Hey there, and thank you! I'm not a fan of Durham's because of how brittle it can be. That's not to say it wouldn't work as I haven't tried it, but I would first test it for adhesion and workability and go from there. Body filler (i.e., Bondo) is very workable and because of its consistency, has worked great for seams, drop edges, rock edges, etc. If you try it, please keep me posted as Durham's could be a viable option. Thanks for watching, and here's my email if you'd like to reach out: Keith@kcdcdesigns.com
I love this. I’ve been wanting to do a project like this since Rhonda did her arrowhead table. Turned out amazing, love the colors. I learned the hard way too with those cups. They stuck. Lol. I followed your advice with the router bit sizes and came out good. Thanks bud
Thank you, Jessica and that's great to hear on the router bit!!! PS - Rhonda's arrowhead table was my inspiration as well, I just didn't want to copy the arrowhead shape, lol.
I love this Thanks for sharing I'm going to do a sign for my sons new business and the idea of doing it with foam had crossed my mind but I was not sure how I would do it but seeing this helped me make up my mind not to figure out the design with using rex and it not look like blood lol.
Thanks, Amey! How fun creating a sign for your son's new business! Be sure to share your results! The foam is such a great alternative and lightweight as well! I debated on adding the fiber mesh to my project but opted not to and have no regrets. If it were a much larger project I might consider it to make it more rigid. Thanks again!
@@kcdcdesigns IThat is what I was wanting yo know do I have to do the mesh it will be inside maybe around the same size as yours.I will be sure to share.
Amey, I honestly don't feel it's necessary at that size. If I were using 1/2" foam I probably would, to make it more rigid. But this one, at 1" thick with a color coat and flood coat, it's still very rigid. Actually, I would only put down fiber mesh if it were very large, and/or if I had to seam pieces together, and/or if I was worried about not having a solid base underneath it before pouring. On this one, I put 3/4" plywood underneath it (just a bit smaller than the project) to prevent it from sagging in areas once I applied the epoxy. You really want a good solid base for it to sit on, especially on large pieces such as shower walls. PS - Even on Rhonda's big back-drop they didn't use mesh. Shower walls though I certainly would!
Really cool piece! You've inspired me to try this. BTW...there's a video on RK3 explaining how to get rid of the glare on your picture. I think it's some sort of filter on the camera. :)
Thank you, Cathee! I have since added a polarized lens to my GoPro which does help some. For pouring, my lighting is great, for filming, not so much. Thank you again for your kind words!
This is gorgeous, Keith! What was the reason for no flood coat? If I want to make a table tray or something similar would I not need the flood coat? TIA! ~The Prop Spot Shannon
Thank you, Shannon! I think I did add a flood coat but if I did not, it would have only been because it is a wall-art piece. I would always recommend a flood coat unless it's wall art or maybe shower panels if a dirty pour is applied, using 8-10 oz/sf. Even table trays, especially because it's such a small surface and there's rarely (if ever) a disadvantage to a flood coat.
Thank you! I personally would not use foam as a table top, if it's going to get any type of hard use (heavy objects, etc.). If not hard use, I would be sure to apply the fibermesh to add strength to it, then I think you'd be okay.
Keith, I’m very new to the epoxy world and I would love to make this beautiful wall hanging, I’m not sure where I would get colors you used in your demonstration, would you mind Sharing the colors and where I buy them, I have looked for them at. Stone Coat and Amazon! Thank You Lynn
Hi Lynn, and welcome to the epoxy world 😁. Thank you! Although it's been done, epoxy resin (of any kind) is not meant for continuous outdoor exposure, especially in climates that experience extreme hot/cold temps, exposure to sun, rain, snow, etc. That being said, if it's under a covered area, and darker colors are used, it could potentially last for years without degradation.
Hey Keith. Question on your undercoat. Are you concerned that if you don’t paint the back that you will get some sort of warping with material on the front and none on the back?
Hi Pete, it's interesting you ask that. On one piece (12" x 24") I painted the back and now have bubbles that have appearedf on the topside. On the larger piece that you see in the video, I did not paint the backside and have no such bubbles. Keep in mind I did not apply the fibermesh and Quick Coat to either piece but I'm now wondering if there are some gases that are in the foam that are trying to escape from the one I painted. If so, I would think they would escape easier from the painted side than the epoxied side, but until I cut the bubbles to see where it separated, I won't know for sure, so that's just speculation and I'll keep you posted. I don't foresee any warping, and although the large bubbles in the epoxy are concerning, I'm confident they wouldn't be there had I applied the mesh and Quick Coat.
@@petercarels I discovered what happened. I added bondo to the top surface to add some texture and I'm guessing the heat generated from it reacted with the foam.
