This was groovy as always. I noticed you don't use any guides. I use them a lot, because I can align things to them without having to go into the align and distribute controls as often. I can add them as I go along and draw an object, add a guide or two on their centers, and align stuff to them where needed. For those who do not know yet: Even guides can be rotated, even to exact angles, then duplicated and manipulated much the same way as paths, but you cannot curve them. I also always start with one vertical and one horizontal centered to the page, so it's always there to make it easier to have the centers of bounding boxes and what not snap to to their shared center, or on center horizontally or vertically and off center to the other.
Thanks for the awesome video. I noticed that on your original design you added a window glare effect that you missed here in the video. But I guess that adds a small challenge for the viewer to figure something out on their own.
Your tutorials are great man. I know it's difficult to talk while you work but you do a great job of it. And, on top of that being difficult, you're constantly describing more than one way of doing what you are doing while you do it. Incredibly skillful and helpful. Thanks for what you do!
Great tutorial again Nick! Learned so much from them. I recently made the same rainbow effect, but I did it by drawing the outer line of the rainbow with the pen tool, duplicated it, flipped it over and used the interpolate path effect to create the inner lines. It's so cool how many ways there are to achieve something in Inkscape.
This is a really great tutorial. Just one point of criticism perhaps: your cassette isn't big enough to hold that much tape on the wheel 😅 Or rather: there is too much tape on the wheel for the physical space available in the cassette.
I love your tutorials so much! I often make graphical abstracts for material science papers and projects of our institute, and I'm happy with my work, but after watching your videos I always find a more elegant way of doing them.
Thank you very much! As far as I could see, the tabe roll on the left maybe wouldn't fit in the case, but the tutorial was GREAT! Inkscape is so full of features now I can't even imagine it can do... Thank you Nick!
Hi Nick, thank you for the attention to detail in all of your tutorials , I just have one question. I have followed each step carefully and at the 17:01 in the video when you are changing the rainbow to curved I do not get the “triangle” nodes that help me curve these lines. I am wondering if there is a setting turned off or what I did , please help!
This really is such a great lesson. I'm always fascinated by how you're using mostly simple shapes and alterations to create such cool images and effects. I'm always asking myself how you come up with the way to get to your desired outcome.
Clear tutorial Nick. As I know you also do Affinity Designer tutorials it would be great to see you do this one in AD as well. Inkscape was my introduction to vector drawing with V1 back in 2021. Have been using AD the last 2 years and reluctant to pay for the upgrade to V2 as I see limited improvements. Having just installed the latest Inkscape I see substantial improvements since last using it and am considering making Inkscape my preferred SVG program. Hence my interest in seeing the workflow difference in you doing this tutorial in AD, particularly the rainbow background. I did watch your video comparing these two products.
Nice work Nick but I think you would be able to see the background colours through the tape content viewing pane. Also need a pencil to tighten the tape up ;-)
Thanks for the video. I think that using interpolate subpath + Path > Fracture would be an easier method for creating the colored stripes in the background. Also, the tape wouldn't fit into the cassette if the centers are placed like that (imagine how the roll extends in the hidden part).
