Float Ledgering with a Polaris Float

- Float Ledgering with a Polaris Float. A few weeks ago, I produced a video showing you how to use a normal waggler float for float ledgering in relatively shallow water. But what happens if you are fishing waters which are too deep to comfortably fish with a normal waggler?
The answer lies in using either a Polaris or Locslide float. These floats are specifically designed for this purpose. Watch the video to see how its done.

Been using these floats for many years. Fantastic method, caught me hundreds of big fish.
These floats really work.
Great video. I have used the other type of ledger float and can say the best thing is being able to locate the spot to put in some loose feed.
Hi Den, just had two Polaris floats delivered, can’t wait to try them. My wife said, “more fishing stuff in the post again “, I said it’s your fault you make it look so good. Keep the videos going, really enjoy them. Tried your ground-bait mix yesterday, good results, catching roach and bream.
That's excellent news Andrew. I'm glad my videos are helping you.
Greetings from Yorkshire . I’ve had a set of Polaris floats for donkeys and never known exactly how to set them up so never used them. Your video has made it perfectly clear Den.
Cheers Cawky 🇬🇧👍🏻
No worries Cawky. I'm glad it helped.
Cheers Den...glad ur on the mend fella.
Brilliant Den great video again 🎣👍
Great video again Den! One of my club’s waters is 25 - 30 feet deep two rod lengths out. The only way to float fish the bottom is with a sliding float, I use the locslide but the principle is identical. I mainly fish it with a feeder but sometimes you can’t beat seeing a float go under! Like you did, I often use a cage feeder but a maggot feeder works really nicely as well. Those mullet look like really good sport, I imagine much like a decent trout.
Thanks Richard. I must go back and have another go for them.
Good video Den! Might just give these floats a try! Thank you.
This brought back fond memories. I had one of these in my tackle bag and used it once for river bream where I couldn’t hold bottom in a deep fast flow , too deep for trotting, and only had a float rod. It worked really well and I had an excellent haul during the session… but then I never used it again, and I honestly do not know why. After an almost 25 year absence from the bank I recently returned to the sport, two weeks ago. When sorting out good kit from bad I found one of these floats ….. and ignored it. Today I found your video. Needless to say the Polaris has been promoted back into my tackle box.
Thanks for your comments Paul. I hadn't used one for a long time either, but like you I will probably use it more often now.😃👍
Thanks Den, I've got one of those floats but never been able to fish with it. Can't wait to give it a try now
Excellent Geoff. I think a lot of people have one or two of these floats which have been sitting in their tackle box for years, but they didn't know how to use them.
Thanks Den for the beautiful video and the great tips for fishing with the polaris float ! 👍👍👍👋
No worries Danny. Thanks for your comments.
I've been using them for a long time, really like them. Never seen Mullet caught from a stillwater either....that's a first.
Thanks for your comments. I stopped using them years ago, but doing this video has given me a appreciation of their uses again, so I will be starting to use them more often. The Mullet are in the lake because the tidal river just behind it floods into every now and then.
Great video again Den. super informative as usual
Thanks Neil.
I use those kind of floats all the time, I used to buy them from Mick Thill at sport fishing shows in the states, he had older stock when he had control over the quality. I also purchased some Match floats from Britan and Italy from him, along with a great selection of spade hooks and a fantastic selection of line, i didn't realize they made line that light. Ended up buying my fishing supplies from Tackle Bargains UK. Now after watching your float making vids, I might have to try it myself.
Go for it Dan. Making your own floats saves money. It's also very enjoyable to catch fish on something you made yourself.
cheer Den just watched this 3 years late lol . Hope you are getting there mate take care love the this vid
Thanks Colin. There are probably lots of others mate. I think I have over 250 videos now.😁😁👍👍
Excellent presentation.
Nice Den. can't wait till the ice melts here in Canada to try this on the carp for sure.
Thanx for the great video.
Definitely give it a try mate. Thanks for the nice comments.
Fantastic video, Den! Thank you for uploading!
