Was blown away by this show so glad we are getting more "crimson
sky"!!
Some people don't realise that you don't need novels to keep this series going when this is based on real people.
bingo, on point
Based on real people doing fictional things. If Adams even looked at Hosokawa Gracia, his head would have been gone. Lol
When I started watching the series I looked up the story of the real character Blackthorn was based on and so I was kinda disappointed when the series ended where it did because it felt like there was a lot more story to tell. For this reason I'm glad they are going to do more
@@kityhawk2000 Oh yes, Blackthorn was most compelling
@@kityhawk2000 Yes, the one that never even met Mariko(Gracia).
While I'd hoped they'd move on to Tai-Pan and Gai-Jin, I'm delighted any TV series based on one of my favourite series of books is doing so well. There's plenty of sequel material that can be interpolated from the other novels, as well as the history of William Adams (the real John Blackthorne) and Tokugawa. One of Blackthorne's distant descendents - Reiko Anjin - appears in the book Noble House (1960s.) After three seasons of Shōgun, they could move to the Tai-Pan era (the 1840s) and fill in the gaps between Tai-Pan and Gai-Jin (1860s.) Gai-Jin features Prince Yoshi, one of Toranaga's descendants, whose later life is also referred back to in Noble House (1960s). There's also King Rat (1940s) along the way. It's such an incredible 500-year saga, filled with complex family lines that intersect. I have high hopes. The saga could run for years.
The battle of Sekigahara, Buntaro's journey from Osaka to Edo, young Toranaga, Blackthorne's Journey to Japan, Toranaga's betrayal of Ochiba and the heir, to name a few, yeah there's a lot
Exactly what I was thinking!
@@wcw2793 I'm really excited for yabushige's storyline the most!
Also, Lady Gin's Ōoku (post-siege of Osaka), the siege of Osaka, the last days of Buntaro, and the closing of Japan from the rest of the world, and so many!
Good news! can't wait. Hopefully get to see some battles.
me too
It's Shogunning time.
And he “shogguned” all over Japan
Meh, I read the book so I'm good. What I really want is for Netflix to give me season 3 of Polo, but sadly that will never happen.
Thanks for the announcement
Shocking, if anything I find tv and movies more interesting if I’ve read the book.
@@MajesticWaffle I'm the other way round. Once I've read a book, I've created the world in my head and all the characters. I also hate any changes made. I accept they have to be made to turn things into TV shows, but I often avoid adaptations of books I love. I will give Shōgun a shot though, having watched the Chamberlain version after reading the book.
Marco Polo was awesome, but budget. 😭 now the actors have all aged
I read the book too. But I also know history and there's more to tell.
Im excited as hell! Season 1 was amazing and i can't wait for season 2!
same
Story-wise, you don't need to worry about seasons 2 and 3 because the drama will take place during one of the most exciting periods of Japanese history. The problem is that this period is so popular that any history book or drama could completely spoil the thrill unless they introduce some twists in the plot, which may create another issue since everyone knows how the actual events ended. That's why James Clavell chose to stop just before the most important event in Japanese history.
In real history, Blackthorne (Adams) became an important historical figure a few years after the end of Shogun, and the strange friendship between Toranaga (Tokugawa) and him continued until his death. Additionally, the struggle between Toranaga and Ochiba (Yodo) lasted for 15 years until she followed Mariko's path.
Oh, did I just spoil everything about Season 2 and 3?
The point is that Shogun seasons 2 and 3 need to address actual historical events and the roles of Blackthorne, Toranaga, Ochiba, and even Buntaro in Japanese history, while James Clavell avoided this by setting the story before the major event.
I like that Hiroyuki Sanada is in Shogun as he played his part in season 2 of westworld so well with his character in Shogun world
Hiroyuki Sanada is one of those great, hugely versatile actors. I first remember seeing him as Ryūji in Hideo Nakata's Ring. He was also excellent in Danny Boyle's Sunshine.
@@DomH75 I've not heard of those shows. I think Westworld is the only other thing I've seen him in and I'll never forget how real his scenes felt the first time I watched it
@@vulture117 Ring (aka Ringu) is a 1998 Japanese horror film and a classic of the genre. Sunshine was an Anglo-American science fiction film. It goes a bit potty at the end but is worth a look! You'll love them! :)
@@DomH75 thanks. I'll give them a watch if I can find them. Sometimes potty endings work
@@vulture117 Ringu is available as a 4K or HD Blu-ray from Arrow. Sunshine was released on Blu-ray by Fox. It has interesting, likely unintentional, ties to Paul Anderson's film Event Horizon.
