A deep dive on Luxury Liner, the album that was my gateway drug for both the Telecaster and Country Music. My father bought the album for me on a road trip, and once I got home and placed the album on the turn table, I was hooked as soon as I heard the opening guitar riff from the title track. Luxury Liner is filled with top-notch songs, superb playing/singing, and beautiful production work from Brian Ahern. This album changed my musical direction.

We have had the good fortune of attending many Emmylou Harris shows over the past 46 years or so. She has always presented herself with dignity and
professionalism in every setting. The band members that have accompanied her on record and and live
is a Who’s Who of Americana genre. She is so committed and passionate about animals and roots of Country Music with great sincerity.

Emmylou has been a constant in my musical journey most of my life, I'm in my early 60's, I still remember the day I first heard Luxury Liner. A buddy brought the album to a garage band rehearsal in the summer of 77, we spent the whole afternoon trying to figure out all of Albert's licks and drooling over Emmylou's voice, music that last a lifetime! BTW, love your reaction to the picture at the end, don't we all just laugh or cringe when we see ourselves before we became our today selves!

Emmylou, aside from being a great musician has to be one of the most beautiful women ever born .

Gram Parsons had her wrapped around his finger. That man lived in his short time with us.

Emmylou and the hot band’s Poncho and Lefty changed everything for me. I became a Townes fanatic and dove into the hole of country music I’m still stuck in to this day. Elite Hotel shan’t be slept on either.

It’s almost like finding a back door in Country Music and realizing how connected things really can be.

I first learned of Miss Harris from Gram Parson's Grievous Angel album. I pray my memory recounts the following correctly. By luck, friends and I were at the Palomino club in North Hollywood to see Rodney Crowell play. With what was an early collection of musician's that were/went on to become The Hot Band/Cherry Bombs. Emmylou was in the audience. She was very pregnant with her second child at the time. Rodney coaxed her up onstage to sing a duet. That was a very special evening and I have been enjoying/following her artistry ever since. Thank-you for the deep dive. I look forward to more of these in the future. Safe travels.

I love that you started this new series off with this album. When I’m showing off my meager record collection, this one always comes out. The quality of musicianship, production and her talent is incredible. Her take on C’est la Vie is just so good.

I remember when this album came out , I bought it, came home and put it on and was totally blown away by the guitar on the first track . Like you it really was my introduction to the Telecaster, I had an SG at the time so this was a new tone to my ears. Still play this album a lot some 46 or so years later, especially love Tulsa Queen. Emmy has lasted so long because she's always surrounded herself with great musicians and writers etc. and always stayed true to herself. Thanks for digging up all the info on this album. will look forward to the next one!

Although many of my music- and bandfriends had been listening to country and country-like ‘Americana’ stuff for years, I never really did or sat down to get to know some of it. The band Wilco was as close as I came to all of this music and styles, 🤣.
But, because of this channel (I found it on RUclips because -even as a bassist- I love Tele’s) it all started for me.
    Never too late! 😄

Good video! I loved "Luxury Liner". Emmylou caught my attention about 1975 with "If I Could only Win Your Love". For some reason, Emmylou's first major single, "One of these Days", didn't impress me that much at first, but now I LOVE the song.
Zac, there's a really interesting album, just before your time, that just blew me away.
--- Overall, I don't list Judy Collins in my Top Ten, but her 1969 album "Who Knows Where the Time Goes", is one of those records that HIT OUT OF THE BLUE, then disappeared.
--- Judy decided to play with "Country Twang" just a bit, and that record may be the first to bring awareness to songwriter Leonard Cohen, especially his composition "Bird on the Wire".
--- James Burton and Stephen Stills also contributed to the album, which had some "Wooden-Ship-Sounding" licks on it.
--- By far, Judy's rendition of "Pretty Polly", is the most haunting and beautiful version I have ever heard.
--- The album does NOT include either of Judy's biggest hits, "Both Sides Now" or "Send in the Clowns", yet, the album is AMAZING.

Thank you for introducing me to this album. I know Emmylou Harris from Grievous Angel and from "being Emmylou Harris" which means "she's one of our American treasures and whenever she sings something on TV or something I like it" but I didn't know where to begin and this gave me the prompt to listen to that album. It is just wonderful. Great playing, great singing.

Great video Zac and I really love everything Emmylou ever did, but man, Poncho and Lefty by Willie and Haggard is hard to top. It is very subjective though.

  • @NickRatnieks
    @NickRatnieks 9 месяцев назад

Great analysis. James Burton would use "Shop Around" to let rip live and this song was never recorded on an album which Emmylou said was for "contractual reasons" or something like that. I have been listening to this album since 1977 but cannot get on with her version of "She" and that may be because the original on "GP" is in my opinion made by James Burton's guitar and really makes the song special. Emory Gordy Jr interestingly, played mandolin during the acoustic element of Emmylou's concerts while James sat down and played dobro and Hank DeVito played the bass. I once saw a concert by Neil Diamond- filmed circa 1970 and Emory Gordy was listed as his musical director, so he is clearly a massively talented guy who went into production.

this is a very loose paraphrase of somebody, maybe willie nelson, but i believe the gist of the quote is "if you are not in love with emmylou harris, it's only because you haven't met her."