I tried out this technique yesterday evening and only caught 3 fish over the 4 hour session but I learned a lot about what to do and what not to do just from trying it out myself! Today I found this video which was really useful and gave me hope for the next session (tomorrow!) where I’ll be trying the locslide/Polaris float again and hopefully I’ll have a more fruitful day!
Many thanks again!
Tom :)
Thanks Tom. I'm glad my video helped you out. Tight lines mate.
Really enjoyed that Den 👍
Thanks Robert.
Famous last cast . Thanks Den
It's always the same Darren mate. Thanks for your comments.
got two of these in my float tube nice vlog Den
Thanks Barbara
Great video, Den...
Thanks Elo. I haven't heard much from you lately. Stay Safe mate.
Only problem I had with these was some years back I was fishing a very deep pit. on an old float and I grooved the slot and the float just went flat after a time. Great vid again inspired me to give it another try on newer float.
Glad you enjoyed it Phillip.
Hi Den, particularly enjoyed this one, fun way to fish. Thanks
Thanks Kenneth. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
@@FishingwithDen Hi Den, perhaps you could do one on locslide, as a comparison. Both companies do versions you can use in shallower water.
@@kennethswayne874 I don't think I will Kenneth. It would probably be too similar to this one.
Hi m8 , sorry I forgot to say great video, 👍 👌 keep up the great work you are doing and be safe to you and your family 👪 😊 from colin bradford in Milton Keynes in the uk 🇬🇧 😀
Very enjoyable ❤
Once again, great informative video. Reminds me a bit of the videos of John Wilson back in the day 😊
That's high praise indeed Jeroen. Thanks mate. By the way, my 3D Printer finally arrived yesterday, but I won't have time to set it up until after next week. I am going on a fishing holiday with some friends. Videos to follow. Lol.
@@FishingwithDen it finally arrived!! Curious what you come up with. You know where to find me if you need help.
Have fun on your fishing holiday Den 👍🏼
@@timmerenator Thanks Jeroen. Give me 2 or 3 weeks and I'll see about doing a video showing some of the things I have in mind. I've got to get it set up first. There are so many parts! It looks more like a complicated 3D Jigsaw puzzle! Lol.
@@FishingwithDen 😂
Hi Den. I use polaris floats for years now. They are indeed so easy to use and I love to see a float go under instead of a feeder tip bending. All positive aspects of this float you've explained and in my opinion it has no downsides. It's strange you don't see them used more often. At least not here in the Netherlands. Thx for sharing this lovely vid. 👍🏻
Another good vlog Den. Nice to see something other than carp coming out
Thanks Rob. I would love to catch some Roach, Bream, Tench and Chub, but unfortunately, there aren't any in my arera.
@@FishingwithDen You can only catch what's in front of you. Those mullet certainly look like good scrappers.
@@bampah They are great fun Rob, but the bites are so aggravating. Lol.
Not to many lefties about, can't trust em😂😂. Enjoyed as always 👍👍
Appreciated you filming on a overcast day Den.... so you do get rain then 😉 Good angling working out they were mullet 👍 I fish for them on the River Taff occasionally they tail walk and never give up, you had some clacking fish 👍
Hi Geoff. I think Mullet provide some of the most aggravating bites of all species, but they are fantastic fighters. Do you fish for them off the bottom? As for rain, we have had quite a lot of it this year. The La Nina effect has hit our region, so the Summer has been cooler and wetter.
@@FishingwithDen Evening Den no I don’t, small chuber float with shot under the float just to cock it then trot it down the river. Loaf of bread in the blender feed every run down, you can see them working up the trail of crum, small piece on the hook....I liked your camera shots of the float going under 👍
@@geoff738 Thanks Geoff.
Hi Den
We have a small lake called Swan pool he in Cornwall with land locked mullet in was good fun but the council turned it into a natural reserve and stopped the fishing
Great video
Hi Bri. That's a shame, those Mullet would have provided great sport.
Thanks and nice timing Den! Watched your twizzled boom video last week and made some up, purchased a few feeders and rig bits and had planned to just plumb and slide a float - but this video had me hitting the online shops again! (Have you considered adding affiliate links?).