I completely agree with you. I rarely call something a masterpiece and this show is a rare masterpiece. As long as it isn't rushed and is done with care and passion, I am all for it.
It's tokugawa ieyasu with an i not l, just so you know :P
This is how you make an adaptation, working with the author and being faithful to the original material, not going completly off script doing your own thing thinking you're better than the beloved work you're trying and failing to ''adapt''
I feel it's different when there's real history to draw from. the character Blackthorn is based on lived in Japan for 20 years and became a trusted advisor to the Shogun and the first European to be called a Samurai. He also had a wife and children there. So I feel there's a lot more story they could tell.
Figured. Considering they didn't show the iconic scene from the book that shows Ishida's death. Bet that'll be the season 2 cold open.
Great, I'll see it if and when I can.
There was a narrative epilog at the end that could actually dramatized. The great battle. It could mirror the real Tokugawa and Adams history for these fictionalized character. Or veer off on a new timeline. Blackthorne, modelled after the real Adams, could in this scenario build Toranaga ocean crossing ships. Ships with large cannon. Helping Toranaga's metal smiths cast better, larger guns of iron rather than bronze.
The movie Gladiator veers greatly from history using historical names. Creating hypothetical "What If" stories in historical dramas is not without precedent.
brilliant cant wait asi loved it
Well that's great news!
Best thing on TV in years.
I thought there wasn't going to be another series of Shogun, particulary the way series ended and the scenes which we see Blackthorn as a dying old man. Shogun is great and it deserves to have 2 more seasons.
Think the scene of him old was a dream. He's not supposed to leave Japan and he was holding Mariko crucifix which we know he throws into the sea
This is really, really good news!!!... ( Will be interesting to know how they plan to involve James Clavell's estate in the process?... ~
Maybe there's some unreleased material or note's that the Author wrote before he passed they could utilize?... )
I think his daughter or grand-daughter is one of the producers?
Great show. I sorta trust them to deliver more.
You're right Mr. H. They have earned the benefit of the doubt. So I too will grant it. Season one was so outstanding I'm going to read the book. So onward to season two.
This is good news. On another subject, I'm suprised you haven't covered Colin Farell's Sugar, which had a huge sci-fi twist in episode 6.
Its bad news bud
I have watched season 1 so much i think im starting to learn japanese?🤔
So glad I actually miss the series
The series wrapped up perfectly. It's disappointing hearing there will be more.
They need to bring Fuji back as Blackthorne's love interest. They can say it ddin't work out at the covent.
Incoming battle of Osaka
I am looking forward to this at first I was skeptical but although it's a novel it's based on real history just named changes Season 2 should kick off with Sekigahara and depending on how far this goes ends with the Winter Battle of Osaka, although killing off his son who was based on Hidetada Tokugawa I think was a surprise, just one thing to say there was actually 2 Samurai who I thought there names started with L is actually I.
I do fear they just make up a story and base it on history.
Woohoo!
Just wait until woke gets a hold of it and there’s a black samurai all of the sudden
The lack of forced diversity was very refreshing.
Nah Ubisoft got that covered 😂
Lol Ubislop getting that sweet sweet DEI moneys it's quite pathetic honestly 😂
It's a Woman King cross over were they move the entire production to Africa and Torenaga becomes a slave.
@@SemperSalam indeed
Great
This is great news. There's still more storage to tell. Leave it to idiots to try to b**** about a good show.
Hard to see how they are going to pull this off for a couple more seasons. Yes there is history to draw from but to rework history around any new storylines they create will be extremely difficult.
Add in that a lot of the popular characters are gone and the supposed main character in Blackthorne was severly underdeveloped and you dont exactly have a recipe for success.
Perhaps James Clavell's estate has some notes and ideas that haven't seen the light of day but even so.
Also this is a show that finished with a smaller audience than when it started. How much of that audience will still care in 4 or 5 years time when a new season comes out?
Month ago I did watch original and was wondering this did end like "will continue" 🤔
Loved the first season just pure art great cast storytelling and the world looked so amazing no woke crap just entertainment
Mr H, it’s Yi-ya-su. Ieyasu is spelt with a capital “i”.
I agree, Worst case scenario we still have season 1.
Shogun season 2 will get that sweet sweet DEI money by making the show more for modern audiences
Did the first season adapt the full novel?
