why do you dislike silk for this application?

Used the reactor on an AT thru hike. It was great. Added about 5 degrees of warmth as Alan suggested. Used it alone on hot nights and in grubby hostels and hotels. Washed once a month or so. After 5 months on trail my quilt still smelled good and was clean. Don't bother with the stuff sack, save weight and either put it in your quilt bag or just toss it in the pack.

Good vid, thanks. A change to get information based on a wealth of experience, as opposed to unpacking an item and hypothesising on what it may do. I have 2 liners that aren't so much about avoiding buying another bag, but more about being able to flex the insulation to deal with a range of temperatures on a trip. One silk and one grid fleece, so adding 1-2C or 3-5C They also help keep the bag hygienic!

I have the Reactor Plus. It actually adds 15* to my 20* quilt with quilt all properly tucked under my pad. I sleep cold and I really like it. I added a zipper down half way down the side so it's easy and quick to wear or get out of.Also makes my pad more comfortable against my skin.

I have used this liner for years. I use it in the sleeping bag all of the time not only to keep warmer but it is also nice because it helps keep your sleeping back clean. Much easier to was the liner then a down sleeping bag.
For sure. I’ve had a little down come out of my bags in the washer. Keeping bags clean can be tough.

I've used it in the low 30's a few times. Effectiveness is negligible but it certainly helps with preventing my bags from getting soiled. Eventually I switched to a bulkier fleece liner with clear insulation improvements, that doubles as a pillow in warmer temps.

I had never thought about adding a liner to my sleeping bag to add warmth.I actually have one which I use as a sleeping bag when it's hot.I have tried sleeping in a liner and bivy bag and it was pretty cold.I might try it with a summer sleeping bag and see what increase in temperature is gained.

I used the link & just bought the Extreme liner. I bought the liner more for keeping my sleeping bag interior clean than for its temperature rating which I suspect is exaggerated by the mfg.

I changed my mind & returned the liner to amazon. I've decided an additional layer of insulation clothing will be lighter & more effective at keeping me comfortably warm.

I was anxious just watching you squirming around in that death sock. I have a hard time with narrow & extremely tapered mummy bags let alone something like that. I use fleece, polyester or silk liners with a zipper in wider mummy & rectangular shaped bags or with a top quilt.

Since the winters here in Portugal never go very low into negative temperatures (celcius), I don't want to lug my -23ºC sleeping bag around.
I'm considering using the combination of 3 layer bivy + 5ºC sleeping bag + thermolite reactor liner (+ maybe another liner) for camping this December in the mountains.
What do you think?
That would work but it’s marginal. If the air is moist and the temps drop, you’ll be uncomfortable.
Try emergency liner
The correct solution for your situation. The combination gives you options for avoid over heating . If you have a cold night you can put on a sweater or light weight wool sweater.
I've got my sleeping bag liner safety pinned on at the feet end. And button clipped at the entrance end.it doesn't get hooked up when getting in and out of my pit.

Out of curiosity why did you go with the regular reactor and not the extreme version? The extreme seems like a better deal. The reactor adds up to 14 degrees whereas the extreme is 25, and it only costs a couple bucks more. It’s 110g/m² fabric whereas the reactor is 80g/m². It weighs 13.9 oz vs the 8.7 oz reg version. The stuffed dimensions are 5.75 x 4 vs 6.5 x 4.5
The extreme didn't exist at the time I bought mine (a long time ago).
In my case I like the Regular Reactor because it has much less bulk in my pack. .I my self don't buy something because it is a deal,. I want the product that meets my needs.

Choose long underwear first. The liner is my backup since it requires a lot of effort to enter and exit.
Question: do you like that placing the liner around a low R rated sleeping pad in combination with a quilt, (so you sleep on the liner not in it) would be effective at warming the pad?
In temps below -20ºF (-29ºC), the nylon cold soaks, so it's hard to warm up. I prefer to sleep on foam but that's just my experience.
@@ALinsdau interesting. I’ve not gone below -25C and that was on an ancient self inflating thermorest and the same closed cell from pad you use. Remembering back it was sufficient but I can see the direction it was going, the cold soak you mention. Good tip. Thanks very much.
If you combined two sleeping bag liners together would this add an additional 5 degrees on top of the original 5 degrees increase in warmth for a total of 10 degrees?
The theory sounds good but I don't think it'd work like that unfortunately.

I’m doing a bit of wild camping and bivvying,but on a real tight budget.
The only bag I have is an old British Army Pattern 58 down bag.
It’s good condition,tbh,but not the warmest.
Would that liner help?

