No not necessarily. A lot of the machines have the snowman feature, so I often teach using it. You can use the plastic grid and a standard hoop instead. I just like the snowman.
Hi Linda! It's not difficult to quilt a larger quilt, it just takes a lot of hooping. I usually put the larger ones on my longarm instead. I quilt small stuff all the time with Clear Blue Tiles

Do the marks come back on your quilt when the fabric gets cold?
Sometimes they do, but I just iron it again and they go away. Depends on the temperature