Pretty much. Made a couple tweaks to the story that indicate that Blackthorn manages to leave Japan at some point.
Yes, it did. They literally told the whole story in season 1 and I have no clue: a). what story they wanna tell and
b). why people are saying this is good news.
Haven´t we learn anything from GoT, where they run out of source material and literally screwed up the last seasons, because these hacks can´t write a good story?!
@@doublep1980 They could easily spend a season going into Toranaga's military campaign against the regency and his ascent to Shogun, and then Blackthorn's quest to regain his canon and sail against the Portuguese and raid the Black Ship. Ample opportunities in both story lines for intrigue, people panicking, and behind the scenes maneuvering.
@nolongeramused8135 you misunderstood those scenes. He drops Mariko's crucifix in the ocean, which is seen in those fever dreams in which he's old on his deathbed.
The real life guy stayed in Japan the rest of his life. He sent money to his family back in England.
@@doublep1980 I don't mind a second season telling the different battles, sekigahara and the beginning of the shogunate but I'm worried that they also greenlit season 3.
Watched the show. I do wish there was a battle. Certain things were meaningless like the cannons not really being implemented in battles. I get battles are high budgets. Hopefully, we will see more money being poured into this and get some authentic battles.
Why?
I just pray! that disney doesnt interveen now as this show could be a saving grace! And just stay as distributor. As this show actually will makepeople subscribe for disney+. But I love to return to the priest and their bordel neighbour xD And I hope they give us a Battle! or the epic campaign that actullay happened in history.
No, just no. The book is over. Watch the characters and dialogue get dumbed down. You asked for it
HEI!HEI!HOOOO!
I'll watch when I get round to that particular streamer in a few months 😂
When will there be native American samurai?
when they sell out in season 4
Yah there is now way they spend that much on practical sets and entire villages, ships, etc and not do more seasons.
As long as the quality doesn't drop I'm totally down with more.
Too bad we will have to wait two years for the next season.
That's a shame. They'd be better off just redoing some of the other books in the series. They could make just as good of a show with Tai Pei or one of the others.
There isn't a long list of over examples where this worked. The only one that really comes to mind was the last season of The Leftovers. Which while they admittedly crushed it, it was only after the second season that wasn't.
I thought Shogun was supposed to be a micro series
It was, but it was a huge success. That means it'll get another season. Book or no book to adapt.
Here comes Game of Thrones season 8 all over again 😞
Tangfastic news!
This will be another Game of Thrones. Show runners said only one season before because they covered the book. Now they’re just going to make up the rest.
That's not good news, lol.
They barely managed to keep to the book as it is, as where they diverged things were generally worse (some cuts were actually rather nice, but anything they changed is strictly worse). Without a book it will turn into complete fan fiction.
+1 it seems like most people are ignoring what made it good and pushing for all the things it succeeded with despite having. Everyone seems to want them to write it to death instead of lettig it be good and over.
Shogun was great but it ran it's course. No thank you don't want anymore the story was complete. If they want to tell more stories about Japanese history I'm down though.
Its going to be so bad. The season 1 wrapped up everything nicely.
This is gonna be an absolute disaster of GoT final season levels.
The have no more story of the books to adapt, plus 2 of the best characters are dead.
"But but... we want to see the big Battle of Segikahara ...."
So they gonna stretch the battle for an entire season?!
And what are they gonna show in season 3?
This is so stupid on every level and just shows the incompetence of modern Hollywood.
History dude.....
@@MrHReviews Like with the new Assassin´s Creed?
@@doublep1980 how are these comparable?
There's quite a lot of 'what happened next' information in the later novels that can be built on, as well as laying the foundation stones for adapting the later books. Potentially, members of the Struan clan can be added to the second season.
the thing is. the book is done, story from the book is over.. aint anything to ruin
I don't have any optimism or trust. They are out of book material, and Hollywood doesn't have any good experience with extending past source materia (they usually can't even reasonably adapt source material faithfully. This show is an exception in these dark times). Does anyone really think modern writers, especially now they are under the Disney banner, will do the show or history justice? I think not. I wish they would end on a high note.
Shogun is in my top 5 Novels of all time. I have zero interest in watching some scribe try to continue it.
Disney will find a way to ruin it especially after they buy hulu lol watch
With no source material. It will be shit
You realize the source material is history? Right?
@@MrHReviewsYou trust them not to butcher it? That’s hilarious. I’ll be back for the black transgender samurai in season 2
100% they going to make Yasuke main character for season 2 and 3