Aaron, have you ever tried doubling up sleeping bags? granted that wouldn't save you the pack volume or pack weight. Just thinking if someone already has a 40F bag and a 20F bag (or even two 20F bags) if putting one inside the other is something that could be feasible to extend the ability to get out in temps the one bag isn't designed for. Might be easier to get in and out of? Have you ever had to do this? Your thoughts? And my Thanks!
If you put one in the other, the down will become compressed, losing insulation. Most people just drape one bag over the other. It's often done in the Arctic, using a synthetic inner and a draped over down bag. The extra effort required to manage 2 bags isn't worth it to me.

I do this plenty. The tricks are that they must be different sizes and not interfere with the shape of each others loft. It also helps if they have the same zipper orientation and the hoods do not bind or flatten eachother.
Its quite hit and miss, unless you own them, it could be hard to mix and match and know if they will work, without actually putting them together.
I have two 1 1/2 down liner bags with no zipper, I got from Eddie Bauer back in the early 70's. They are very snug but work great and make a made weight down bag a cozy winter bag. The Armies use a nesting bag system with a summer weight and a mid weight bag and a liner to make a very warm winter bag, Another bag extender idea is using one of the light weight hooded down jackets (16oz) by Patagonia or North Face as a bag extender. Somethings to remember, your body temperature varies with how much food you ate before going to bed and how warm you were before you get in the sleeping bag. How you react to cold depends on if you are from the Gulf States or in Manitoba.
I did this once, putting a 0 degree synthetic bag inside a 40 degree synthetic bag. It kept me warm to -15 degrees, but I don't know how much colder it could have kept me warm. The outer bag is bigger inside than the inner bag, so the loft was not compressed a lot, but with down it would probably be different. This was car camping, so weight and bulk didn't matter, but I don't think it would be practical if you're backpacking or otherwise need to limit what you bring.
I have a liner that works wonders but I was thinking of upgrading my bag to a 0 deg or colder, at the REI site they have several rated at Zero but at all different prices , go with the cheapest ? I know you get what you pay for though
If you can test the bags in the store, it's a good choice.
You definitely get what you pay for. Thing long term. My Western Mountaineering bags have lasted me 20+ years. They're expensive but over time are worth it.
I have a sleeping bag “ comfort 3degrees’ extreme -11 degrees , and this liner would it be enough for -5 , -10?

Sir I have this one but just ordered a silk one from S2S. This is because I read a claim that silk repels bed bugs, etc. Do you know anything about that? Is it a valid claim? Maybe the Reactor would be as good? Thanks! (The silk weighs about half of the Reactor).
Repels bugs - it's a screen, but doesn't "repel".
Have you used SOL escape as liner ? I wonder if it would keep warmer than Thermolite.

I doubt whether the soil escape work work at all as a liner , I hear of this a lot , heat generally in a sleeping bag is lost via convection, not radiation.ie through drafts . The sol escape and others like them make something wind proof (keeps the draft off ) , the foil could be removed and it wouldn’t make the slightest bit of difference , foils only good for chicken 🍗!
What do you think about thermal reflective bivy sheet as blanket?
That could work as long as it doesn’t trap moisture.
Do you think there would be any difference between the Thermolite liner and a quality silk liner?
If the silk liner has stretch, I would say no.

not sure where they get 15-25. just not true unless you are in hot weather like 70degrees you might feel 80 lol

Whoa...25 degrees would be pretty incredible. My experience tells has been 5-10 max. I wouldn't add this to my Western Mountaineering Megalite and expect to be warm in the Arctic. That'd be a mistake IMHO.
Hi Chris - this specific one is only rated to add 10-14 degrees. The Sea to Summit reactor extreme is a similar project in the same line that is rated up to 25 degrees. Both are probably exaggerated, but you may get better results with the "extreme" if you're really pushing your bag's temp rating.

Yes, if it's a really warm summer evening.

I pee in a bottle using a flashlight and a napkin. Pro Tip: use a bottle with a wide opening. Make sure to close it afterwards, before falling back asleep !

I cannot speak to each person's experience with this product. If it's your jam, that's great.
But at about the 5:00 mark it is removed from the bag. Watch that and tell me you don't believe you could get just as much insulation from cheap T-shirt style PJs and a pair of socks instead of a sheer sock that runs about $65.

@@ALinsdau I got one of those liners that are basically like thin T-shirts and just felt that I was kind of getting ripped off, given the material. It's like ordering a Carhartt and mesh tank top. 🤣 So I figured that if I was likely wearing something anyway, just get the cheapie liner from WM and have a cheap set of sleep clothes. When it's in the 20s or lower you've likely got at least base layers on anyway.
