REBEL'S ROMANCE a Godolphin winner on Dubai World Cup night

- Rebel’s Romance caused a surprise in the Dubai Sheema Classic, in which dual Derby winner Auguste Rodin finished last.
While Charlie Appleby’s six-year-old did win the Breeders’ Cup Turf in 2022, he was well beaten in the corresponding race 12 months ago and looked to be up against it in a field stacked with quality.
Along with Auguste Rodin, who is developing an all-or-nothing reputation, there was Emily Upjohn, Spirit Dancer and Japanese challengers Liberty Island and Stars On Earth.
The pace was pedestrian, set by Aidan O’Brien’s Point Lonsdale, but only William Buick on the eventual winner and Liberty Island were keen to stay close to it.
With half a mile to run, that trio had opened up a sizeable gap on the remainder of the field and when Buick kicked on to take up the running well over a furlong out, the writing was on the wall.
A strong stayer at the trip, Rebel’s Romance, who won the UAE Derby back in 2021, galloped all the way to the line, with Shahryar, Liberty Island and Justin Palace, all from Japan, taking minor honours. Emily Upjohn fared best of the rest just behind but Auguste Rodin offered nothing.
Appleby said: “He’d won a Breeders’ Cup Turf and four Group Ones, yet he was 20-1, which showed just how deep a race it was.
“William told me he had a plan but I told him not to tell me, then I couldn’t roast him if it went wrong!
“We were confident the right thing to do was go forward and heading down the back, I felt confident because I knew the fractions weren’t strong.
“William knows this track so well and did everything right.
“To have a winner tonight, on what has been a really international night, to get one on the board for Godolphin and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed is very pleasing.”
The Newmarket handler added: “It was our last throw of the darts, but we were confident he was in as good a place as we could get him. He went to Kempton and then had a great ride in Qatar from William.
“He has travelled a lot but we were confident he was at his best. Plan A was to go forward to give the horse the best chance to run his best race.
“This whole night is a huge space in the racing calendar that everyone will aim for. You’ve got to look after these horses and make sure you don’t give them one race too many.
“We toyed with the Champions & Chater Cup in Hong Kong next, but we will enjoy today and he deserves a bit of a rest.”
Buick commented: “He showed in Qatar that he can still perform from the front or close to it. He has a big stride and we decided to get across and somewhere near the action. We were given an easy lead off easy fractions. I was surprised he was in his comfort zone, going easily.”
O’Brien was keen to write off Auguste Rodin’s below-par effort, stating: “It was a bit of a non-event really. The race just developed into halves so we just want to put a line through the race really.
“Ryan (Moore) just said he felt he wasn’t happy where he was or anything. They just never activated at all so it was a bit of a non-event. It was just one of them where it didn’t happen.”

@Kevin
Me too, but there will be a few salty about it.
@@nightowl7459He had a bad season last year with injuries and his youngsters not being as gd as first thought. We suffer if hrs not competitive so let's hope he's back and we get some great racing this season.
@@suemaher5282 He did Sue, racing is a game where if you aren't dealt a good hand in the two year old department you aren't going to have any good three year olds, I generally like to see competitiveness, as you say, the sport does suffer if it becomes too one sided, really looking forward to the flat season getting into full swing, the trials aren't that far away.
@@nightowl7459I don't see why. Sometimes they might just be going to the wrong races and they go to so many US races.
They have to often pay £2mil for Frankels just like others it doesn't work.
After his diabolical showing in last season's Guineas and King George are we really "shocked" at Auguste Rodin's showing today?
He will win next 2 races again as if nothing had happened😂
@@contrail__I wonder if you will put your money where your mouth is?
@@contrail__ If there is not a dramatic improvement in his next race he will be retired I suspect.
@@contrail__no doubt 😂😂
@@Funeeman Maybe although the reason they probably didn’t retire him was because he did not have the perfect record. Realised they couldn’t charge top money for a horse at stud who put in a couple horror runs so what’s another bad one on his record.
Awesome backed Tower of London and Rebel Romance
Great I'm going to talk to someone smart. Tower of London was Coolmore derby horse before August Rodin idea. But anyways. Rebel Romance not many will be honest why it wins here. Really no pace Emily upjohn and August Rodin are the best GB.
The Japan filly makes a good effort.
It's not the greatest shock in history if August is stuck back he isn't Frankel or Equinox.
Emily Upjohn isn't an Enable. This probably added up a dull race really.
Other than a deserved winner 👍👌
Rebel Romance-Godolphin!! Bravo!
He was never ridden out hard ! Did you watch his run ? Great winner in Rebels Romance ,congratulations to all concerned !
Great horse, great race !
Just been on the phone to a close friend of mine. Finger's seriously burnt on Auguste Rodin and Nashwa.
