    Building company with your own money need lot of patience, guts and perseverance.

  • @karthikranga

    This video is pure gold! Kudos to Caleb for presenting and kudos to the research team!
    Lot of lessons form this story.
    This is what scares me as prospective entrepreneur that getting kicked out of your own company/dream/idea? I am here for the long run with a vision and mission, and I don't want to get kicked out(My mind voice be like, I haven't started my startup and why am I worried about getting kicked out😂)
    And the only way is to have deep pockets to own the company? I can put my blood, sweat and tears but money? I think the only way is to build a startup exit, cash out and use that money to build another startup?
    And it's a whole new ball game when it comes to hardware + software startups. As just a software or SaaS based startups, your resource requirement is quite low as compared to hardware. But what he is doing or have done is really amazing and hope Navi as a company succeeds and Sachin as an entrepreneur becomes what he wishes to be.

    • @backstagewithmillionaires

      Thank you so much Karthik, so glad you enjoyed the video and story within. I think raising venture capital really is the only path for a lot of entrepreneurs who want to build fast (5-10 years fast, rather than multiple decades). The multi-decade thing can work if you start small from a bootstrapped startup (which you exit and get rich from), then pour that wealth into your next business. Elon Musk took this approach I think, with PayPal (not sure if that was bootstrapped or funded), then Tesla, then SpaceX/Boring and now Twitter.
      Hardware though, as you said, is next to impossible to bootstrap. So I think the only way it works is if you have a huge TAM and there isn't a big threat of competition wiping you out. With this, you can own less than 10% of your company and still walk away filthy rich to build something new in the future (which is basically what happened with Flipkart, although it wasn't a hardware play). -Caleb

    Good video.
    But guys before taking loan out of any NBFCs such as Navi, make sure to compare it with interests elsewhere.
    NBFCs charge insanely high interests which hurts you in long term.
    Make sure the reason of you borrowing money is worth bearing that pressure.
    Also NBFCs are notorious for using unethical recovery method, so yeah speculate nicely before taking loans.
    Don't just celebritify these founders and blindly trust their products.

    • @backstagewithmillionaires
      @backstagewithmillionaires  2 года назад +4

      Actually, universal banking licenses are issued very rarely from what I've understood - Navi's approach was extremely unusual and bold, and I think the odds were unfortunately stacked against them from the start. They did everything they could, but their approach seems to have been too atypical for the RBI to approve. -Caleb

    Great video. Did not understand what problem navi as a startup is solving though

    • @backstagewithmillionaires
      @backstagewithmillionaires  2 года назад +8

      I think the problem is the shallow penetration of official financial services (loans and insurance) in India. They’re two sides of the same coin: insurance protects you when things go wrong with your health or your vehicle, and loans protect you when things go wrong with your finances - this one is a double edge sword, but the alternative is borrowing from family and friends or loan sharks (which can turn into bonded labour/slavery), so proper insurance/access to loans is important. It seems like Navi has identified the untapped potential in the Indian market for financial services, and wants to penetrate that market with tech and automation in ways that traditional banks, which are slow, lumbering institutions built for the pre-internet/smartphone world, have not done effectively (this is where the startup mentality comes in, to disrupt these legacy banks).
      That’s my understanding anyways. Their plans have been sort of derailed by the RBI’s rejection though, so I’m not sure what this means for them. -Caleb

    In my opinion, this is a very wrong time to go public. The company gonna lose its current market valuation within the first week and after anchor investors exit after a month, the valuation gonna fall further down.
    I'm not much concerned about the PAN issue, because all banks do have the details but then they will take care to hash the PAN details in their SMSs. But I'm really disappointed with NAVI's decision to force users to use the same phone for a long period, this kind of company decision shows the immaturity and lack of sight. God knows what more stupid rules they keep post IPO

      while e-commerce in India is not far behind than that in usa, financial markets in India is eons behind than that in usa
      further India's e-commerce has seen wide acceptance, but Indians generally have very poor financial habits and education
      to crack the financial markets in India by NAVI will NOT be easy because it is a highly regulated sector unlike e-commerce and growth will be quite slower than those seen in e-commerce
      I don't think US investors will be much interested to go through such headache; as foreign presence in banking and financial sector is NOT much preferred in any country as it undermines sovereignty.

    • @backstagewithmillionaires
      @backstagewithmillionaires  2 года назад +3

      That’s actually not always the primary reason Anikesh. Sometimes they go public under pressure from investors to give exits to stakeholders. Another reason why a company (even one which can raise money from investors or is doing well financially) might go public is the visibility and credibility that an IPO gives - being transparent with company info and financials can result in more business from customers, and it can also be an easy path to a merger or acquisition. So it’s not always about entirely about capital. -Caleb
