  • This is how you paint when you see rain clouds coming!! I was just working on this exterior and got some extended footage that a sped up into 1 minute's worth of video.
    I'm using a Graco Ultra Max II 695, airless sprayer to shoot this exterior. Using a 517 tip, a 10" and 20" gun extension and Miller Paint.
    Be safe while working on renovation and painting projects. Use all equipment correctly, and use the required PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) like respirators, gloves, boots, hard hats, eye protection where applicable.

      Brian Mowers That ladder is a 36'. The ground is sloped away from the house and is wet dirt, making a potential for ladder slipage. Had to use "leg levelers", and pay close attention to ladder (feet) placement and I pushed a stake in front of the feet a couple times for more security.

      @XCPainter  2 месяца назад +1

      Thanks. I used a 517 tip that day, which is about the largest size anyone would use... due to the large walls and nothing around to overspray. 517 puts out a good amount of paint so you have to be good with spraying to avoid piling it up or leaving spray pattern marks.
      A 515 is about the perfect size to spray many exteriors, hardiplank, lap siding, and a smaller size can be utilized as well.

      Hi there, sorry for rhe late response. For cleaning, you can use a eco friendly house cleaner, like Ben Moore "Clean " or krud kutter "House Cleaner". A soft scrub brush and pressure wash everywhere after soaping it up.
      Check out a local paint store for masonry primer for the bottom section of house, and you can use a similar paint or regular acrylic paint.

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  7 месяцев назад +2

      There are a few reasons why you can't successfully spray in a tall column pattern... I was spraying out the soffits up top, along with the top section that requires certain ladder sets. Also there's different ladder spacing from the wall requiring an extension wand on the lower sections.
      3rd reason is that the drying paint would create tall skinny sections where the overlaps would flash very badly.

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  Год назад +3

      The ground sloped slightly dowhill away from the house, which can be quite dangerous with the foot slippage. So on this one, I pounded a stake (or my 5 in 1) into the ground in front of the ladder to hold it. Also, making sure the feet are dug into the ground a little.
      The method I used on these ladder positions, was so the ladder never got in the way of my spray pattern.
      Was great for spec homes, but have to treat custom homes with more caution as to not damage roof tabs or gutters up top.

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  2 года назад

      That's really good time for a repaint or any full project. This one took me 6 days and it was new construction, so faster production since I did a smaller amount of prep, primer.
      I would take 2-3 weeks on a good sized repaint myself.

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  Год назад

      @Street Performance Bikes you're right there's a lot involved and a lot that can o sideways from what is planned.
      When the wood goes with the paint, that is called wood failure usually dye to UV rays going through the original coating for years, it destroys the lignin (glues wood cells together) and the wood falls apart on a cellular level.
      I'm doing a Victorian style home now. It's like restoration of sorts instead of just a repaint. Lots of sanding to raw wood like you did.
      094 Fresh Start oil primer is great stuff.

    Hi buddy, i haven’t sprayed the out side of a house before , is the lap joins visible ? do you back roll last coat,

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  6 лет назад +4

      Artie6937 hi there yeah your lap marks from section to section can show if you don't feather it out or if you were to make a harsh stop and it made a line, or if you just put too much on the overlap. I try to do my overlap a tiny bit lighter than what's right in front of me and I try to hit everything twice. Now this is talking about Hardiplank siding in particular. As for back rolling if you're working with a rough wood or a porous surface it helps greatly to backroll and it makes the entire surface even and it's going to give the paint adhesion. Hardiplank siding does not need to be back rolled in my opinion if you can spray evenly

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  6 лет назад +2

      Artie6937 also if you are back rolling, it's important to backroll the first coat and sometimes the second coat. Sometimes you can skip back rolling on the second coat as long as you can spray it very evenly

    I'm doing an exterior with some pretty sloped ground. Are leg levelers easy and safe to use? Also I've never sprayed an exterior before but it's so fast. A lot of pros do it but what happens to the mist and overspray when you end your pass off the substrate and goes in the air does it dry up and turn to dust?

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  4 года назад +2

      Hi there! Leg levelers are an excellent addition to extension ladders and very crucial in fact. There are different brands and thus they have differences in how they function. There are manually adjustable models and there are automatic adjust models... Both work great and there are pros and cons with both. I like the auto adjust by Werner because they are quick, easy, and have the same type of aluminum feet that their ladders have. They grip the ground very well.
      Some of the manually adjustable versions have circle shaped feet that has a rubber footprint... those are okay on some surfaces, but not great at gripping loose dirt or grass sometimes.
      As far as spray work goes... it does take practice to spray well and even, and avoid issues. Mentoring from someone or training GREATLY helps.
      Overspray from acrylic paints will travel in the air so you have to minimize or cut out "Blow-by" or overspray at the corners and while spraying soffits. Have to avoid shooting paint into the air. Cars should be moved away and all ground and objects should be covered with drop cloths.

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  4 года назад

      @@genosciacca1816 painting cedar is very doable. Is the cedar texture really rough or smooth already? Ladder stabilizer up top can help, though I rarely use them unless I specifically need to be held away from the building

    • @genosciacca1816
      @genosciacca1816 4 года назад +1

      @@XCPainter It's fairly smooth already. I know you're a high end painter because I've seen your videos so I appreciate the info. After watching you knock that house out I'm like forget the brush and roll. I'll be using a flat paint and the customer wants a cheaper paint since it's just a sell. He wants to go the box store route which I'm not too familiar with their products like I am with Ben and Sherwin. Their prices are cheaper than the a100 from SW I like so I don't know what product I'll be working with. I saw some commercial painters spraying cinder blocks yesterday and I didn't see any mist floating around however I'll be using a Titan 400 on a skid with a 515 lp tip and they had a much nicer larger rig if that matters. The ladders levelers also by Werner look good I hope they work or I'll be dead.

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  4 года назад

      I used to spray oil based exteriors... you had to be trained to spray very very particularly.
      Also keep in mind there is no perfect.... I can always do my best, using the resources at hand and within the parameters of the job scope.
      Yes, ramblers are more feasible to spray sections out without visible issues.
      Houses on hill sides, large sides, tall, etc... challenging to say the least.

    Does not show the effort in prep work to be able to just spray with airless!

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  3 года назад

      Correct, the prep work is masking windows, moving ladders, setting up sprayer, straining paint, dusting siding off, getting my respirator and gear on, etc, etc.
      There are pine soffits up front that get a quick 180 grit sand with the sander and whitewashed, there's accent color gables in front that get masked and sprayed a second color...
      I have no reason to show all that in this video.

      Definitely can be or is dangerous when something goes wrong.
      Have the ladder set up on solid ground and level. Ladders "Dogs" locked and ladder in good condition.
      I had a friend who passed away after falling from a 6ft ladder a few years back.. brain swelled up and was on life support until the next day.
