Jasmine was using this song to scare off guys.
This song was in the first draft of the film, the one where Aladdin has a mother, has three pals Babkak, Omar and Kassim, and there are three genies. Also Jasmine has an completely different personality in the first draft.. Then Disney had something called Black Tuesday or something where the producers scrapped the original plot and reworked the whole story. The song is actually a well-written piece by the late Howard Ashman.
I love that they included this song since it was cut from the original movie!
When Walt Disney was working on Aladdin he meant for Jasmine to be all spoiled. When he died they changed the script and didn't use the song. This song was used in the musical for jasmine to turn away potential suitors.
Do you mean Howard Ashman instead of Walt?
Never before heard song did she say? I downloaded the lyrics to this back in the 1990's and later got a copy of the author singing it on a cd. It's been around a while!
I hope this Musical will be a success an come to Broadway
I wish they did the little dance routine! XD It's hilarious.
Thank You!
I met her when she was in In The Heights! :-)
AHHHH! TIA IS MY COUSIN! I'M SO PROUD!
Allysa (in the pink dress) was on Dance Wars!
They cut To Be Free for THIS?!
I do hope they include To Be Free. Best song suited for Jasmine
They cut this from the film... THANKFULLY! I'm just hoping they use this in a way it works and doesn't change Jasmine's personality any...
Kinda reminds me of "Strongest Suite" from Aida. But it's definitely going to work. And the talent is incredible, of course. I'm kinda surprised at the decisions, though. I thought for sure they'd be going with a more Middle Eastern cast, considering the setting of the story. Again, they were great, so no complaints, but still kind of interesting. Hope they don't get any backlash for that.
Where can I get the sheet music to this?!
M gusta
This is an incredibly funny and clever song (and actually describes real-life women a lot more than they would probably care to admit), but it would've been tough to work into the story in a way that didn't make audiences immediately hate Jasmine, even if they did their best to make it clear she was just putting on an act.
@Becca5002 ummm... did you watch the rest of the video? Courtney explains it
this was cut from the broadway version or at least it isnt on the soundtrack
they cut out the bit about law degrees and facials and watching her weight
SRRRY GUYS! Y'all are right. I needs to do more research b4 I judge!
arent the actors middle eastern?
OH!!!!
I was going to make a comment on how this is nothing like Jasmine, but the explanation made sense of it.. ok.. I see what they're doing..
But the song style seems to be completely different from the rest of the songs in the score..
Call me a princess, I don't care
Call me obsessed with nails and hair
Only concerned with what to wear
Shallow and so blase
Go ahead, call me "royal pain"
I'm unimpressed with your disdain
Let me repeat one sweet refrain
Princesses get their way
Other girls cook, but that's not relaxing
Princesses make reservations
Life's much too short and Lord, it's so taxing
Ruling these darn Third World nations
Some say that when I nag a whine
Nobody's voice is as shrill as mine
Daddy thinks that I sound just fine
He's in my royal sway
Other girls study, why do they bother?
I study how to grease up my father
Fathers were born to pay
And princesses get their way
Call me a princess, I don't mind
Selfish disgrace to womankind
People need hobbies - I unwind
Watching how much I weigh
Other girls work for law degrees
Some scrub the floor on hands and knees
I'd rather have a facial, please
Slather her face in clay
Soon I'll get married - what could be sweeter?
To some Salim or Abdullah
Whoever he is, the two things he'll need are
Earplugs and plenty of moola
Princesses write a check - it clears
That's 'cause they spend those wonder years
Running to Dad and faking tears
Training him to obey
Fresh outta cash? No problem, I drop a
Snit and go running straight to my papa
Then everything's okay
Princesses get their way
Believe it
Princesses get their way
um it would be great if she was dressed in her costume...
Thank goodness that song didn't get into the Aladdin movie
I love aladdin but I don't like this side of Jasmine
If you listened to her explanation of the song you would know that this is all an act that Jasmine puts on in order to scare away her suitors.
This song was first written early in development when Jasmine was a snobby, spoiled princess, but here they did something clever to make fit into the Broadway musical because they wanted to include deleted songs. I wish they would have fit "You Can Count On Me" in there.
It was a deleted song from movie. Jasmine sings it to scare off princes
That's not the reason at all that the song was cut from the original movie. I hope this explanation works for the musical, but I am not so sure about it. It's not even that good of a song. I would rather they use "To Be Free" or a new song altogether.
UMMMM, Jasmine is not like this? WTF?
not impressed at all ...Jasmine is so much more!
Shes plotting to use this to scare the prince's away
I hope they replace this song. This sound awful.
Terrible song!
I don't like this
I hope they replace this song. This sound awful.
