Great video, I'm currently transplanting the 5 speed motor into an old Honda ct90 frame. Just sorting the electrics at the moment. Hoping I can get most of the unnecessary items removed without EML being on.

The oil pump does not need to be cleaned in either model, the difference is that the 4 gear model has a centrifugal oil filter and the 5 gear model has a better paper filter that you need to replace
I just bought a 2024 Monkey, hope Honda resolved the 2nd gear issue. I’ll certainly stick with the thin viscosity 10w30 that Honda recommends for these motors. Great video 🙏 In the early 70’s I was tearing those motors apart all the time. They use to be indestructible, fingers crossed they still are. Thanks from 🇨🇦
I just bought the 2023 Monkey in June and really like the 5 speed and the cartridge filter. Pulling the side cover off the clean out the oil trap has got t be a pain. I did read that the 2022 had a bad batch causing the over heating problem of the bushing and that is just your opinion only.
Bad ass informative video sir! Thank you! I would honestly watch hour long videos of you just installing big bores and putting together these wonderful little bikes. Off topic question, I'm thinking of getting a 2023 Royal Enfield Interceptor. Do you have any opinion on them? I think they look like giant Monkeys. Thanks!
I call mark1(4-speed)&mark2(5-speed) (Mark1)can put bigger cylinder sleeve to bore up . because crankcase hole diameter has a 67.1mm (Mark2) Can bore up at 53mm only Because crankcase is tiny
As said, very good and informative video, but 2 questions if I may, has honda rectified that 2nd gear bush tightness problem and with the 22 motor having narrower engine mounts did they use spacers to make up the difference from the I'll motor gap or were the engine mounts themselves narrower thus no needing a spacer. Thank you. 👍

I’m new to this platform and I’m looking at getting a 2024 monkey. Are there any reliability mods that should be done to this motor, oil catch can, crank case vent etc?
Thanks a lot for the video. I am not sure I understand your conclusion though. Are you saying that the five gear shift motor is generally a better quality build But that the four Gear 125 Honda monkey is faster than the fifth? I am hesitating between these two. I used to have the 125 for shift motor Honda monkey and I loved it. But now I'm thinking of getting the five shift for longer distances. What do you think ? Thanks in advance. Hugs from France.

My 2023 Monkey has trouble upshifting. Takes multiple attempts on each shift. Has done it since new. It's like trying to go from 5th to another gear but only a 5 speed. Could this be the 2nd gear bushing issue you talked about? Thanks.
Mine did the same thing.. took it to the dealership under warranty. They installed a return shift spring from an older gen .. no I have a god awful noise when releasing the clutch slowly as soon as it hits the friction zone .. I call a lemon
@@oscarbear7498that doesn't make sense? Fifth gear gives you more acceleration with the same power and less consumption, where do you get those absurd ideas like less is better than more?
@@totalglitch- Hi from Big Rodders in Ireland. I've done some research on the gearing of both engines. The two top gears in both engines produce virtually the same speed at max power revs. The 5th gear model has a lower 1st gear so is better for mountain trails while I prefer the taller 1st gear of the 4 speed for road use.

Correct and correct
Thank You very much for the Tipps! Now, i will by a 5 Gear Monkey♥️👍🏼

So I go for the old one this bike is a keeper for sure so why not to advance thanks for the clarification

very good... exactly what i needed to know as i have a 2021 ct125 already and was planning on buying a 2023 model for my holiday house.

The bad transmissions are random. Really random but we get them here still once a month.
EXCELLENT video - GROMs are awesome!

Nice video! I’ve been thinking about buying a monkey, this is good information. I’m thinking about brand new, 2025, any insight on the new ones yet?

You should really be live streaming this. So many would benefit from your knowledge.
Good stuff right there. Thanks Wayne.
Had a 2017 Grom….. have a 2023 CT125 and now I’m debating on getting a monkey 😂
Good stuff, thanks for the video bud :)
So which is better, the 4 speed? Sorry im not good with technical terms
So if you have a big bore motor it is better to get rid on the oil spinner and go with the kitaco engine cover? Awsome video
I would say 160cc and bigger definitely
Thanks

Yes they have a new bushing for 2nd gear. To use the old engine you’ll need the cases milled and spacers.
@@illbuell ,, that's great news about the 2nd gear, I'll put the 2023 back on my shopping list. Thanks again 🙂 🤜🤛

This was very interesting
So with the bushing issue on the 22 would running full synthetic oil help with the over heating the bushing
It helps

All I’m saying if you keep it stock, go with the five speed. If you’re going to modify it, go with the four-speed.
That’s exactly what I got from video. 👍
which modification a are you sujestimg?
4 Gear box easy modified , easy space engine

Is it correct that there is no oil channel on the exhaust valve?

By chance can you verify the 2nd gear bushing part number for us, old vs new numbers.
Maybe a dumb question, but what are these used for? A dirt bike perhaps?
Honda Grom or monkey 125cc.

Es gibt keinen Schleuder, um nur das Sieb an der Unterseite des Motors zu reinigen. Was selten gewartet werden muss.

Looks like the 4 speed is more reliable and powerful, the head in the 22 is so tiny lol
There's no point to a 5th gear on 125cc. It's the same power, just better selling point of a 5th gear.
But it gives you a lower rpm so it's less heat and wear correct?