Very nice tutorial, thanks ! I have one question though. At around 1:48, you transform a rectangle into a trapezoidal by selecting the nodes and moving them symmetrically along the path. How do you do this with the mouse ? I know I can use the comma and period keys and there are few other ways to achieve the same results, but I guess there must be a way to do so with the mouse, I just could'nt figure out how.
With your node tool selected, you should see an icon that looks like for 4 double-sided arrows (2 on top, 2 on the bottom). When you hover over it a pop-up message will read "show transformation handles for selected nodes." Click it to turn it on (it's off by default). Once that's on, click on the rectangle and then click and drag over the two top nodes of the rectangle. You should now see a little arrow sticking out of the selected nodes (it may be a really small arrow depending on how your Inkscape is set up). Click on either of the arrows sticking out of the two top nodes and drag it in while holding down the shift button. That should do it.
can anyone tell me at 1:26 how did he drew the rectangle in such way that it doesn't cut the previous one when i do it the new rectangle just cuts the previous rectangle
Just turn on your snaps, draw a rectangle inside the clear area, make it the size you want, click on it with the cursor to bring up the arrows, grab the horizontal arrow in the middle top or bottom to skew it, turn on a white fill and adjust the opacity down until you are happy with the look.
Hey I noticed you didn't talk about how to add the glare on the cassette window. What's the easiest/most consistent way to apply an effect like that across shapes?
I'm completely new to this kinda stuff, I only downloaded inkscape today, but from following this through to the end, I found a simple way is to just make a rectangle, click to get the rotate option, use the middle arrows to skew it, then duplicate, make sure they're the same angle, then drop it down a layer. I had a few difficulties when colouring but it gave me more chance to play about with the tools and create more objects and layers etc. Hope this helps!
Hi, I just tried curving the edges in rainbow, but somehow for me it’s not working. Do you have some tips, or other tool, which could I use? Btw everything’s working, only this part not.
Question.. if I go in the Tapeform the second time withpath effect interpolate sub path, the programm chooses a bit of the outerring. It looks very different that step, than what I see in the video. (I just downloaded this bew version)
Hey Nick, nice video and can make a tutorial about how to make Obama hope style design, that was great design and hope you can make this video, thank you and hope God bless you
This might be just a coincidence, and probably is, but I enjoy the fact that the very next video after I suggested using the transformation handles on the nodes tool shows off that feature haha.
_Don't say there's no way the tape would fit in that cassette. Don't say there's no way the tape would fit in that cassette..._ There's no way the tape would fit in that cassette. _Dammit!!!_ Great tutorial either way.
Ohhhhh brilliant tutorial, if i UNION more objects i can difference all together....damn...i was copy each one to "difference" them....omg....i wasted my time until now, thanks for that °°°° SET CLIP is also new...i am sad that i do not know what this stuff already do ^^,
Kinda fast for us to follow without having to endlessly slide back and forth…”lemme just duplicate this” - bam click boom you did something no idea what (scroll back to try to see your cursor zipping around)…”I’m just gonna ungroup this real quick” click click bang zoom no idea what you just did (scroll back again to see your cursor zipping around once again..ugh. I know you usually DO a good job of verbally stating exactly what you are doing as you do it, but this particular episode not so much…
Your videos would be more helpful if you would SLOW DOWN! We’re here to learn and you talk and do things so fast even if I’m pausing every few seconds it’s almost impossible to follow.
You have no idea how much I've learn from your videos. Thank you sir !
Advanced tutorials like this are a great way to learn how to use various program tools in a single video/project