I'm a bit drunk but can't believe I just reliezed. If point Lonsdale was 6th then wtf happened here?
Even Emily will leave him 6-8 lengths in the Coronation cup.
Horse racing is crazy.
Thrust me all these horse may win a race again so thats another worrying point 😂
Shocking how the favourite ran.
First run of the season he was like that last year & look what happened
Not if you know anything about horse racing
Liberty Island at 2/1 was actually favourite anti post for months.
So it's also a joke. Usual bookies taking piss out of punters.
I really don't start betting until Royal Ascot, Chester, Goodwood
All those ones you can spot some value.
Lmfao you mug @Dwayndibb
Rebel on inside or whatever 🎉❤❤ i like the romances
Thank goodness Aidan O'Brien had Tower Of London as being among the Ballydoyle inmates sent to Dubai for this meeting, because he's the only one who ran like he had any real ability and like he could potentially be future star in the making in the staying division for Coolmore. Auguste Rodin here in the Dubai Sheema Classic and Luxembourg in the Dubai Turf apparently didn't get the same instruction sheet that Tower of London used in the Dubai Gold Cup because they both frankly stunk up the joint at Meydan in those two races.
I upvoted they probably are 2 talented but unreliable horses. Not saying I have backed them to win money. Obviously I wasn't dumb in UAE. use your head.
But really their just great Group 1 horse with great breeding.
I don't know what to tell you the lads are happy.
They certainly don't care about gamblers.
Wiliam buick is the Exellent Rider
Auguste Rodin had his favoured left hand track and good ground so what happened? Has he trained on as a 4 year old?
Deep Impacts progeny are very hit and miss once they hit 4. I'd be giving him another chance at Ascot but if he downs tools again it will be off to the breeding shed with him albeit with a lower stud fee than they would have been hoping for.
@@frankelforever14 Ascot is a right handed track. I don't think he performs as well going right.
They will either retire to stud or go b2b in the derby he’s known for his first run of the year being a stinker he’s bounced back last year he’ll probs do it again
Ask Lewis...as Lewis 'knows' 😂 🤡
@@rivergold4835 he won the Irish Derby on a right handed track. I don't think it matters what track he is at, when he isn't in the humour he drops the anchor. O'Brien had mentioned the prince of Wales stakes as an early season target for him before aiming him at BC Classic. Unless he shows up at Ascot he won't be heading to the US I imagine.
أخيرا الدنيا ضحكت ليك يا جودولفن
This horse has always been underrated. Buick chose to ride Nations Pride over this one in the 2022 BC Turf, and that proved to be a mistake. He was no match for Equinox here last year, but he's come back around to top form Still, this was a very poorly judged race by the "pack". They let the top three get too far ahead on a modest pace. Liberty Island was probably best.
Yeah Liberty Island got too far back and Rebel Romance pinched a decisive break on her. Rebel's Romance was one of the fancies for same race last year but he is definitely a better horse now.
@@davidwong6682Don't forget Misriff won this race and they kept overeating him. Just to state facts 👍
I am never happy when a G1 is won by a gelding. And a race with no pace is particularly disappointing. But then, I suppose expecting anything after last year's fireworks with Equinox was foolhardy.
I didn't think Equinox went too hard at the front in last year's race to be honest. But there were plenty more pressure in the 2023 race than the 2024 race though.
Something very dodgy about that race. I think they wanted Sheikh Mo to win a race on Dubai World Cup day
Really? What race did he win on World Cup Day last year or The Year Before that? There's certainly something very dodgy about your logic.
Maybe they tried to do that last year too only for Equinox to blow him and the rest of the field away in track record time (without getting off the bridle may I add). Jokes aside, the race was set up for RR this year. Winners are grinners I say.
What a strange horse Auguste Rodin is. A hat-trick of good group 1 wins, now a hat-trick of embarrassingly awful group 1 performances. Too early to say whether he has or hasn't trained on, but I sure as hell won't be backing him in his next outing.
Hello Count. Don't you follow NH racing?
@@Funeeman I stopped following National Hunt racing in the 80's. I saw Arkle, Mill House, Flying Bolt, Persian War,Night Nurse, Sea Pigeon, Red Rum, Bula and others. There's absolutely nothing in NH racing today that would make me want to follow it. What about you?
@@countbelalucozade I don't follow it as closely as I use too. In fact prior to attending Sir Ivor's Epsom Derby win in 68 NH racing was the form of racing that I much preferred.

I have now given up gambling altogether, 40 years of gambling, and this is why ! I have been clean now for 4 months, no more incredible highs and impossible lows. It’s all a fix with only the bookies winning because of results like this
Yeah, the owners of million pounds of horse flesh and going to pay to have their horses flown across the world and put into temporary accommodation to run in a million pounds horse race just for the fun of it, aren't they?
