Hey Jason, Good to see you back in the garage even if it is still snowing outside. Those latches looked like they had been worked over several times. Watching you drill the holes to secure the latches it looked to me like you need to do some sharpening on your drill bits. When you put the self tapping screw in, it pretty well confirmed it as it cut right in. As a young man, in my mid 20's I built my first dune buggy. I fought with dull bits many times. Eventually I acquired a 1/3 hp double shaft motor that I turned into a bench grinder. As I ran into dull bits from then on i learned to sharpen them so they cut like a hot knife into soft butter. Since then i have sharpened bits for several friends who like me were amazed at the differance a sharp bit makes. By the way, I still use that old motor, but have acquired other motors with better stone wheels used for sharpening only. Those VW case halves are shot ! As cast aluminum ages, especially when in contact with water it deteriorates and becomes l undependable. Those pieces have past the point of repair. There are still good used case halves around to make you a good engine. Take care my friend. Work Safe, Be Well Stay Warm
Hey Chuck, yeah they are rough but that’s kinda of the theme of the whole project. You’re definitely right about the bits. I really need to sharpen them. I get all the hand me downs from the company. I usually don’t like working with dull bits.I have a couple leads on engines . I was hoping by this time the dunebuggy would be able to go in and out of the garage under its own power. It’s ok that it can’t, I like working on the Jeep also. Thankyou for being here. Be safe and well
Glad you were able to salvage those. I purchased aftermarket and they took som manipulating to make them work. And then they looked like I used the wrong part. Sorry to see the Vw engine is toasty. Just keep watching the internet. There’s always another part at a great price. Time is on your side. Maybe put a TRADE GNOME FOR VW ENGINE out there. What a deal for both parties. 🤠
I’m glad I kept all those pieces, they definitely add up.I have a couple of leads on some engines hopefully one pans out. Great idea with the gnome trade idea😁
Do you plan on adding a windshield to cowl seal? That might cause the latches to not line up anymore. (I'm about to tackle the windshield on my 2A and found that I'll have to adjust mine because the old rubber seal is toast and the previous owner made adjustments to the hinges instead of replacing the seal.)
I don’t think I’m going to replace the cowl seal, unless I find I need to. Looking forward to see how you do with yours. You’re doing a great job on your Jeep.
Hate to say but that case doesn’t look like it’s salvageable, from the video at least. I’d have to really dig in, in person and see if it is or not. With all of the work that it needs, oil cooler tab broken off, the corrosion inside, you’re almost better off to find another engine somewhere.
Yes , I knew you were right from the beginning, but it was worth the effort to open it up. Especially where I’ve never done it.it’s great to know that I have knowledgeable people like yourself to ask questions
Any progress you can make is still moving forward!
Nice work saving the latches Jason, well done sir.
Thanks Gary, little progress is all we can hope for sometimes with other important priorities
Good to see Ned back in the shop. 🤩
It is good to get him back in the shop. It seems like it’s been a while

Apparently some folks only got a dusting 👍 glad to see you back on the Jeep.
Yeah we got a little more than expected,I’m glad to be working on it again, I’m a little disappointed in the vw engine.

@@royworks28 it’s not about being right, it’s just my opinion is all. I agree also, you can’t beat the experience you’re gaining.
