    Replacing the poppet valve on a 250HP Yamaha HPDI 2003. Pretty straight forward, definitely a DIY project on a weekend for the average person. It will require additional help, an extra set of hands to install the new part. but with patience this can be done in about 45-1hr.

    Yeah sorry it was a hard question to explain via text
    My particular motor doesn’t have the mushroom cap
    My plastic valve looks like a “plus shape“
    (+) At both ends and about 1.25” -1.50” long
    And near the center is the round plastic about the size of a quarter that seats against the rubber seal inside engine
    And thank you, 👍 you were right the short end of the valve seats toward engine and long end sits inside the spring
    I’m the one guy that has stuff that no one else has lol
    The 1990 model Yamaha ETLD is virtually unheard of when I search and marina’s always have to call me back for parts lol

    • @ReelTeaseFishing
      @ReelTeaseFishing  8 месяцев назад

      I don't recall 100% but I believe it has 4 anodes and all of them are only accessible when the water jacket is removed.
      if you have never removed them, keep in mind that the bolts are 20+ years old and have a high chance of snapping.
      If you are removing them, I would spray them for a few days with penetrating oil, and tap them a few times to loosen any rust and give you the best shot at removing them.

      the dome/mushroom will face the engine block. it forms a seal against the rubber grommet. The stem or the cross/+ side goes into the spring to hold in place

      That rubber grommet has a spot we’re it sits. If you look at the grommet it has a groove. That lets it sit in its position

      I just removed mine from my 2004 Yamaha 90. I found the shorter end of the valve inside the motor, and the longer end sittimg inside the spring. That doesn't seem right to me tho, because the plus sign on the shorter side gets kimda stuck inside the rubber grommet in the motor, and it's really hard to move. Can anyone confirm?

    Hello i bought brand new Yamaha F100FETL 2020, i have problem with hot water going out from tell-tale hole. I changed thermostat and the temperature went lower a little bit. I've checked the impeller and it's fine ("outboard pees normally") In my yamaha gauge the pressure level is on 1st level of total six. The temperature level is on 4th of total six and not going down or up. It very strange to me without adding throttle, on iddle position at 800 RPM to get 4th level of total six for temperature. The dealer says to me everything is fine which i don't think so. Some advice if it's possible how to solve the issue. Thanks in advance

      @ReelTeaseFishing  3 года назад

      Best thing for a new engine is take it in under warranty. Id do that before messing with anything. It is not rare to have the impeller put in backwards (fins on impeller put in the wrong directions) Happens quite a bit actually. Secondly the key (small half moon) usually put in with the impeller to lock it in place will sometimes slip out, or not be installed by mistake. Lastly Checking the poppet valve for any debris that may be leaving it slightly open.
      Does it only get high heat in neutral or low rpms?

      @@ReelTeaseFishing when i turn engine the level of temperature is on 2nd line on my gauge after 5 minutes quickly getting to 3rd and 4th and it stays like that , no up or down(i don't need to add throttle, just iddle at 800 RPM). The engine is driven in fresh water not salty. This happened during the first initial start after it was connected on the pontoon. The engine now is at dealer which is very dumb saying the engine is working very well. The thermostat and impeler check where made by other man with permission of dealer because i leave in other city. The dealer was asking the man with who i do all the services for my engines in my city how to fix it, so based on that you can imagine how smart is to fix it. Very strange also he connected on a diagnostic tool (dealer) and it says no error but the thing is the engine have only 180 hours and also while i was waiting the new thermostat i was driving without thermostat (the water from tell-tale was on 2nd level all the time while driving but like that the engine doesn't get the right working temperature.)and also i didn't drive above 3400 RPM, i didn't do WOT for example. I measured all Yamaha's, Honda, Mercury from other pontoons and in iddle position all of them are showing temperature between 28° to 32° degrees not like mine 42°, 45° or above. When my colleague do WOT (he have the same gauge with the same levels for temperatures same power horse 100 just is 3-4 years older) it shows 3rd level for temperature sometimes it goes to 4th but after some time again it falls to 3rd(when iddle he is on 2nd not like me on 4th level), in my case i don't need to add throttle because it quickly get to 4th and stays like that.

    What does the poppet valve do

    • @ReelTeaseFishing
      @ReelTeaseFishing  Год назад +1

      Poppet valve is a pressure relief valve for the cooling system. At idle it is shut so that pressure can build up and allow water to reach all parts of the engine. At high RPMs the water pressure builds and this is when the poppet opens to relieve and dump excess water.

    What is a poppet valve do?

    • @ReelTeaseFishing
      @ReelTeaseFishing  Год назад +2

      the poppet valve is made to allow enough water pressure to reach the top of the cylinders at idle or low speeds when it is working correctly. Basically it is closed at low pressures to allow water to make it to all parts of the engine, at higher RPMs/speeds the poppet opens. (Pops open hence poppet) so that the heads won’t have a huge increase in water pressure. Look at it as a relief valve. A leak in the poppet valve will cause the engine to over heat at idle or low RPMs because now it can’t cool the whole engine because of lack in pressure.
      Kind of how we put our thumb when there’s low pressure in our garden hose to give it more reach, same concept

    • @ReelTeaseFishing
      @ReelTeaseFishing  4 года назад +2

      the poppet valve is part of the cooling system. Its a water regulating system. think about it like this. at low RPM's, or in idle there isn't as much pressure in the cooling system so the poppet valve stays shut. (Garden hose with thumb on the end to increase pressure/distance.) When the outboard is at higher RPM's the impeller is in higher RPM's too, this increases pressure & begins to open the poppet valve. Once enough water is going through the system to keep the engine at proper temp, the poppet valve opens completely. (Thumb off garden hose). Once the poppet valve is completely open it dumps any excess water out of the cooling system as to not over pressures the cooling system. (bypass)

    • @ReelTeaseFishing
      @ReelTeaseFishing  4 года назад +3

      since this is one of the first areas that water from your impeller reaches, it is crucial to keep it clean. & usually if the t stats and impeller have been replaced and low pressure or overheating is still occurring, the poppet valve could be your culprit. it is not rare to open it and see seaweed, compacted mud or sand, debris, plastic bag material stuck in the poppet. at low idle and a stuck poppet valve in the open position, you could see how it doesn't allow for enough water to cool the engine.

    pop it valves are a bull shit design this is the disaster failures that cause customers to not want outboards there shouldnt be anything that expensive that is that high of maintenance the little rubber impeller that is a joke & such a hassle to replace ..this design has been with outboards for 75 years still no great improvements just more parts to fail were added .. really think about it its a combustion motor hey it needs to be cooled.. hello there water all around it constantly & they design this flimsy ass little rubber impeller that will warp burn & ware so easy its a shame.. there to many other water impellers that would almost never need to be serviced just sayin outboards are always overheating look what they cost a good used outboard around 200hp is starting cost 8k