Can't wait to give this a go... now all I need is the dear leader of the peoples republic of Wales to let compliant citizens go out fishing again.
I'm glad my video helped mate. I did try Affiliate Links for a while, but it never produced anything. Most people just go down to their local tackle shop. Stay Safe and I hope the Dear leader's Lockdown ends as soon as possible. Lol.
Hi Den gave you done a video on your adjustment to the float
Really explosive fish them freshwater mullet. Very nice 👌
Thanks Zoli. They are the fastest fish I have ever caught.
@@FishingwithDen I was just looking around for info about this method just yesterday, and you just posted exactly what I wanted to know. Much appreciated. I will give it a try myself.
Excellent video.
Thanks Patrick.
@@FishingwithDen Just came across the video channel tonight by chance, these are very informative, and well made. Been fishing for fifty years and learnt quite a few things in the last few hrs. Was a bit confused until l noted you're in Australia. Keep them coming, will share with my fishing club, mainly fish The Trent for Barbel.
Tight lines.
@@patrickwhaley4111 Thanks Patrick. I would be interested in your input on my new video where I 3D Printed a prototype Hybrid Feeder. Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/aonzQR-6bEs/видео.html As you and your club fish for Barbel on the River Trent, you probably use Method Feeders from time to time. My river Carp fishing down here will be somewhat similar, so any advice or thoughts on modifications to the new feeder would be greatly appreciated.
I've already watch it, looks like an excellent idea, for slower moving rivers +lakes, I'm not sure about faster cuttents though, but l think I'd be taking a patent out on the design as someone at Korda will be selling them for £3.00 a time next year if they see the video.
I make my own feeders for the fast stretches of Trent both none and tidal, with 4,5,6,7,8oz lead moulds and 30mm plastic hair curlers. To buy them at this weight would cost a fortune, that's when you can get them at that weight.
With the speed of the current in most areas of the river, its usually a 3 to 6 ft hook length from the feeder to compensate for the drift of the loose feed from the open ended feeder.
I'm not sure if the cup on your hybrid feeder could be slightly larger on one side to act as a 'current guard' to keep the current from sweeping the loose feed away from the hook bait, but if would obviously require testing.
Over here there's are no method feeders of such large size to be of us on the faster sections of the Trent.
Most anglers if not using large open ended feeders use large gripper leads with PVA socks for loose feed. A successful trick is to use two, one on the hook bait and one on the gripper lead, so you get a line of loose bait.
@@patrickwhaley4111 That's really helpful Patrick. Thank you. Tonight's video shows the basic testing of the new feeders, but it looks as though there may be quite a few variations before I get it absolutely right.😃👍
Very helpful video again. Ive just started fishing again first time since a kid and watching your videos helped. First time in a pool and had a few problems with float fishing with depth assoon i took plummet of i wasnt casting the same distance so inaccurate adjustment.
After finding this video it seems alot easier in pools but can you use at any depth ie shallow part of the pool. Planning on using this with a ledger with a hook to nylon. Is there anything you need to do with the depth as thats what i was struggling most with.
Thanks again for useful videos
Have a look at this video Lee. ruclips.net/video/l4omnunNaAM/видео.html It should help with your question.
Those mullet look fun!
I too am going to look in on some Polaris floats, and do more float fishing in general.
Just did a search and didn’t see any Polaris fishing floats; perhaps no longer made?
There's definitely something about watching a float go under, isn't there Brian.
Try Ebay or Amazon Plenty available :-)
Great video Den thanks for sharing it. Where was you fishing or is it top secret lol 😂
Thanks Peter. It not exactly Top Secret, it's near Newcastle in New South Wales Australia.😁👍
Those mullet look to be great fun! have you tried the Polaris with an in-line feeder Den
No mate. To be honest, I haven't used a Polaris float for years. I did the video because some of my viewers were asking for it.
Thanks from Lithuania for your video. Just one ask you , may you can drop the link for buy Polaris
float with different colored changed tips.
Can't find.