Fantastic, Nick! Thanks for showing so many cool tidbits for node editing.
Really enjoyed picking up a bunch of little things that will help me improve and be more efficient.
Thanks for the awesome video. I noticed that on your original design you added a window glare effect that you missed here in the video. But I guess that adds a small challenge for the viewer to figure something out on their own.
Yeah I realize I missed that part after it was already recorded and edited
Excellent, Nick. I'm with you all the way.

I think it's a TARDIS cassette.
This tutorial is awesome! Instead of traditional lesson you teach with pratical approach! So fantastic!
Thank you nick. We need more of these kind of videos.
Beautiful, great tutorial
I love your tutorials so much! I often make graphical abstracts for material science papers and projects of our institute, and I'm happy with my work, but after watching your videos I always find a more elegant way of doing them.
Thank you very much!
As far as I could see, the tabe roll on the left maybe wouldn't fit in the case, but the tutorial was GREAT!
Inkscape is so full of features now I can't even imagine it can do...
Thank you Nick!
What ingenious solutions! Even an experienced Inkscaper learns a lot here. Thank you Nick!

Me too
same proble i am getting the nodes but when i move them entire design messes up
This really is such a great lesson. I'm always fascinated by how you're using mostly simple shapes and alterations to create such cool images and effects. I'm always asking myself how you come up with the way to get to your desired outcome.
Thanks Nick, you're the expert. All I know in Inkscape I learned it from you.
Wow! That was truly amazing. Thank you so much for sharing.
Sir, this is an amazing art. Thank you.
A cassette tape is 4 inch by 2.5. He set the rectangle size to 400 to 250. Nice touch.
Lucky guess!
Oh, the Set Clip and Shape Builder to remove the superfluous shapes - brilliant!
nice tutorial! i followed along and made my own with a few differences. is there a place where others can post their work?
Nick your videos are so helpful for me. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.
Finally a node i can get excited about

Amazing! Went all the way to the end. Thank you for such a great tutorial. Wish I could post a photo of the result here.
You can. Upload and post a link🤙🏽🤙🏽 try send file or even just a Google photos link.
Nice work Nick but I think you would be able to see the background colours through the tape content viewing pane. Also need a pencil to tighten the tape up ;-)

Clone = Array in CAD softwares
The reflection i asume it was a simple rectangle on top with some opacity right? great tutorial! good to see your workflow :)

@@jakep.7826 Thanks a lot !
Great video & very informative. Thanks
can anyone tell me at 1:26 how did he drew the rectangle in such way that it doesn't cut the previous one when i do it the new rectangle just cuts the previous rectangle
To fix that, I did fil color to the rectangle by background's color
😢I wanted to see the glare effect , but great video!
Just turn on your snaps, draw a rectangle inside the clear area, make it the size you want, click on it with the cursor to bring up the arrows, grab the horizontal arrow in the middle top or bottom to skew it, turn on a white fill and adjust the opacity down until you are happy with the look.

Oh I forgot to add you then reduce the opacity after choosing a suitable colour.
Hello, Nick. Maybe you could have more tutorials on three-dimensional text logos? I wanted to bevel mine for so long and yet I still don't know how!
Fantastic, thanks for the video 💯
Thank you for your work
Great job 👍
why the difference path function doesn't work when i work with the wheel thing?
شكرا Thanks it was helpful
THANKS.
forgot the glare on the cassette.
other than that great video, love your content. i started my graphics design journey from your content

I created it ...that was very awesome. ❤❤❤
Shapebuilder is dark magic.
It's only been here a few months and I already don't know how I ever lived without it
Really helpful as always. Cassette tape tape is brown from my experience. Pfft... details :).
Hey Nick, nice video and can make a tutorial about how to make Obama hope style design, that was great design and hope you can make this video, thank you and hope God bless you
This was a show. I didn't know Inkscape could do those things.
I am not geeting any nodes at the corners of the ribbons. So I cant round them now
Please Help!
You can select individual objects inside groups with Ctrl 🙂
Just saying because I see you ungroup them all the time to add color
great video altough not finish (you miss the glare). Keep going
WONDERFUUUUL
Hi. It is not working with Inkscape 1.4
Very Good !!!
Inkscape Rocks !! =oD
13:13 casual dexterity flex 😂
This might be just a coincidence, and probably is, but I enjoy the fact that the very next video after I suggested using the transformation handles on the nodes tool shows off that feature haha.

Great tutorial either way.
Pressing space while holding the object duplicate it as well
Не может быть на левой катушке столько пленки. Она не влезет в пределы корпуса кассеты по левому краю
Ohhhhh brilliant tutorial, if i UNION more objects i can difference all together....damn...i was copy each one to "difference" them....omg....i wasted my time until now, thanks for that °°°°
SET CLIP is also new...i am sad that i do not know what this stuff already do ^^,
👍👍
I can see 50 shades of grey here.....
SLOW DOWN! Thank you
tons of guesstimation went into this lol

Its for advance audition i guess...
He explained in the beginning what type of tutorial this would be.
How come you have not centered the lines to write the title of the tape!? Argh!!!!
you have to much tape on the left side. that would never work this way. ☉ ‿ ⚆
Your videos would be more helpful if you would SLOW DOWN! We’re here to learn and you talk and do things so fast even if I’m pausing every few seconds it’s almost impossible to follow.
exactly and he has moved on to advanced part in his 3rd video only
I only downloaded this program today, I used Photoshop years ago and gimp a few times, but I'm not a regular user. I followed the tutorial fine. 🤷
