Awesome video GTL! I just did one on the same subject. Had a couple people tell me I took too much but pruned very similar to you. I think the tree will be fine and much better off long term. If I get a bunch of sprouts I’ll thin them next year again! Thanks for the video
What is so cool is to see is a 70 year old apple tree properly pruned over years! Also, might want to state that other fruit trees like cherry and peach trees are pruned/structured differently. Thanks for illustrative video! Pat from NW oregon.

you left very large stumps, they won't overgrow. you have to cut closer to the main trunk of the tree

Hello 👋, Thank you for your comment 😊 my main goal is to encourage someone to go and take action and be comfortable and learn as you do it.
It's like a haircut it grows back, just try not to cut more then 30 percent of the overall tree. Leave room for sunlight, airflow and learn where your fruiting wood is so you can manage the right amount of it.
ill just pile onto the 'complaint fest': that tree has alot of algea/moss growth indicating pisspoor airflow/UV penetration. you may want to examine the surrounding trees and brush for overgrowth in addition to the apple tree you just pruned
Also I have that same Fiskars pruner.. it is AWESOME. I abuse mine and it hasn't broke yet, have had it a few yrs now. .spray it with PB blaster or WD40.

An old neglected tree requires two winters of severe pruning. Then it is looking good in the spring of the third year.
I love your videos. I have a problem apple tree. It is about 25 feet tall and has grown straight up with a single narrow trunk. I would to get it down to a proper harvesting height of 12 feet. CAn I just cap it off?

Woodpeckers go after insects that actually ARE damaging the tree. They are not responsible for damaging the tree, but helping save it.
Hi James, I thought the same way that you do, until I started planting trees and observing. They also like the sweet sap that flows out. I planted 50 white himalayan birch trees and I'm watching them slowly getting destroyed by the woodpeckers. They nearly remove all the bark in a circle around the trunk and fly in every 10 min to lick the sap. It's painful to watch. They are not just after insects. They killed some of my apple trees, willows, and birches, but every tree has alot of damage from them and that in itself will attract insects, fungal, bacterial and viral infections.
I would keep goat with apples trees they will eat everything they can jump on the main truck and clear all buds leaves and fruits in one sitting

thanks for the video, I watched carefully but still don't understand exactly how you decide what to take off and what to leave when there is so much growth and all the large branches are not in the good places,
well, just remove what's dead and what's blocking light or air movement from the center of the tree, try not to remove more then a third of the tree. i hope this helps
In my opinion the cuts should be parted over 3 years. On the other hand the cutting should be done a month earlier.

Hello Riza. Yes and no. The reason you shouldn't remove more than one third of the tree in one growing season is so that it doesn't start to grow alot of vertical shoots in an attempt to recover itself. The roots are sized to the tree size above ground, so it's going to try to balance itself. You're just gonna have to deal with alot of new growth. As far as the timing, it's a matter of opinion I suppose. I prune year round in my orchard.
@@growtolearn4545 Hello GtL thanks for your detailed answer. Yes, the approach is different. If the result is right and the tree does not get sick or die, everything is ok. I would not cut trees in the months of October to January, so as not to get diseases into the tree through moisture. Many greetings from Germany and if you want to see my solution to the dandelion, gladly (only 2 min without advertising). 🙂

How do u keep the large limbs ( looks like 4 inches) from rotting? do u a use wound dressing? Thanks
i sometimes use some latex paint and make a cut at a slope to keep the moisture off.
Will u still get apples after cutting so much off? They should be bigger right? Do you spray it?
Oh yes, as long as you're not cutting out the fruiting spurs, most of them are on the horizontal branches. Fruiting spurs start to develop on second third and older wood and keep producing flowers and fruits for about 11 to twelve years on the same spur.. it's a short little branch, it only grows about a 1/4 in per year. There are also tip fruiting varieties, that bear fruit on the tip of last year's branch, but those are not as common. When you prune, leave all the spurs, unless they need to be removed

Hello, thank you for asking. That is something you watch and see what the tree will do. If it puts on a lot of short ones, you can thin them out, especially if its crowding up the middle, if they are on the outer part of the tree, you could trim them to 4 to 6 buds and see if you can get some side growth from them, then when you do your hard pruning you can leave what you like. the very vigorous ones i cut our right away. Also keep that center open for light and air movement. Hope this helps.
Thank you. My in-laws have an older tree that was topped 15-20 years ago and left alone. The water spouts formed uprights that are now 6-8” in diameter and 20-30’ tall. They have a lot of downward pressure on those main limbs. I’ve taken out half of them but, have 5-6 more to take off. I’m debating whether to do them this year or wait until next March? We’re at green tip now. It’s on old Duchess Oldenburg from the 1860s.
When did you start cutting on this tree? Normally you don't want to remove more then 30% of the total tree size per season. Also 6 to 8 inch limbs most likely won't grow over and might cause wood rotting on the inside. you could help to grow new bark over it by grafting around the perimeter of the cut and when the branches grow, they will close up towards the center. ones it grows in, then you cut off all the grafts and let them heal over.
I took a couple last year and 4-5 more this year. Those were the smaller 2-4” ones. I was thinking the same thing next year. Cut those off and bark graft in several scions to help close up the wounds. I don’t have enough dormant scions to do it this year but maybe I could cut them at 2-3’ above the main limbs and take the weight off. I’ll need to talk to my father in-law to allow me to do this.
@@nhmountains5683 yes, you are thinking correctly, try to maybe find some growth on it at the lowest point possible and cut it to that. Seal up the cut with at least some latex paint and that will stop it from dieing back for a little while. Then when you are ready to graft, you can trim it lower and get that done.

Yes, more then 25% the rule is keep it under 30 so that the tree doesn't go in to vigorous survival mode and start to push a bunch of suckers which is not going to kill the tree but make more work for you to manage it.
