Jaylen Brown won because he was the most consistent and most efficient. He was the clutch guy in crucial moments. You could argue in part that besides Brown's own raw talent, he was able to score more efficiently because of Tatum's playmaking skills, in which he was able to read the defense well, draw the defenders away, making the correct plays which left Brown open for clearer/open shots. Defensively, they were both good, but Brown went the extra mile in being able to actually guard Luka and forcing many turnovers. Tatum still dominated the stats, despite taking the playmaker role and allowing his team mates to shine. He still played his role and was an integral part to the team's success. Anyone claiming Tatum was bad is just hating. In saying this, I think Brown deserved it, but if Tatum had won it instead, I'd be completely okay with it. Love both Jays.

In the clip of Brown talking that you posted, he stated that his goal was to deny Luka the ball. You can't just look at Luka's shot attempts as a measure of Brown's defense. A large part of what Brown did well was denying Luka the ball and putting enough pressure on him at half court to make him pass to a teammate who then took a bad shot. I think your analysis of his defense is too narrow in scope.
Additionally, Brown was more consistent than Tatum and had memorable shots to help close out games and secure wins.
Not saying that Tatum didn't also deserve consideration for MVP, but chalking it up to just the voters being dumb is very poor analysis imo.

I don't think I've heard a single person say it should be Tatum. No, Brown didn't win just because defense but because he always showed up. We all watched and there was a clear separation between the two. There is a case for Jrue over Tatum as the runner up too. This just sounds like someone looking at the stat sheet and picking the highest numbers. If it was that simple we wouldn't need voting

These are the type of comments I see everywhere. I truly don’t think we watch games the same way. Somehow people that agree with you see Brown playing well in “high pressure” moments and then make statements like “he showed up when it matters” so my question is does the rest of the game not matter? Does the fact that when Tatum would be on the bench the Mavericks would go on runs to make it a close game not matter? Tatum is the reason Brown could even be in those moments. Tatum was the offense and brown did his job by capping it off. Tatum didn’t have an efficient shooting finals but damn he was phenomenal in every other category.

Tatum assisted on 33% of Brown's assisted field goals this finals, the highest percentage of any duo ever. Tatum was a willing passer and facilitator, he ran the offense and took on the less 'sexy' assignment of guarding the Mavs centres and taking away the lob threat that killed every other team. It was clear how the defense was set up to neutralize Tatum and he took it in stride, the dude played exceptional unselfish basketball. I'm not saying Brown didn't deserve the award.
But I hate the narrative that Brown is and has been consistently better than Tatum, especially in big games. Tatum was much better in 2023 and 2022 postseasons (except the Finals series) and even this series Brown had 3 good games and 2 bad games (had more points in game 4 but wasn't the better player). I would actually say Tatum was the more consistent player, tho JB had higher highs, but also lower lows. Tatum is the best player on the team. He's been in contention for MVP for the last 3 seasons with 5 consecutive all-star appearances. While Tatum did "choke" he led the team in points, rebounds, and assists. That being said Celtics proved that the model of any championship team is having a good team, not just a duo or big three. BUT That being said - The FMVP deservedly went to Brown but it could have gone to others like Jrue or Porzingis (if he didn't get injured) But more so than that Brown was the first key piece in Boston that along with Horford that has been here the longest and created the culture for this team to win. Brown showed leadership for the Celtics and defended the best player on the Mavericks team (Luka Doncic). The Celtics as a team are exceptional so who gets the awards doesn't take away from the team's amazing success or how good Tatum is.

It wasnt because Brown was racking up plays with counting stats; it was because he took him on all the way up the floor over and over, wore him out, and he didnt have legs to close games. No one can guard Luka and stop him. But Jaylen outworked him and wore him out. Then Jaylen hit late game-closing shots and was very effective late in games whej Luka disappeared. Jaylens physicality set the tone for Boston on both ends of the floor, and the timeliness of his baskets was a huge factor. Jaylen deserved the MVP.

Look at fg%, 3p%. Tatum basically had 2 good games out of 5 where he scored a lot (on mediocre efficiency) which bumps up his average for the series. Jaylen Brown had 4 good games out of 5 and spent a lot of time guarding the most offensively productive player in the league. Honestly I don't think either of them was clearly better than the other, and I think Jrue Holiday also had some really good games (he had a terrible game in game 4, but so did the whole team more or less), and Porzingis in game 1 was crazy good and pretty good in game 2 as well. Ultimately the Celtics had a lot of very good players but no single player who was far and away the best. Tough to decide who to give the award in a case like that. I also wonder if Jaylen Brown not making an All-NBA team while Tatum was First Team influenced who they gave the award to. Ultimately it seems fair to me, I don't think Tatum was robbed. I don't think Brown was obviously better or anything but I think he deserved it.