Thanks for your comments. I'm afraid there are no Polaris floats with interchangeable tips as far as I know. I modified my own floats so I could use my range of interchangeable tips with them. if you want to see how I do this, here's a link to my Playlist covering how I make my own floats: ruclips.net/p/PL1-iJW0W-2_mpAIwPFbpns0OfwzsjQ-Kk
One more cast....one more cast.... next thing you know it's dark and you're packing up without a torch!! :)
Yep!!!
Thanks for clearing up the Polaris Den great information Them mullet sure look like a experience but just to clarify some points I am assuming you are using a Feeder rod because of the bomb but would it work with a float rod and could you use a baitrunner reel on the Feeder rod Cheers mate.
Hi Alan. Actually, I was using a Float rod, it was the Daiwa Yank n Bank 12ft model. I'm not sure why you thought I was using a feeder rod mate. As for the bait runner reel, there is no reason why you can't use one if you want to. I hope that helps.
Cheers for that Den l thought Feeder because of the bomb and cage feeder l suppose you can use either yes Cheers mate.
Hi, I really like this float. Where else can I buy one (or more) of them? :)
All self-locking floats are out of stock on the polaris site.
Sorry. I haven't bought one of these floats for years.
Just started fishing again, havent been since the last century. Had used sliders fairly succesfully in the past. The amount of new kit and "systems" have a mix of improvements and fad nonsense biut one thing I will be trying is PVA mesh. Has anybody tried this with a slider rig?
hi dan, i have the same camcorder (sony 405?) and want to do float fishing filming, what settings have you got it set up with?
Hi. my Camcorder is slightly different to yours. I believe I have a PJ410, but they are probably more or less the same. I just set mine to record in 1080p Resolution and that's about it. I have also downloaded the imaging Edge App on my phone. This enables you to connect to it via WiFi. You can then see what the camera is seeing without having to bend down to see the main camcorder screen. It also allows you to Zoom in/out using the App. Be careful with the Audio though. I have my camcorder on the front leg of my seatbox to zoom in on the float. This means that the audio isn't the best. If you are using it as a general camera, like I use my GoPro, it should be fine.
@@FishingwithDen ah your setup is much better! mine is a cheap old model without wifi but thanks for the help, I'll get used to stooping down lol
Hi Den! There's something magical about watching a float. A waggler virgin, I tried a waggler float last summer at my local lake (watched your videos on it!). A huge carp took my bait on the drop, very first cast and dove into the lillies! 1 minute later my 6lbs line snapped and my very expensive Garbelino float was last seen looking very smug mocking me in the middle of the lilly patch!
So, my question. I am a disabled angler and I'm not looking to land huge fish, so I've tied a few helicopter rigs with 4" hooklengths size 12 hooks, a twizzled boom and a feeder on the end. I was wondering if I could use this float ledger method on this rig? I have some weighted and unweighted wagglers, could I use them running freely? Or do I really need to get a specialist polaris float?
Thanks, Ceri.
Hi Ceri. If the water you are fishing is the usual 4ft deep, you can use a normal waggler to fish the Float Ledger rig. You can even go deeper than this, but I would say that 8ft is probably the deepest I would want to go with a normal waggler. I did a video on this too. Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/l4omnunNaAM/видео.html 😃👍
@@FishingwithDen Thanks Den! Hoping to go fishing next week, will try the waggler on the line. I will get my hands on a polaris float too, i'm intrigued to try it! Tight lines!

Hi den , can you do a video of how to use a swing tip, as I can not do a quiver tip as I'm have tunnel vision and registered partlysited. 😉
Hi Colin. Sorry mate, I can't do the video you requested because I don't even own a Swingtip anymore. I can't remember what happened to my old ones, but it's been such a long time since I used one and they could have got lost during the move to OZ.
Hi den again and thank you for the link for this video. The one thing thats slightly confuses me with using the slider is as far as i know you still have to plumb the depth initially but how can you plumb the depth when may be deeper then the rod your using? When using a bomb mainly how light can you get away it like 2 swan shots weight wise? Last question do you know the actual float you were using for this video
Hi Martin. Are you talking about a Slider Float or a Polaris Float here. They are completely different, so I need a bit more information please.
