Are knitted shorts better than crochet shorts? I decided to conduct a little (but long) experiment.
*Instead of the "short rows" category, I think "fit" or "shaping" would have been a better name in hindsight.
These two shorts were my first ones ever. I figured my lack of experience would be a nice little control variable seeing as I had no prior experience of creating legged bottoms with yarn.
To make things a little more fair, I also attempted each pair with minimal preparation and no patterns or tutorials were followed in the making of this or the previous video!
In other words, I could have saved myself a whole bunch of time, but where would the fun be in that?
“Better” is an incredibly subjective term to use in this context, and as a short disclaimer, this is an opinion piece based on the tiny sample size of… my own experiences.
To see how the crochet version was made, here’s my previous video:

crochet is def easier than knitting but knitting garments looks way better than crocheting garments

Wouldn't say "definitely". It differs from person to person, for instance I cannot seem to get the hang of crochet, however I find knitting much easier and can do some of the most advanced patterns with ease. But I can barely make a crochet chain. 😂

i agree that’s why i forced myself to learn how to knit i just think the stitching looks so much fancier and high quality

I agree with so much!! I’ve been crocheting since I was a little girl but am very new to knitting and I’m nowhere near creating knitting patterns yet. I do love the simplicity of crochet and how quickly it works up, but it doesn’t hold a candle to the drape of a knit piece! I LOVE the elegance of knitted items, which is what drove me to learn in the first place.

I can definitely relate when it comes to learning one later than the other, and I agree they're both great for those reasons. It's so good to hear about embracing both! Thank you for sharing this! 😊

I'm nowhere near the level of knitting shorts yet, but why not crocheting the waistband and knitting the legs of the shorts? I'm more adept at crocheting but I envy the drapery of the knitted short in this video.

For the crochet waistband, you could increase the number of stitches to make it taller. Once it's tall enough, you can fold it in half, insert the elastic, and close it by crocheting through both sides. I hope that makes sense!

Was totally on the same page! Tried the folded band with elastic first, but it ended up being way too bulky (I forgot to record it so didn't include it in the video 😔). It would have worked so well with a lighter yarn weight!

For crochet I find using a slip stitch on the edge makes it tighter and more stable. Ribbing often gets loose so I combat it with a slip stitch finish.

next time to keep the elastic from fraying you could melt the edges with a lighter, bc it really does get annoying, I hate working with elastic bands lol