Brown won because he did more than he was expected to, and Tatum did less. Anyone watching the Celtics from the time these two played together knows that Tatum has the more polished game. Still, Tatum, as gifted as he is, gives even his most ardent fans headaches because he isn't making the most of his talents. I even posit that Brown is the emotional leader of the team, while Tatum performs better when he doesn't take the brunt of leadership. I'm not upset that Brown won, as a fan, because he didn't shrink from the pressure, although I think Tatum should have won because of things he did that actually didn't show up in the stat sheet. That includes taking away the lob threat and keeping the offense running. This isn't as bad as Iguodala winning Finals MVP.

JT had better +/- than JB in every game but game 4. Not slightly better, Tatum had +19 and Brown had +3. That means Tatum elevated Celtics game, just as Jrue did, who was the best player for first two games but not at the 3rd one even tho he was Cs best scorer (same with Tatum that had worse +/- when he scores more instead of facilitating). What Brown did well, he exhausted Luka, by guarding him full court. Still don't think that was the only thing that tired Luka, hunting him was the crucial factor.

To be honest, I only think that jayden brown won finals mvp because of his 304 million dollar contract. It must’ve probably been a waste not to give it to him, as $304 million is very big money

  • @godsdaughter8439
    @godsdaughter8439 4 дня назад +2

Last year Jaylen Brown was "nearly on the chopping block" the way people were trying to put him down because of how he played in Game 7 versus the Miami Heat. A LOT of people said he shouldnt be paid the max contract because they didn't trust him to be an effective running mate for Tatum to win a championship.
That game was etched into people's minds, even though outside of that single game, Brown was a more consistent player than Tatum against Miami. Brown's game 7 play affected how they talked about him in the post season.
For this year's series I just don't think people expected much out of Brown. A lot of reputable media personalities including on RUclips picked the Mavs to win because they "didn't trust" Tatum and Brown.
They expected Tatum to be the guy who would energize the team and be the leader on the court--but Brown did that, not Tatum.
There were several moments across different games when Brown made plays that affected the psyche of both the Celtics and the Mavericks. Theres a confidence--a hunger, a "we arent going down like last year" ferociousness that came from Brown that was infectious and absolutely affected the game.
Basketball isn't just about the numbers, it's about the energy on the court--especially in the finals its a mental game.
There are some things statistics cant capture. You yourself said that Luka kept trying to switch OFF of Brown. There is no statistic to capture intimidation.
To summarize Brown won finals MVP because:
    1) The man simply played incredible basketball, showed up during moments when it seemed like the Celtics were losing momentum, and improved aspects of his game (as opposed to last year) when many people were saying he'll never improve in those areas.
2)The fact that Luka kept switching off him, tells us everything we need to know about what Luka thinks of Brown's defense. Again, there's no statistic that captures intimidation.
    3) Consistency. In as much as we would love to claim that the Finals are viewed in isolation from the rest of the playoffs, it is evident that Brown was a more consistent player than Tatum throughout the entire Playoffs. There were also key plays where Brown energised or saved the team in (Game 1 buzzer beater vs Indiana!), and just from appearances seemed to showed a bit more mental fortitude--in the Finals, there were games where Tatum was clearly too much in his head and wasn't making shots (instead was an excellent playmaker).
4)This is the point that affects Finals MVP voting. Brown had more haters (from last year into this year) who disregarded him as an overpaid, "unmarketable" (Steven A Smith), sub-par running mate to Jason Tatum. He impressed his haters more than Jayson tatum impressed his.

This Boston championship draws a lot of comparisons to the 2015 warriors were the best player (Steph) doesn’t get the fmvp and the narrative that another guy (Iggy) played better defense on the star player (Lebron) was the reason for winning. Now like Steph all those years Tatum gonna get scrutinized for not winning fmvp tho he truly deserved it. The difference is Brown is an all nba caliber player still and iggy was on the decline.

Watch all 5 games start to finish then tell me who was better in defense and offense. Stats do not tell the whole picture either.