Hi den sorry it didn't really make sense when reading back i was taking about them both . The first part was about the slider and my question is when trying to find the depth and if the depth is deeper still then your rod is it just about adjusting the stop knot as the slider float once in the water will travel up and will only stop once it it's the stop knot so it can take a period of time ? Yes I know the polaris float is completely different and finds its depth which I think appeals to me more as it will find the depth quicker and there's no stop knot needed going through it the rings. My question about the polaris which may be depending on what size polaris float you use but what the lightest wait you can get away with on one of these floats to still work? And what polaris float were you using on the video? Den your videos are really great to watch and I'm very impressed mate .
@@martinhassall7884 Hi Martin. All I do to plumb the depth with a Slider Float is put a shot (SSG or AAA) either on the hook or immediately above it and then cast out as normal. If it sinks, your too shallow and if it floats your too deep. If the float does show above the water, take a foot of depth off and cast again until the float sinks. Repeat this process until the float just sinks, then you can add just a little more depth until the bait is on the bottom and the float tip sits normally. With regard to the Polaris Floats, the one I was using has a sticker on the side which says 6 - 10ft 3/4oz. I hope that helps.
Den thank you very much that's perfect.
Just wondering how the Mullet got into the lake and assume it is a lake? are they land locked as usually move from fresh water to brackish or sea water.
We had a massive flood in 2015 and the creek behind the lake overflowed into it. The creek is brackish as you say, so I can only assume they got in that way.
@@FishingwithDen was going to ask the same Q myself
What size bomb weights do you use ?
I use at least half an ounce John. The maximum weight depends on how far out I need to fish, how deep it is and the weather conditions.
Hi Den, just back from a day’s fishing using the Polaris float with a cage feeder then a bomb on worm and sweet corn, lots of quick bites but only two brought to the net. I knew you said it was a sensitive method but I couldn’t fathom why I wasn’t hooking them. Any suggestions? Andrew
What were you fishing for Andrew?
Bream, perch and roach!
@@andrewbrown8697 Yes. Those fish can definitely be a bit finicky, but if the float goes under, you should still hook them mate.
Thanks Den, I will persevere as I enjoyed much more than ledgering, there’s something about a float!
@@andrewbrown8697 Exactly mate.
Damn those mullet look mega fun. Are they slimy like bream tho? Must try this method, my lake is average 15lb carp, bin lid bream and some good roach/perch as well as tiddlers. The thing is it gets deep quickly making float fishing the bottom any further than 2 rod lengths out a bit of a mare. Cheers
They are great fun. Not particularly slimy, but they do have an odd spiky bit here and there.
@@FishingwithDen having researched some on here I see they’re a sea fish. Do you get many freshwater venues with these in? I’m a carp fisherman in Essex but definitely interested in finding somewhere with these lil buggers in. Cheers.
@@EricPollarrd I live in Australia nowadays mate. So when the estuary rivers overflow, we get Mullet in the freshwater lakes.
@@FishingwithDen oh that might explain it 😂😂 cheers
@@FishingwithDen hi again Den, I tried this for the first time recently and found myself unsure as to where my lead and hook are in relation to the float. The way I saw it was if I’ve trapped the line before it hits the water (like usual) so as to avoid any tangles etc then let the bail arm off after a few seconds settle, would the float be rising up vertically or at a 45 degree angle? I need to know in order to catapult bait in the right area in relation to the float. It was anything from 10 to 20 yards out where the depth is 10-12ft, so I don’t really know how to figure out the likely distance beyond the float that the hookbait would be laying..but if it’s sliding up at a 45 degree angle or so then by the time it’s come up all of 12ft it could actually be a fair way away from the hookbait no?
Would it make a difference altering the initial distance between float and lead before casting or not? Any tips on that ? Cheers
👍
My secret spot you get lot of mullet there ,no carp there Dennis lol, that's carp taking you in the weed that's what has been happening to me there they go straight into that weed close to t the bank
