It's not necessary to remove an ABS ring for a non-abs vehicle. On the other hand, an ABS vehicle requires the ring so are sometimes replaced if broken (if you can find one).
This was a while ago so you may be right, but I seem to recall that something on the front strut would interfere with the abs ring, which is why we removed it.

Is Abs ring the only difference between the abs/non abs hub? Could you just fit a ring on a hub to retrofit abs
There are other things you'd need to swap on, but as for the hub, yes the only difference is the abs pulse ring.
