F- ing finally someone reviews this knife man. I’ve wanted it for a few years now yet there is literally not one actual review of this blade anywhere except for this and thank god Aaron knows what he’s talking about and pretty much answers everyone’s questions they have before buying an item in his reviews.
This is one of my very favorite knives. In my opinion, it can perform nearly all of your outdoor tasks when called upon. It would definitely make a great combat knife if needed. Very nice to find a review of this product! 👊
TOPS should put you on staff. This video sold me on this knife and I saved up and bought it. I have not been disappointed, either. I have no problem with the nylon sheath and put a ferro rod and striker in the little outside pouch along with some extra paracord. I do wish the keepers were snaps instead of velcro, though. It would be even better if the Kydex lining inside the sheath had a positive lock so the keepers would not even need to be used unless you were performing some rigorous tasks like hiking and climbing over rough terrain. It also came with a nifty little survival whistle. All in all, I am very happy with my knife. Kudos to TOPs and you for your detailed review.
Knives around 7" and in the Randall #1 style but with a modified hilt are pretty tough to beat for all around use. Busse came out with something similar but it was not a regular production run. Great observations. Very helpful. Thanks, Aaron.
When i want a knife, i always wait to see your review first, because i like how you actually use the knife and put it through its paces always great info..keep up the outstanding work. Stay safe out there!!
Hadn't planned on buying a new knife but had been doing some research and watching reviews. I came across this one and I felt like I didn't have a knife in my arsenal that gave me what I wanted in a tactical/Field knife. So I ordered it and it arrived yesterday. First impressions are good and I can't wait to test it out. Appreciate your review, helps inform guys like me.
Those Cold Steel SRK knives used to be reasonably priced and billed as an excellent utility knife for the price. I believe that was true. It’s not an inexpensive knife anymore.
I had one ,20yrs ago in AUS8 !!! I loved that knife to death. I miss it n thinking about getting it again ! it was hands down a great trainer knife for feather sticking !!!
I'm not a bushcrafter or woodsman pro at all. But for my short trips into the woods, 4-7 inch knives have served me well. I've tried to carry bigger knives, but I'm not good with them and they become heavy after a days hike.
Good review as always. I, too, am a fan of the tactical field knife design ethos. Silent Hero or ESEE 6 immediately pops in my head when talking tactical field knives. This Apache Dawn fits right in !
This is an after purchase update on the Apache Dawn...it’s wicked. I mean, stabbing, thrust...for sure. My hand is small to medium and I think a gloved hand would be spot on, but barehand, maybe some type of wrap. Further, the blade is heavy. This reminds me of holding a lawn mower blade. If you can’t stab, cut or thrust, hit the SOB and you’ll knock his lights out. A very hefty blade. The sheath? I like it, it will hold and silently carry your blade. It’s not ‘cool’ but I think you’ll grow to like it. It’s NOT concealable, but plenty of options for lashing to a pack, etc. I applied a gun oil to the blade to minimize rusting. Not a major deal, but if you check your knife on a regular basis, I don’t see a problem. This is a War weapon and secondarily useful in Camp. It’s meant to be used...
Might I recommend the Moccasin Ranger...same size and weight, comes with Kydex sheath and was in the $130 range last time I looked. Just wish they would do it in a different finish ...River wash finish.
Buying one now I've been looking at this blade for a minute..I bought the tops Bob and Viking tactics Norsmen , this one I figured I would be a better field knife for all around use and defense
Very nice piece !!! It is not available in France at the moment 😒. I will check from time to time. I really want one ! Thank you for this interesting review !
Been on the fence about buying one for a long time. Thanks for taking the time to do this review. I've wanted to see a good, comprehensive look at this knife, and you touched on all the points of interest very nicely. Well done, and thank you.
