MY IDEA OF A SUCCULENT GARDEN | VLOG #50 Succulents & Coffee w/ Liz

  • Comparing 5 months growth on some of my displayed snow queen Echeverias. A mini tour of my front garden to get an idea of the scope of work that needs to be done. A combination of Australian garden, Cottage garden, Cactus and succulent garden all mix into one. Tall trees and shrubs provides height, Colours and textures, quirky ornaments and repurposing otherwise wasted materials sums up my idea of a succulent garden. Not to mention....minimal work.

Hi Liz, if I were a poet I would write a poem about your garden and you. Your garden reflects you. As a viewer, I’ve come to know the kind of person you are. No one probably would think that perennials could go with succulents or cacti. But in your garden they do . They look happy and vigorous. Your garden is so diverse . It’s an ecosystem in itself, with the presence of bees ( pollinators) , wild birds and probably small lizards and other small insects lurking underneath those plants! Secondly, your garden is an “ organized chaos”. ( I don’t know the origin of this phrase, I’m borrowing it.). Just like nature, it’s never organized, unlike the well trimmed, symmetrical garden designs of Europe palaces and castles. You wouldn’t dare step on them, you might ruin the designs, man made designs. Your garden, just like you is natural. Let nature takes it’s course. Stick them into the ground and let them thrive on their own. In fact, leave them alone and they perfectly show life, vigor and beauty. Underneath those dried, decomposing leaves are new growth, new life that surprise you every time you go around your garden sipping coffee. For me, it’s exciting, exhilarating, giving renewed vigor and hope to start my day. Your garden is a reflection of real life, like the gazania among a carpet of succulents, and alone in the pebble covered ground while the rest of them clustered not too far, randomly placed. You didn’t put it there on purpose, did you?and lastly, you accentuate your garden with those towering stones that look like chunks of granite, and earlier in the video, a crystal like stone( might be a precious stone) that add up to the beauty of your garden, not to mention the dried/ dead trunk of a tree. Your garden is a reflection of you, diverse, , real and unpretentious. Have a wonderful day, Liz.

Thank you so much Necy for this wonderful comment. I really appreciate it and you have given me soooo much ideas for future videos... So THANK YOU!!! yes the gazania is self seeded from my main garden bed. The dead trunk of trees are actually 400 million years old Petrified wood. Thank you once again and Have a Great Day!

Liz, you should think about getting ring camera or motion capture camera that works through wifi that is meant for the garden or front yard that can sit on a garden fixture or post. There are certain cameras made for outdoors that will send you notifications when people get within a designated area you select for motion to catch and immediately notify you.

Liz - Congratulations on your 50th vlog!! woo woo. You talked about your lobster in the bin, what we do is freeze the scraps until bin night and then put them out - so they don't stink so badly. I'm not sure if you do this but to try to stop people stealing you could plant spikey cactus etc in between the others so that it's more difficult for them to steal? Just a thought. Maybe you already do that.. Some people are just not nice and they will do anything which is sad. And I Love your gardens so I think those that don't like it have no taste ;) I love gazanias, they remind me of Indian chief feathers - well that's what I have thought of since I was a kid. :)

We had a garbage collection strike when I filmed this. They did not collect the garbage that week but great idea on the freezing of stinky matters. I will definitely take that on board. Thank you! The cactus idea is really bad...LOL I had a run in with my opuntia. Got some stuck on the sleeves of my shirt and I ended up covered with those tiny thorns. Spent a week digging them out of me...Bwahaha.....I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Thief or not.

I hope someday she realizes that the joy of life is experiencing the pleasure of “doing” what makes you happy, and embracing the present moments just as they are, and not in having everything look/be perfect.

I always admire to have this kind of garden here in the Philippines.. Unfortunately I started during wet season so my Echeverias are only out during sunny days, and my Hardy stoncrops are out with rain and sun 24/7.
