There is another reaction video that compares both versions and he also commented that in the 10 year old version you can hear her wanting to do certain things but her voice had not matured enough to quite get there. She is different from everyone else in that she learned jazz singing as she learned to speak her native language(s) so the accents, timing, all of it are native to her and as natural as speaking because there is no difference to her, just another of her native languages.
She really knows how a microphone works, after watching alot of her videos and listening carefully its all there. At the beginning of my career in stage sound engineering i had the privilege to work for The International Montreal Jazz Festival and was lucky to watch Ella Fitzgerald , Sarah Vaughan and Tony Bennett in early 80's from backstage, they were masters with microphones. Loved the reaction, really nice to see a comparison of her singing the same song at different ages. Of all the thousands of artists who have performed this track, almost no one does that beginning part ( in the first video). Some artists go through complete metamorphosis ( egg, caterpillar, cocoon and butterfly) before becoming a star, AJ was born a butterfly!😎
I’m glad you didn’t feel the need to compare the two versions. I have loved the earlier one for years. Of course her voice is stronger and more resonant now, but Angelina’s younger performances stand on their own as the best we could ever hear from a 10 year old-or younger. The current version shows, I think, an extraordinary jazz voice that combines her unique phrasing with classic elements from the golden age of jazz singing. These two songs fit right in the cloud of my 30 or 40 Angelina favorites. The earlier version has a special place for me though because it’s so raw and unprocessed. Ten year old Angelina on her chair, so happy to perform for us, singing her heart out in one glorious take.
Once again thanks for taking my suggestions. My one disappointment from the 16 year old version is that it’s not live. IMO it’s her finest recording showing off everything she can do vocally. It’s simply beautiful to listen to. But there is just something so magical about young Angelina. She puts her heart and soul into everything she sings. She gets into the character of every song. I don’t think it’s intentional. It’s just who she is. Just like all these cool things you and other vocal coaches notice about her vocal techniques. I don’t believe she is ever thinking about what she needs to do to make a certain sound come out. It just happens, like breathing to the rest of us.
I agree. Angelina is who taught me what is truly a child prodigy. Just as she has stated in an interview about entering a different world when she sings, I believe she has two personas and one of them is a savant-like singer, who she can call upon at will. Her vocal artistry all appears spontaneous to me, and interviews with musicians who worked with her seem to support that.
@@dojoswitzer Interesting conjecture, not sure. I'd suggest that captures perhaps half of her artistry. I think there is a large component of hard work and perfectionism in there as well. I agree with you though that she CAN produce amazingly good work almost unrehearsed, but there are also hints if you listen closely to very heavy rehearsal sessions for eg the AGT performances, and perhaps a full month of studio work to produce IPASOY.
@@lengould9262 I get the impression you are implying that spontaneity is contradictory to hard work and perfectionism, but I do not see them a polar opposites. Quite the contrary, they facilitate spontaneity having exemplary results. Videos I have seen of rehearsals strongly suggest they are for the benefit of the instrumentals.

Enjoy your reactions very much! I love both versions, the 16 yr old version is technically better in every way, yet the 10 yr old version hits me a little more emotionally. Probably because she is visibly throwing everything she has into it.
I love both of these versions along with her 9 yo live version with piano & sax backing. To me the 10 yo & 16 yo versions are totally different. The former is the best child version ever, but the latter is absolute perfection & better than any legendary performance today or in the past, male or female, IMO. As far as I'm concerned, Angelina now owns this American jazz standard!!! It's also my current favorite performance by Angelina, I just wish we could see her performing it.

Neither one is any less impressive than the other. Shows the consistency of improvement over time, built on an already solid foundation. With your technical knowledge it would be a nice format to do this with most of Angelinas music. A younger version and a current version to discuss comparisons, improvements, what has changed and what hasn't changed. Maybe even three if they are short enough. 😄

The vocal skill of Angelina at any age is mind boggling and she does it with such ease, a true prodigy. Grace Slick would vary her vibrato speed which made her sound so distinctive.

Her Melismas (run's) are a part of her... Of COURSE she's going to sound better, but a young age she knew in her mind what she wanted to do . You should know that recently AJ sang for Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffatt. She did "I Have Nothing"--the entire song--sitting in the Lotus meditation position. @@dojoswitzerI've heard the phone recording theory for the Fanclub recording, but I can't see how that accounts for the backing instrumentals being audible in the booth. That's what I find so puzzling. I also happen to love that entire take, even with the lyric flaw. It moves me more than the final recording does, as great as that mix is.
@@capstan50g I don’t understand your comment. Very light instrumentals can be heard in link you provide, which makes sense because the instruments are in a different room. The full mixed vocal and instrumentals can be heard in the link I provided, because a separately recorded sound track replaces the phone audio.
@@dojoswitzer I see what you're saying, although the final track from the album is different than the take she's recording in the video. In a professional studio it's unlikely that the instruments would be heard at all in the vocal booth where a live mic could pick them up as background noise The instrument sounds would be only in Angelina's headphones, and wouldn't be picked up by a phone mic in the same room. That's my mystery about the original audio. I'm guessing that Grandma Mery arranged for a live feed from the mixing board, or maybe got the vocal take and the background instruments pre-mixdown as a separate recording and then synced it to the video she captured with her phone in a video editor. I just don't have good enough ears or enough experience in the studio to know how it was done.
In the FanClub video, much background noise (rustling) is heard and she stubbles on the words at 1:44. The dubbed version has background noise for only the first 5 seconds, and later the album cover image slides across the screen to conceal the mismatch between the video and audio.

