    Well, someone who was familiar with Tolkien's Legendarium would definitely not say Gandalf is the same as Dumbledore, however I agree they serve a similar narrative function, at least in LOTR.

    The best movies/books are based on The Odyssey. Hero archetype trying to get home must overcome endless obstacles, overcoming a dark night of the soul, while Penelope waits patiently at home. It's a metaphor for our own lives. We're stuck here on Earth trying to get home to God only to be faced with endless obstacles. Script editors in Hollywood can tell producers how much money they will make on a movie based on how close the script matches The Odyssey. So, we see the same story over and over and over and over...

      Well said Agrx. I've always thought it was the same but more primate.
      Boy meets girl. Girl (or family or power structure) finds boy inadequate. Boy goes and kills a shitload of opponents to that family/power structure/ ideology/whatever and the boy gets girl, fucks, and spawns.
      Boy meets girl. Girl....etc., etc.,
      It's got nothing to with God or Allah or any other fantastical inventions. It's all about primates.

      Well I find that interesting. I find that hollywood does rehash shit all the time, so perhaps they’re being reaffirmed to stick with the same story rather than finding a fresh alternative. I also find it interesting that the dude who first responded to you essentially said that the Hero’s Journey is without god and is primal. You dumb shits the Hero’s Journey is clearly with god and without god. You can clearly see that in the fact that you are both using the form of the Hero’s Journey to get your point across. There is little description of the Hero’s Journey beyond the form that you use to implement it. It has infinite potential realizations (as it is a form of metaphor that has guided culture for most of human history). That’s why you hear JBP saying the same stuff in different metaphors (“Hero slays dragon, Beauty tames beast, Human learns from God, etc etc), it’s all a crack at saying the same thing.

      Gandalf had a rivalry with the wizard Saruman before he fell to corruption.
      Dumbledore had a romance/rivalry with the wizard Grindelwald before he fell to corruption.
      Both of these dark wizards initially set out on the path to create a revolutionary new order for the greater good by studying the dark arts, but were consumed by it. Both of their benevolent counterparts successfully integrated their shadows where the other could not!
      Maybe Dumbledore had a tougher time of it, having to overcome the dark side of his own sexuality as well...

    i heard romance (wooing, gentlemanly conduct towards a woman) is only about 1,200 years old. i heard somewhere that the medieval knights created the idea of romance in western culture. before that sex was sex and marriage was for the stability of the community. still love must be as old as people -- caring for children is a selfless act. maybe, i'll think on it.

    I dont understand why the need to create this whole "archetype" thing. These are basic things to us as people so they resonate with us. What's the point of saying that they're archetypes? To understand how to make good stories? We all like sex and winning etc etc, we all know that. Does anyone understand what I'm saying who knows what he's talking about too?

    • @jeffappleton926
      @jeffappleton926 6 лет назад +12

      It's not about creating an archetype thing. It's about identifying and naming the "basic things that resonate with us" with a view to better understanding them. With this knowledge we are better able to examine, challenge or support them in stories at a deeper and more interesting level.
