I think that you're correct on most of the info relayed, except that all carbs are used as energy, even simple carbs. When your calorie intake exceeds calorie output, that's when carbs are stored as fat. Since simple carbs tend to be more calorie dense than complex carbs and because they often have little to no fiber in them, they are usually digested faster and as a result tend to be converted more readily into fat (I think). They also make people feel more hungry than if they ate complex carbs.
