvious choice... lol
15:15 Penny Dropped!
Danny was great. I've never understood the dislike the character generated.
@Concreteowl For me, Danny never fit because he didn't really gel with Clara. They could never get the writing right to make them a good couple.
I would`ve liked Danny to understand the Doctor never was an "officer" as he was thinking...
@@cargo71 but he is.
Failwhale: 10:29 I can see 10 in this story
Me: Oh boy
I still love the glasses...
Failwhale: patrons get to see videos early
Me: well you're on series 9 and it says your latest video is series 12 so I think we are beyond early at this point
I don't really like this two partner but I love the fires of Pompeii reference so much haha
You MUST do Vikings! The last half season is about to begin. Then you can do reviews on it all.
Great reaction dude
Well that intro was funny lol 🤣🤣🤣
Didn't he meet the witches of somewhere (can't remember) they said he could pick his face, which they said to the War Doctor 😁
Great show love looking back at the old ones 👍
I'd say you've gotta watch a third doctor episode, then Remembrance Of The Daleks and Caves Of Androzani to get to know 3, 5 and 7 better
You may also wanna check out Sixth Doctor: The Last Adventure from Big Finish, not sure if you're into the audios yet as they take a minute to get used to but they can end up being better than the show and in this case it gave 6 the send off the show failed him on
Where he got his face........Pompeii, yes.
The Doctor isn't dismissive of Clara and he doesn't make fun of her height and emotions anymore. I think they got some bad feedback from the last series version of the Doctor. Here, they are of a committed team.
Nine is the edgy godfather and ten is the cool dad
How much do you know about the Valeyard?
Charmie Charneco what is the valyard
@@randomclips8720 An important character from classic DW who's importance grows by the episode.
Oh this is going to be a good one....
Comment to be continued
It was a good reaction. I cant wait for 9x11
I don't like what they did with Ashildr. I feel like they've put it into the plot of season 9 just because it was Maisy Williams and dragged her along during the whole series 9.
Dude, I think you are the only who doesn't like the Sonic Glasses
Nobody liked Danny Pink, lol
No I did not like Danny Pink

Oh I like this episode
When will the last Harry Potter reaction be on?
"season 9 clara could play off as the doctor actually" ;)
good enough 7.5/10 episode. one of the weaker ones of series 9 but when this is one of the weaker ones and would be middle at worst in most maybe all of the other series it must be a great series!