Spelling good? Age has got nothing to do do with it. We've heard her speaking since she was a 7yo little,cute,charming little girl up until now, a cute,charming beautifull Lady. That's when she speaks but then she puts on her " performer hat" and becomes: Billie, Aretha, Etta, Rhianna, Adele, Whitney as well as Bob, John, Michael, Sam, Elvis, Lewis...etc. the list is long. According to the song she's about to sing she decides wich style and wich Voice ro use. She can do them all. I’m glad you didn’t feel the need to compare the two versions. I have loved the earlier one for years. Of course her voice is stronger and more resonant now, but Angelina’s younger performances stand on their own as the best we could ever hear from a 10 year old-or younger. The current version shows, I think, an extraordinary jazz voice that combines her unique phrasing with classic elements from the golden age of jazz singing. These two songs fit right in the cloud of my 30 or 40 Angelina favorites. The earlier version has a special place for me though because it’s so raw and unprocessed. Ten year old Angelina on her chair, so happy to perform for us, singing her heart out in one glorious take.

Once again thanks for taking my suggestions. My one disappointment from the 16 year old version is that it’s not live. IMO it’s her finest recording showing off everything she can do vocally. It’s simply beautiful to listen to. But there is just something so magical about young Angelina. She puts her heart and soul into everything she sings. She gets into the character of every song. I don’t think it’s intentional. It’s just who she is. Just like all these cool things you and other vocal coaches notice about her vocal techniques. I don’t believe she is ever thinking about what she needs to do to make a certain sound come out. It just happens, like breathing to the rest of us.
I agree. Angelina is who taught me what is truly a child prodigy. Just as she has stated in an interview about entering a different world when she sings, I believe she has two personas and one of them is a savant-like singer, who she can call upon at will. Her vocal artistry all appears spontaneous to me, and interviews with musicians who worked with her seem to support that.
@@dojoswitzer Interesting conjecture, not sure. I'd suggest that captures perhaps half of her artistry. I think there is a large component of hard work and perfectionism in there as well. I agree with you though that she CAN produce amazingly good work almost unrehearsed, but there are also hints if you listen closely to very heavy rehearsal sessions for eg the AGT performances, and perhaps a full month of studio work to produce IPASOY.

I love both of these versions along with her 9 yo live version with piano & sax backing. To me the 10 yo & 16 yo versions are totally different. The former is the best child version ever, but the latter is absolute perfection & better than any legendary performance today or in the past, male or female, IMO. The vocal skill of Angelina at any age is mind boggling and she does it with such ease, a true prodigy. Grace Slick would vary her vibrato speed which made her sound so distinctive.

You should know that recently AJ sang for Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffatt. She did "I Have Nothing"--the entire song--sitting in the Lotus meditation position. I love the first version. One of my favourites.
She went to a special school, the Oslo Waldorf School, that adds music and arts to the courses. She was taught how to take the music and remake it, taught to play 5 instruments, and how to arrange. That is were she was 6, in the studio, that was her teacher in the video.
At 16:50 we see in the mirror reflection the piano used in Suspicious Minds. So, it makes me wonder how closely together the three videos made in this store were recorded.

Angelina also possibly has a larger larynx than most woman have which would tend to allow producing a lower tonal quality. With Angelina singing/practicing for 15 years, this would then allow for continual strengthening of her vocal muscles. We know that Angelina can move her larynx up and/or down which also allows changes in one's tones. On top of this, Angelina has developed excellent breath control that is quite consistent (which is usually hard for most singers to accomplish at an early age)

@@dojoswitzerI've heard the phone recording theory for the Fanclub recording, but I can't see how that accounts for the backing instrumentals being audible in the booth. That's what I find so puzzling. I also happen to love that entire take, even with the lyric flaw. It moves me more than the final recording does, as great as that mix is.

The full mixed vocal and instrumentals can be heard in the link I provided, because a separately recorded sound track replaces the phone audio.
@@dojoswitzer I see what you're saying, although the final track from the album is different than the take she's recording in the video. In a professional studio it's unlikely that the instruments would be heard at all in the vocal booth where a live mic could pick them up as background noise The instrument sounds would be only in Angelina's headphones, and wouldn't be picked up by a phone mic in the same room. That's my mystery about the original audio. I'm guessing that Grandma Mery arranged for a live feed from the mixing board, or maybe got the vocal take and the background instruments pre-mixdown as a separate recording and then synced it to the video she captured with her phone in a video editor. I just don't have good enough ears or enough experience in the studio to know how it was done.
In the FanClub video, much background noise (rustling) is heard and she stubbles on the words at 1:44. The dubbed version has background noise for only the first 5 seconds, and later the album cover image slides across the screen to conceal the mismatch between the video and audio.