It's a fairly tough race to predict. You can't just thrust Bookies odds.
@@nightowl7459their's no point in using your brain cells on these people.
@@bigj9324You are probably correct. 👍
Anyone reading anything into this form needs their head reading
Rebels Romance wouldn't have won a NH bumper in 2023 then win 2 races in 2024.
It's a crazy business
@@DwayndibbReally? He ran flat in this race last year when he missed his planned prep race due to a slight injury, unsettled his rider when he was nearly brought down in his second race, failed to act on the soft going in his next race a comfortable beat Elegant Man on his last race, a listed all weather at Kempton.
@@nightowl7459I'm repeating but Misriff won this and gained a 125 rating. Look just watch out for future betting.
It was a deserved win for sure 👍👍
Definitely more enjoyable than Misriff 👌👌
@@Dwayndibb Yeah, I was just pointing out that type can forget last year, I wouldn't take the form seriously the way that the race was run, I had him down as no bigger than a 15/1 shot based on what he did tha season before last and the way he ran last time, I thought he had the capability to be in the mix but was put of by his price drifting alarmingly. 👍
Just incase any confusion I will take Rebel Romance all day over Mishriff.
I feel bad putting them in same bracket.
what if ryan moore wins the views hit 111k views but if godolphin wins the views are low😭
Disgrace of a ride from half a dozen of those jockeys.
No way moore best jockey, rodan does this
Silly price. Thought be more like 12s
True, I backed against him, but I honestly thought that he was massively over priced, actually that's what made put me of from going each way.
Looks like the boys in blue have a Royal Ascot horse
Took 12/1, I should’ve took 25/1 instead, even though I’ve put £2 on and got £26, I should’ve got £52 ffs 😂😂😂
You should've asked for any price guaranteed.
@@Zarkava8 I placed it yesterday, how come if the best odds guaranteed only apply ON THE DAY of the race instead of 24 hours before?
@Schindlerteejay
I didn't back him, but I was very surprised when I saw how big his price was considering he won reasonable well last time, at least you won, well picked.
@@nightowl7459 Thanks. (I am very bad at knowing when best odds are on, even if they’re on, they’re only on UK and Irish races lol.)
@@schindlerteejay94 Bookies rules I'm afraid.
Pity Aidan didn't stick with his Irish peers and gave the likes of Tadhg O'Shea a chance, he had to move to dubai for a few rides
What a stupid comment
Maybe an injury is the reason for Auguste rodin’s poor show? Or maybe as I’ve stated on numerous occasions he’s an absolute pig of a race horse who downs tools when he doesn’t fancy it and doesn’t get his own way? #knowledgeispower
Auguste Rodin seems to have on and off days depending on his humour? Can happen with some horses . His recent work was very average, and that was a clue, though
Please I want to be honest. He barely gets 1m4f. The tight Breeders cup track helped him and Epsom having his acceleration was great. Barely got home in Irish Derby.
If you think of Desert Crown also looked better at 1m2f.
Maybe August lacks heart that could be part of stamina with horses just not giving the jockey full effort.
He doesn't like soft ground Aiden says it's his action. I don't know if it's just him giving up.
@@Dwayndibb it’s okay not getting the distance but he finished plum last? That has nothing to do with not getting the distance. Good ground he got, his favourite way round, he got. He sulks. It’s okay. But people acting like he’s a worldbeater are sadly mistaken
I've seen some fixed racing in my time this 1 was up there 😂 so blatant 😬
Wtf are you on about ! how was it fixed why was it fixed and who benefited from the supposed fixing
Considering Coolmore and Goldolphin are arch rivals
Terrible ride on Auguste Rodin
What a stupid comment how was that Ryan moores fault
How is that a terrible ride when the horse did not do a tap all race..
I don't think it was a bad ride at all - the horse, talented as he is, obviously has a mind of his own. When he decides he's not in the mood, he just downs tools and doesn't do a light. This is the third time its happened, and must raise a huge question mark over him.
I don't this was a stupid comment ; Ryan put the horse so far back in a very slowly run race !!!!!
@@muhammadkrarr6015 yes and even in a slowly run race the horse did not pick up. He has done it before and no doubt will now get the dreaded squiggle from Timeform.
I put £3 quid on him
Very poor ride from moore
Don't blame Moore when the horse clearly didn't give a yelp!
@@davidwong6682Was like a training race especially if he runs good next time. Either that or retirement series of races
@@Dwayndibb Well...the horse did run a couple of shockers last year. While he has a great overall record, all his unplaced runs were last or near last. There's not much Ryan Moore can do if the horse "just didn't turn up" in his race at all. Maybe AR's next start will tell us whether he still wants to be a racehorse. Either he improves sharply next start or he finishes up as a racehorse. We'll see.