I dunno Aaron. You convinced me to buy TWO BK2 blades for my Tacoma and wife’s RAV4. And then I fell in love with your review of the Tops BOB in Coyote for my deer hunting. Afterwards I bought that Kabar 1211 in Tan as a field knife for my hunting stool. I gotta draw the line somewhere hahahahaha. I love your reviews. Now my collection is out of control. Cheers
You are right, it's a beast! I would definitely want a kydex sheath with this knife. With some practice you can do small tasks with a large knife. I saw a man in the Amazon make a fire piston with a machete and a screw driver in about 20 minutes. And yes,the fire piston made an ember right off. Thanks Aaron.
Hello my outdoors friend, thank you for sharing this very informative video. I really like that knife. For sure, I will check it out. All the best to you and your family, stay healthy. 🤗
Tops hands down is my favorite blade maker. If I don't order 1 tops blade per week then something's wrong. This is one of my favorite... I actually have one in my BOB and another in my console. Great video as always
@@DinoNucci lol... my next GAW is gonna be a tops bob. If you want just sub and you never know.. you might win it. The odds are pretty good atm considering I'm just getting started. 🍻
Nice review. I like the handle, but it’s a bit thick plus the low saber grind makes for a “sharpened pry bar” type of knife. I prefer the CS SRK for field craft work. Thanks for the review.
Yeah it's basically a giant SRK, which isn't a bad thing if that's what you want. If you're not doing a lot of toting around, the added benefits of the extra beef would outweigh the weight.
I have a cold steel SRK, Carbon V, purchased in 1987. About 4 years ago, I had a kydex sheath made, also has an internal firestick channel that runs along rhe spine of the knife,, a very cool design...a new life for the SRK outside its use while in the Army with the 82nd Abn Div. The SRK is a fine knife and sure to give me many more years of service. I just recently purchased an ESEE6 and will soon put it to the test and pick up a TKC kydex sheath. Thanks!
WoW , I love the look of that blade and I like that it's a 1/4 in. thick , BUT I do wish the the grind was higher , I know Tops usually sharpens their knives to 20° per side and I like that also , but just looking at how wide that bevel is , that blade looks to be pretty thick behind that edge and that I don't like ......✌ Be Safe .....
GU5S I don't think you understood his comment. 25* per side is pretty obtuse, that's getting close to axe edge angle and requires a lot of force to push it through wood.
@@huejanus5505 no, I understood it just fine. 25° edges are pretty common for outdoor knives and larger tools such as axes. I have over a dozen outdoor knives including more than a few Tops and they are grind to roughly (hand done so give or take) 25°.
Aaron great review on this blade. Looks great seems to work well. Now if it was compared to the cold steel drop forged survival knife (which I have been considering) it might fit the bill. Thanks for the great review.
I think every combat pilot should get one of those! I think they should get special guerrilla and survival training in case they get shot down since they will be alone surviving till extraction arrives! I'm sure they get good training but never should be too much! This one looks like the perfect Combat/Survival Knife!
I have hated ALL Tops knives I've purchased due to their lousy handles and sheathes...then you do another awesome review on this new Tops knife and I'm sold again. Stop doing awesome reviews!!! You're costing me a lot of money! Lol 😆
Different strokes for different folks. I have 4 Tops at present, and my favourite handle and feel by far is the Brakimo. A handle that a lot of reviewers didnt like saying it was too thin. Feels brilliant in my hand. Everyone will take to something different or have a different experience with a knife. I just like to watch them to get a decent idea of how it performs and what it is capable of. When it comes to handles it massively depends on hand and finger sizes and personal preference.
how would you rate this against the bk7? i have a bk7 and used it extensively and find it the best so far. i chop, cut hard use in mountain building situations but i like the look and thickness of this knife. usually not a fan of tops handles and i make my own leather sheaths so don't care what they ship it in really. just curious if anyone had any input. looks like a great tool. thanks.
Robert The Becker is a great knife. This is a very close competitor in size but I would argue because of the handle and higher grind on the back or you’ll get slightly better chopping out of it. I like the trail on this bigger size knife and the grind angle. They’re just very similar. The fit and finish on the tops will be better thicker spine.
Excuse me, but what size gloves do you wear? Hahaha .... I'm just kidding. Great job. You sold the knife to me. Putting it in the shopping cart right now.
